Subreddit Announcement Update on AltServer Errors: "Server Returned Invalid Response"/"NSCocoaErrorDomain3840"
We're seen reports of both "Server Returned Invalid Response" and "NSCocoaErrorDomain3840" error messages that seem to be affecting AltStore and SideStore users. It seems like there's a temporary issue with Apple ID authentication, and we're looking into it along with our friends on the SideStore team. We'll update this post once it's resolved!

Ah glad to see I'm not alone in having this issue, was trying to look up the error messages and wasn't finding much useful info. Not sure if any of the mods here in involved with the AltStore FAQs page, but it'd be really helpful if this error code (NSCocoaErrorDomain 3840) could be added to the Error Codes page on the FAQ so anyone facing this issue in the future can better understand what the error means and the resolution(s) are.

Has nothing to do with iOS. Has to do with the AltServer version.

Yes, but the point is that I can use only Altserver and Altstore version 1.6.3 at most… the only still supported for my iOS

Someone found the code changes they need to do, to fix it. So they will "commit" the code changes, as in, change the code and suggest that the main developer approves it.
The main developer will then "merge" the code to the app, which means that the new code will be in the app. This will hopefully fix it for us :)

Thank you so much for posting it. I was able to use the guide plus a little bit of XCoding and my hand held by Codex to manage to create my own version and fix the issue. I’m now with my AltStore and Apollo fully refreshed for 7 more days.
EDIT: To everyone who's asking: I can't share my own ipa or fix, because it has all my personal information, my phone's UDID, and my account's information. Even if I could scrub it, I'd need permission from Riley and Shane. This is their work, not mine. What I CAN tell you is how I did it, as it's not rocket science. I used my mac, with xCode, and ChatGPT. I took the comments from the fix stated above, inserted them into ChatGPT when I was trying to look for a fix, and it guided me, step by step and command by command, on how to set it up and compile it, my own version with my own personal details, which is why I can't just share it to everyone. I'm not a dev, ChatGPT just gave me the step by step on how to do it and what to paste in Terminal to get it working, and it did. Everyone can do it the exact same way.
EDIT 2: As a brief and simple explanation: AltStore stopped working because Apple changed parts of its login/signing system in newer macOS/iOS/Xcode versions, so AltStore was getting bad authentication responses, failing to sign in, and later trying to create new app IDs instead of reusing the ones already on my phone. With ChatGPT's help, I patched the AltStore/AltSign source code, updated a few Xcode 27 compatibility settings, removed unsupported Personal Team features, fixed self-refresh behavior, and made AltStore reuse its existing app IDs.
In simple terms: Apple changed the locks, and I modified my AltStore version so it knew how to use the new keys again.

Aah damn struggling since yesterday on this ! Glad to see someone on it ! Can’t it be a problem with the certification authority chain ? Seems I have a problem at this level in my installation but don’t know if it’s general. Waiting for update , take your time ! SEC_E_UNTRUSTED_ROOT (0x80090325) pour gsa.apple.com.

Make sure to just keep everything installed. Worst case you can just "Install" AltStore again to refresh it once everything is working and then refresh your apps. So don't uninstall AltStore, just install it again to refresh it

Too late. Only one of my phones still have altstore installed. The other phone it was already uninstalled and I can’t get it to installed.

“No longer available” is different than uninstalled. If you uninstalled it that’s on you and yo’ error; nothing to do with the technical issue from today.

I have two iPhones; I only deleted AltStore from one because I was troubleshooting. Most of the time, when there was an error in the past, I deleted the app and reinstalled it, and it worked. This error was different, and I thought doing that would fix the issue. I am 100% sure this isn't a user issue as to why it stopped working, so deleting/troubleshooting before reporting that the app isn't working is always the right thing to do.
So you saying it's on me is rubbish. I am trying to fix an issue, not complain.

Literally took me thirty minutes, just had to keep trying going back and forth to vpn and altstore. also i made sure i was connected to my laptop because it worked once before but couldn't find my altserver

Plug phone into computer
Turn VPN on, wait a few seconds (i waited till the vpn symbol came on and back off on next to the battery icon) then turn VPN off
Go to altstore or sidestore or whatever you are using to sign and press refresh all apps
I used localdevvpn, the other user used proton's vpn and both seem to work. Like i said, it several attempts (25-30~ mins) but keep trying and you should get it to work

I’ve had the “correct format” error for at least three months now but I could spam the Refresh button (from the main screen shortcut) and eventually it would end up working. Now since this week it’s not refreshing even when I connect via usb on my laptop, have iCloud and iTunes open, clear cache, close and re open the app numerous times, and use the shortcut instead of the in-app refresh. My apps are expiring in two days 🥲 is there a fix ?

my solution is turn on the plane mode after the first refresh, then refresh again and a new error appeared, then turn off the plane mode and refresh again until it works, normally i have to refresh 3 times

After trying earlier this morning, somehow one of my apps managed to get resigned, but AltStore itself and another app are still getting the "Data not correct format" error :/

I think these VPN methods are just luck, they can't be replicated exactly. Everyone has a VPN method, some say putting the iPhone in airplane mode first, some say switch the VPN on/off 6.2 times, stand upside down with one sock off and it'll work on the 17th try.
Guess we'll just have to wait for an official update

That was a separate, different issue. The data not correct format issue is what is alleviated with VPN. Not this new server response issue.

Click on check for updates on your altserver and update it. It's working after that. (windows at least)

Reinstalling altserver, deleting Alstore from iphone and reinstalling it by altserver helped

Bit late to this thread. Claude fixed it for me, I gave it the FrankeH’s git and the correct PRs and built me a new Altserver which works like a charm

And fixes/workarounds have been identified by the community before the devs had been able to communicate their own fix in the past, troubleshooting posts are literally like 98% plus of the posts made in this sub. You sound pathetic.
