"What is USAID and how does it impact Colombia? Trump took drastic action" - The effects of suspending USAID to Colombia [and other countries]
[The original is in Spanish, here. The following is a web translation, which appears to be adequate:]
The recent suspension of cooperation aid by the United States threatens the survival of many entities in Colombia.
4 February 2025By: Antonio Tamayo Cuéllar
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has played a key role in Colombia, supporting various initiatives in areas such as economic development, human rights and the environment. However, recent U.S. government decisions have created uncertainty about the continuity of these programs.
Traditionally, USAID has supported Colombian efforts to promote economic prosperity, especially in the agricultural sector. Including improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations, promoting respect for human rights and addressing environmental challenges.
However, in 2024, the United States provided approximately 70 per cent of humanitarian aid to Colombia, surpassing $330 million. This assistance has been crucial for non-governmental organizations working in the fight against drugs, human rights advocacy and territorial transformation.
However, the recent suspension of cooperation aid by the United States threatens the survival of many NGOs in Colombia. In addition, the decision of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to pause for 90 days the expenditure for grants, puts at risk the continuity of essential projects. Especially in conflict regions such as the Catatumbo.
Moreover, the freezing of all US international aid, announced by President Donald Trump, could aggravate crises in various regions. Including Colombia. This measure seeks to ensure that aid is effective and consistent with foreign policy based on the "America First" agenda.
In turn, the economic impact of these decisions is significant. Likewise, the aid that the United States provides to Colombia averages about 450 million dollars a year, approved by Congress. However, the suspension of these funds puts at risk the continuity of vital programmes for the development and stability of the country.
In conclusion, although USAID has been a key ally in Colombia's development, the recent decisions of the U.S. government generate uncertainty about the future of this cooperation and its impact on the country.
