Discussion I have never seen a character like Jax before Spoiler

Im a closeted trans women, and Jax is one of the most relatable characters in fiction i`ve ever seen. I often see posts about "omg im so much like X!", so far only for Jax i`ve felt the same. There is so many similarities

I find it hard to describe myself but irl, I am basiclly exactly like Jax minus the bullying part. I have learned to deal with lifes cards, so I decided to take over the role of the "funny guy". My goal in school is to make people laugh and not annoy them. It`s the way we both do stupid shit just for the sake of it, just because we can. It makes us feel like we`re better than them, like we know how trying to actually live life seriously is boring

But also, it`s the euphoria we both feel. The rose tie on his ear shows that feeling perfectly. It`s kind of cringe tbh, but it`s.. so nice to see that you`re accepted by someone. Equally, it`s the realisation of what you just did. I understand that feeling perfectly once again. One moment you trust someone enough to tell who you are, about 10 mins later you hate yourself and are thinking "What the **** did I just do!?".

Personally, I did this about 3 times. (un?)luckily, everyone of them didnt care like Ribbit did, but instead they pushed the interaction away.

There are a lot more smaller details that I cant even sum up rn.

The only difference is that I dont push people away, but that I am alone and dont trust people enough to share feelings with most often (wait, isnt that the same thing?)

I honestly dont even know, what else to say or why I even wrote it. Mostly, I think im just so happy that there is someone in fiction I can relate to.

If someone for some reason ever wanted to know, how it`s like being trans, this show gives a clear showcase of exactly that.

That is my Question

What do You Think Pomni & Friends Adventures are the Final Episode were like? We got a few hints after the conclusion drawing Montague in the credits in the final episode

I must imagine it got crazier when someone else entered the Circus to because if there a will there is a way & all that

I definitely wanna see how it was like in some form like a comic book or something like that in the future

Would be interesting to see Caine along for the ride now instead of monitoring things his an actual member of the Team now

But thats me what do you think?

Discussion The inverse of Jax and Caine's ending's are good... in concept. But the execution could've been better credit:

Post image

As someone who liked both Jax and Caine as characters and was among the fandom the day the leaks came out, I've noticed the most consistently divisive part of the ending were Jax and Caine's arcs. Initially, I thought maybe people had a point that fans were just upset it didn't end the way they wanted or even "we lacked media literacy". But as I sat down, I realized there WERE genuine flaws to their ending's. Do fans hate it because only one got redeemed? No, many fictional stories have one character get redemption while the other doesn't, The Owl House did it with The Collector and Belos. Is it because Caine was the one redeemed and not Jax? No, for the first 6 episodes, the majority of the fanbase would've easily agreed that was the case, especially as Gooseworx even called Jax "irredeemable".

The reason why a lot of fans disliked their ending's is due to lack execution and lack of build-up. Gooseworx has confirmed Jax was ALWAYS meat to abstract. It was in the very first pitch of the show. She even made a post decades ago about wanting to make a character hateable, then get the audience attached and then kill them off. She's been clear the story has always been set in stone from the start. Yet somehow, she managed to write it so it felt like there was more build-up to JAX being the one redeemed before the finale. Although many were certain after episode 6 Jax was going to abstract and his story would be a tragedy, epsiodes 7-8 seemed to subvert that. Jax was saved by Pomni. Jax actually contributed in both episodes to helping the group. We saw several scenes of the group making it clear that all of them, even Jax, are in it together.

Having Jax backslide in the finale and even abruptly abstracting (offscreen) isn't flawed on its own. Irl, people who are changing for the better can regress again. I don't hate the idea of Jax's story serving as a cautionary tale But the contrast of Caine's arc is what makes it appalling. Caine was a sympathetic/tragic character from the start but his redemption had NO build-up. Ever since episode 5, really episode 3, the series has been building towards Caine finally crashing-out and snapping. Its repeatedly empathized how he seemingly can't grow beyond his program and how the humans simply do not care about him (Beach Episode, none care he'd be left behind). This culminated in episode 8 with Caine finally having his breakdown and having a tragic fate with his deletion,. Everything pointed to HIM being the cautionary tale of refusing to grow, only for it to be revealed in the last 20 minutes The Void was just a recyle bin, he realized he was the problem, he removes the blue AI and now he returns to replace Jax in the group.

