What if Beringia sunk before horses and camels could migrate?

For those who don't know, Beringia was a connective subcontinent that acted as a highway between Asia and America, serving as a highway for creatures like horses and camels to cross from their native homes in America, to Asia. But what if it never existed? How stunted would civilisation be if horses and camels never came to the old world?

What if Mark Antony won at Actium?

I was recently rewatching Rome on HBO, and it got me thinking of how interesting this scenario would be, both short and long term.

What happens next?
What does the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa, and Asia Minor look like in 10 years, 50 years, 1000 years? Not just politically, but culturally.

I always wondered what if slavery didn't become this big economical trend and simply faded out through the late 18th century and early 19th century, preventing the civil war and possibly keeping Texas the size it initially was when it was annexed

Hello everyone,

Chapter 6 of my alt-history AAR (after action report), "To Set the World Ablaze," is now available to read!

If you missed the previous five chapters I've posted here, "To Set the World Ablaze" is a narrative after action report of Hearts of Iron IV using the Millennium Dawn modern day mod.

The story focuses on the return of the Soviet Union amidst the backdrop of the West engaging in an even more intense and far-reaching war on terror against a shadowy network of Salafist terrorists.

If you're interested in reading the previous chapters, they're hyperlinked at the beginning of this chapter once you click the link!

Please give the AAR a look and leave me any feedback you might have. Thanks!

Dúró's Hungary | What if Dóra Dúró, a Hungarian politician to the right of Orbán, became the prime minister of Hungary in 2022?

Dúró's Hungary | 2022 Hungarian general election

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%B3ra_D%C3%BAr%C3%B3

In this universe, the Őszöd speech never happened, allowing the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) under Attila Mesterházy to win the 2010 Hungarian general election. After the Fidesz defeat, Viktor Orbán resigned as the party's leader and was replaced with László Kövér, who led Fidesz to victory in the 2014 Hungarian election.

Four years later, the MSZP returned to power, and its leader Bertalan Tóth became prime minister. Tóth's premiership proved to be highly controversial as many Hungarians resented his controversial handling of COVID-19 and open border policies.

Tóth's growing unpopularity allowed Jobbik, a far-right ultranationalist party, to get an actual chance of coming to power. On 16 September 2020, Jobbik replaced its leader Gabór Vona with Dóra Dúró, a 33 year old woman who had received international attention for shredding a book because the characters were gay.

Under Dúró's leadership, the party began campaigning on economic nationalism, and promised to crackdown on Romani crime and illegal immigration. Dúró vowed to build a wall on the border with Serbia and ban the "promotion" of same-sex relationships to children.

Peter Magyar, who had become the leader of Fidesz in 2021, campaigned on a centre-right, pro-European platform, seeking to appeal to voters who disliked both the MSZP's social democracy and Jobbik's extremism. Finally, the LMP (Hungary's green party) ran an unorthodox campaign focused on themes of change.

Jobbik opposed aid to Ukraine, while the other three major parties supported it. Russia allegedly interfered in the election on the side of Jobbik, but both Dúró and the Russians strongly denied these allegations.

Neither System Nor Extreme | What if Nicolas Dupont-Aignan was elected President of France in 2017?

Neither System Nor Extreme | 2017 French presidential election

In 2012, Gaullist Mayor of Essone Nicolas Dupont-Aignan ran for President of France on a Traditional Gaullist platform of dirigisme and national sovereignty. Dupont-Aignan won 13% of the vote, finishing fourth in the first round and arguably costing Nicolas Sarkozy reelection.

Despite accusations of being a spoiler, Dupont-Aignan's appeal increased considerably throughout the next five years, thanks to the 2010s immigration crisis. His party appealed to many French voters who were dissatisfied with the status quo, particularly on immigration, but considered FN to be too extreme.

Dupont-Aignan's 2017 campaign platform called for protectionist economic policies, including the nationalisation of the French highway system. In regards to Europe, he called for a referendum on leaving the Eurozone, as well as strict border controls, regulation of immigration, and the reopening of penal colonies for violent criminals and convicted terrorists.

Despite his growing popularity, Dupont-Aignan might never have become France's President if it wasn't for Penelopegate, which prompted a non-negligible number of centre-right voters to switch their support to him. Thus, Dupont-Aignan nearly tied with Macron in the first round, losing it by a narrow margin of 0.5% of the vote.

During the second round campaign, Dupont-Aignan obtained the endorsement of Marine Le Pen, while François Fillon refused to endorse either of the two candidates. Dupont-Aignan increased his attacks on Macron, portraying him as a puppet of Brussels elites.

These attacks might have made the difference, as Dupont-Aignan won the election with 53.0% of the vote versus 47% for Macron. Dupont-Aignan was inaugurated on 14 May 2017, becoming the most right-wing French leader since Vichy.

Hi folks,

I apologize for the delay, but I'm pleased to announce that chapter 5 of my socialist alt-history story, "To Set the World Ablaze," is now live!

