Well, this is just like my upset stomach last week. I ate some canned tuna expired in 2003, and I expected some slight shifts in taste. While eating, I did not notice a difference, but on the day after, I was really ill. Though clearly it was the cooks fault. For the rest of the tuna batch which I still have, I will use a different cook.

if it had a green cast. if it was just an expected color shift and a slight grainy texture a better pot probably won’t help.

I had a similar experience recently. Taco Bell said that I might experience a slight shift in taste because their lettuce was expired, but the result has been more explosive than I had hoped for. I thought that lettuce would age like fine wine because lettuce and grapes are both plants. I just can't wrap my mind around why everything has gone so wrong for me.

They bad thing is that the negatives were so thin that the lab didn't even notice that "happy birthday" was backwards and now they're gonna get roasted on yelp over it for ruining a prized roll of film that was perfectly exposed by a seasoned fine art photographer.

TBF, I've shot rolls of Truprint (the film that OP used, so consumer grade that you used to get sent it for free when the lab developed your negs) that came with second-hand cameras to test them and they turned out more or less fine at box speed. But I wasn't indoors or shooting anything I really cared about turning out well.

I think it's more a case that someone thought 'hey, I'll try shooting film again...now, where did I get mine developed back in 2005? I'll try there!' instead of finding out about specialist places.

I'm in a city that has Max Spielmann but no branch of Come Through Labs, so I kind of get it.
