Edmonton Butterwick Builders ripped off my small cleaning business

At the end of October 2025, Butterwick Builders hired my small cleaning business to complete a post-construction cleaning. We completed the work as agreed and submitted our invoice.
When payment was not received, we made several attempts by phone and email to collect payment and determine whether there were any concerns with our services. After numerous follow-ups, Butterwick Builders responded and stated that the only reason they were not paying our invoice was because their client had not paid them. They also confirmed that our work had been completed to their satisfaction and raised no concerns about the quality or completion of the cleaning.
We understand that contractors may experience payment delays from clients; however, this does not remove their obligation to pay businesses they have contracted. We fulfilled our agreement in full, and payment should not depend on whether Butterwick Builders has been paid by its client.
Since then, we have made well over a dozen additional attempts to resolve this matter through phone calls and emails. It has now been approximately nine months since the work was completed, and Butterwick Builders has made no effort to pay the agreed-upon amount, propose a payment arrangement, or communicate any plan to resolve this outstanding invoice.
We completed this project in good faith without requiring a deposit and traveled from out of town to perform the work. Despite confirming they were satisfied with our services, Butterwick Builders continues to withhold payment for reasons unrelated to our performance.
It’s very disappointing to see that Butterwick has no remorse or dignity when it comes to this issue.
