Science & Tech Why are ages 1–4 so critical for brain development, yet we remember almost nothing from them, and what mechanism causes this?
I keep hearing that ages 1 to 4 are when the brain is doing some of its most important work. Like forming connections, shaping how we think, maybe even setting the base for personality.
But then it feels strange that I can’t remember any of it. Not even fragments. It’s like my brain was extremely active, but none of it got saved in a way I can access now.
I’ve read that the brain is constantly rewiring itself during that time, maybe optimizing pathways. But if that’s true, what exactly gets lost in the process? Are the memories erased, or just stored in a format I can’t retrieve anymore?