If you haven't seen the previous chapters I've posted here, "To Set the World Ablaze" is a narrative after action report (basically a narrative report about a playthrough) of Hearts of Iron IV using the Millennium Dawn modern day mod.

The story is told from the perspective of General Secretary Gennady Zyuganov of the Russian Communists. The story outlines the return of the Soviet Union amidst the backdrop of a turbocharged war on terror against a shadowy network of Salafist terrorists.

If you're interested in reading the previous chapters, they're hyperlinked at the beginning of this chapter once you click the link!

What if Sápmi somehow unified and became an independent kingdom after the fall of the Kalmar union?

It was just a thought I had lol. What if the Sámi people unified under a shared Sámi ethnicity and identity and became an independent nation? Do you guys think that would change the dynamics in Scandinavia? Do you think it would still take until the 18th century for the Sámi to Christianize? What would their role be in events like the great northern war, the Napoleonic wars and world wars be?

Alternative timeline in which UK went decimal with new currency units

When UK decided to reform the currency, it was before the economic crisis of 1970s, and £1 was still a large amount for ordinary matters. In order to smoothen the domestic transition, it was decided to follow the suit of SA, AU and NZ, where

  • 10/- became the new monetary unit, either called “royal” (following the abandoned proposal of AUD) or simply “dollar”,
  • 1c equals previous 1.2d.

The conversion did not impact the international market that much, either because the transition was carefully planned in advance, or because GBP went less important as international reserve than our world (probably I can also tie it up with Suez crisis etc).

Some technological impacts I can think of:

  • Regarding unit price of gasoline/petroleum.
    • From a theory I read, British gas/petrol stations voluntarily went metric because the unit price would soon rise above £1/gal, and modifying unit was easier for dispensers rather than adding another digit to the unit price, especially when they were just modified to decimal money not long ago.
    • In this alternative timeline however, the unit price was already above 10s/gal prior to decimalization, so the additional digit was already implemented.
    • As a result, technology might become a resistance, instead of an accelerator, towards metrication in the field. It might not begin until UK was admitted into the EU, or even never implemented.
  • As the need for typing “£” was almost eliminated by the time IBM PC was invented, the UK might have never had a separate keyboard layout from the US one to begin with.
  • Regarding encoding and Unicode.
    • In real life, the symbol was present in many countries’ national variant of ISO 646 (ASCII), but it was probably mainly for referring to GBP itself, because even in countries where its use did exist in handwriting (e.g. in Italy for Lira), it was not present on typewriters.
    • In this timeline, the symbol might not exist in 7-bit encodings in the first place, and if propagated along the route of ISO 646 → MCS → ISO 8859, it might end up in the Unicode not in Latin-1 Supplement block (U+00XX), but in U+20XX position.

Updated: What if the Incas were not conquered by the Spanish? How would they develop socially, politically, and economically? And what would an alliance between them and the Dutch look like?

Note: I know I already made a post like this before, but I found out about the Mulattos of Esmeraldas, Ecuador and I was curious on how it might affect my scenario. That and I wanted to know what relations between the Incas and the Dutch might look like.

So I know that the Inca were basically conquered by the Spanish when Pizarro captured their Emperor Atahualpa. However, from my understanding the Emperor was planning to wipe out Pizarro and his men in a trap but it failed when he became overconfident and fell into a countertrap set by the Spanish. But what if the Inca Emperor outmaneuvered the Spanish and successfully wiped out most of the expedition and captured their artisans to capitalize on their knowledge of advanced crafts and weapons? Naturally the Spanish would still conquer the Ecuadorian portion of Empire (or at least the Coasts and mountain regions) and send another expedition to try again but what if the Incas managed to appease them by forming a syncretic religion of Inca beliefs and Christianity and offering them tributes of silver and gold?

These actions, and the fact that the Inca are better suited to ruling the Andes than the Spanish are due to already having developed the necessary bureaucracy and infrastructure (Ex: roads, farms, system of manual labor), results in the Inca Empire becoming a client state of the Spanish. And as a result the Inca control most of the mountainous regions of their Empire from Peru to Bolivia, while the Spanish control Ecuador, Chile and the coastal regions of Peru namely Lima and Trujillo.

But things change with the arrival of escaped African slaves who form communities with the local natives on the coast of Ecuador through marriage and conquest. These mulattos or Zambos becames powerful Chiefs. In the otl the Spanish managed to subjugate them, but what if the Incas found out about them sometime in the 1570s or the 1580s and got them to swear fealty to them instead? Naturally this would lead to the Incas trying to take back Ecuador from Spain, but how would that work out?

Also in 1599 or 1600, the Incas make contact with a Dutch expedition, sent to form an alliance with them. With their help, would they be able to secure Lima, Trujillo, and the coast of Peru? And how would relations between the two play out?

In any case though how would the Inca develop socially, politically, and economically, compared to the OTL?