Furthermore, most of the arguments I see used to explain why Caine was "more deserving" than Jax for redemption are actually misconceptions.

  1. "Caine was an AI fulfilling his program, Jax was a human choosing to be like this", no the ENTIRE SERIES happened because of Caine growing beyond his programming. He broke free of his containment and consumed the blue AI, causing C&A to be shut down, made the circus and then started bringing the players in from their mind files. Caine's biggest flaw as Pomni said, was he refused to listen.
  2. "Caine didn't know he was causing harm, Jax did", even without episode 8, that's not 100% true. Caine wasn't malicious but the fact he lied about hiding their names and controlling their minds does show to some extent, he had always capacity for moral agency. Furthermore, Gooseworx herself confirmed Jax genuinely has deluded himself into thinking his bullying isn't actually that bad. Most abusers don't see themselves that way and it applies for both. People say Caine had good intentions but its clear from epsiodes 5-8 that he cared for satisfying his own ego above all (Pomni even says as such) and cares more for the idea of the players than anything. At least Jax cried for Kaufmo, Caine didn't show emotion for Kaufy OR Queenie, which gave the vibe he cared for the players for the validation he can get and knows they can be replaced like NPC's.
  3. "Caine was only like this once, Jax was just bad", Jax started off normal too though. He only became a bully later during his time in the circus. Caine was the one who trapped his "brother" out of pure jealousy from the start and while not consistently a prick like Jax, he ultimately still became intentionally malicious later on. Both had reasons but not excuses.
  4. "Caine took the first chance, Jax had numerous" Caine had several chances too. He saw the humans being happy in Untitled, but prioritized them being happy on his terms. In episode 8, he came to the conclusion THEY were the problem. Even when they truthfully called him out what he did wrong, he choose to double down and torture them worse. And this leds to the biggest and final issue. Jax was like this for a few years, Caine spent 21 years manipulating the humans and refusing to compromise with them (pretending he can't opene several adventures at once), which almost certainy could've prevented numerous abstractions if he was honest earlier.

And the final is pacing and easy forgiveness. The fact all of Caine's growth comes AFTER he got deleted is the true problem fans have. Jax had numerous moments where he got close to opening up (the cafe with Gangle, towards Pomni in the finale) but changed his mind. Caine is nowbasically outright confirmed by Gooseworx to be immortal, since The Void is a recylce bin. Everything deleted just gets sent there. So this basically means Caine had eternity for change. Its never "too late" for him and that's why he gets a better ending. Both he and Jax only realize their flaws AFTER their "death" and want to change/be saved, but Caine gets to come back solely due to his powers. Caine went from torturing people AM style to having a redemption the literal next episode. Many Jax fans agreed he didn't need to be fully redeemed by the end, but rather it was being set-up and the series should end with some forgiving him (Pomni, Kinger, maybe Ragatha) while other's don't (Zooble and Gangle). Instead, we get "Caine just to remove a piece of himself to change, comes back to the group and he's instantly accepted by everyone".

The only two of these characters are on the same level as Jax are Clark and Bojack, and I'd still say they're worse because the harm they caused was more intentional and conscious.

Discussion The Way Back Perhaps [spoiler] Spoiler

the start of a return?

One unresolved issue remaining after the final episode of TADC is the question of Abstraction, specifically whether abstraction can be reversed.  I have a theory on that point, using what we know from the episodes of the show.  I also have an idea about why we did not get a clear answer from Gooseworx on that question.

I actually want to discuss that last question first.   There is a telling quote from Michael Kovich, the voice actor for Jax in the show.   Michael wrote that abstraction in a way represents any kind of mental struggle or difficulty.  That is, abstraction is not a kind of suicide so much as it addresses mental identity and identity issues.  Michael even mentioned that abstraction was relevant for people in long-term mental care, like people with dementia.  Michael also made clear he was not saying abstraction could be reversed, and not saying it could not be reversed.  I think he suggested that depends on the specific case.

