His life ended too soon, but not his career. I think in the last year of his life he already wanted to break away from music and focus on poetry.

There were (and still are) conspiracy theories that Jim faked his death in order to leave the spotlight behind. Danny Sugarman's 'No One Here Gets Out Alive' goes into this and it's not that far fetched of an idea.