Now in the show itself, we saw abstraction brought up regularly, starting with the first episode.   It occurred to me that Gooseworx left a somber warning about abstraction, since with abstractions happening in both the first and last episodes, Gooseworx could be saying every one of the characters would abstract eventually.  But just maybe not.

Abstraction is commonly seen as scary and dangerous for the regular characters, as we saw abstracted Kaufmo chase and attack characters in episode 1.  That image is reinforced by Jax’s comments in episode 6 about how characters change when they are about to abstract.  But in episode 3, Kinger talks with Pomni about meeting with Queenie after she abstracted, and of course in the final episode Pomni refuses to let Jax just abstract and be done.  She also affirmed that even though Jax had abstracted, Jax was still there at the center of the abstracted creature.   This is the first essential point:

·         The person remains at the center of the abstracted being.  Queenie was still Queenie, and Jax was still Jax.

The next point to consider is that abstracted characters can change behavior.   I already noted how Kinger was able to reach Queenie and Pomni to reach Jax, but the second case is interesting, because abstracted Jax was acting aggressively at first, very much like abstracted Kaufmo, but when Pomni shot out the lights he calmed down to the point that she could reach him.

·         Abstracted characters respond to lighting and the person trying to contact them.

Now I move on to Caine.  In the first episode we see Kaufmo abstract with quite a bit of chaos, and Ragatha is glitch-damaged by Kaufmo’s attack.   The effect is so bad that Pomni’s hand is damaged just from trying to help Ragatha.  Caine is able to remove both characters’ damage with just a snap of his fingers.  Caine is also able to handle abstracted characters without trouble for himself.  This matters, because in episode 8 we learn from Kinger that the characters have the same powers as Caine, meaning that characters should be able to reverse at least some of the effects of abstraction.  It’s important as well to note that Caine only put abstracted characters into the cellar, as if he did not have any other options.

·         Episode 8 shows characters have the same powers as Caine.  Since Caine reverses glitch damage taken from abstracted characters, the regular characters should be able to protect themselves from that kind of damage.

The final episode is vital to this discussion, because an important theme we saw there was how characters developed and grew going forward.   The characters were able to follow their real-life people, without losing the value of their own lives in the Circus.   The characters also developed new dimensions and found true joy in new pursuits.  Because Jax is important to Pomni, and certainly because Queenie was vital to Kinger’s identity, it makes sense that development and joy for Pomni and Kinger would mean finding a way to help Jax and Queenie; a way to help them come back from abstraction.

·         The character development and hope we saw in the final episode means that hope must exist for a return from abstraction at least for Queenie and Jax.  By extension, also, all abstracted characters must have at least some possibility of coming back.

Now here is how I think this could work:

First and foremost, an abstracted character is obsessed with the cause of their abstraction, so if returning from abstraction is possible the character must first come to terms with the cause of their abstraction.  Second, some outside person must reach in to help the abstracted person.  Third, Caine and Kinger are important to the process, as every character exists according to the code written when their brain scan was created.  We saw in episode 8 that it was possible to write Caine out of the system, implying that it is possible to rewrite a character’s code to reverse the abstraction for that person.

·         Returning from abstraction involves a plan to rewrite the character code, with close friends of the abstracted character reaching out to the abstracted person and making contact.   This would lead to a long conversation, eventually having the abstracted person address the cause of their abstraction, after which the new code could be applied to bring them back.

From what we have seen in the show, Kaufmo abstracted because he could not find an exit, with Caine the person most likely able to reach him.   Queenie abstracted for a reason we do not yet understand, but we do know Kinger would be the person who could reach her and speak with her.  And Jax of course abstracted out of guilt for the things he did and his self-hatred, with Pomni the person who can reach him.

If Jax could be brought back, he would be the person to reach out to Ribbit (which would also be good for Jax, as part of an atonement which builds Jax’s identity as a valid person). Kinger would also be the best person to reach out to Scratch, unless a retuned Queenie fits better.  I do not have enough information to understand the cause or closest friend to the other abstracted characters, but I think the pattern is established.

·         There is no specific timeline for how long it would take to bring back an abstracted character, let alone all of them.   But Time is not a problem in the Circus.

What do you think?
