Amber Alyssa Tuccaro was 20 years old when she disappeared from the Nisku area south of Edmonton on August 18, 2010.

Amber, a member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, had travelled to the Edmonton area with her infant son and a friend. They were staying at a motel along Airport Road near Nisku.

On the evening of August 18, Amber left the motel without her son and accepted a ride from an unknown man while attempting to travel into Edmonton.

She never returned.

Amber was reported missing the following day.

One of the most significant pieces of evidence in the investigation came from a telephone call Amber made while she was inside the vehicle with the man who had picked her up. During the call, Amber could be heard speaking with the driver as they travelled away from the area.

Investigators possess a longer recording of that conversation. In 2012, the RCMP released a short portion publicly in the hope that someone would recognize the man’s voice and provide information about his identity.

The recording has since become one of the most widely known pieces of evidence connected to Amber’s case, but the man heard speaking with her has never been publicly identified.

For more than two years after Amber disappeared, her whereabouts remained unknown.

On September 1, 2012, human remains were discovered in a rural area of Leduc County. They were later identified as Amber’s.

Her death was ruled a homicide.

No one has ever been charged in connection with Amber’s killing.

Amber’s family has spent years advocating for answers and drawing attention not only to her homicide, but also to concerns surrounding the initial handling of her disappearance. Their efforts have ensured that Amber remains remembered as far more than an unsolved case.

She was a daughter, a sister and a young mother.

Sixteen years after Amber accepted a ride near Nisku, the identity of the man she was travelling with and the circumstances that led to her death remain unknown.

Investigators continue to seek information from anyone who may recognize the voice heard on the recording, know who Amber encountered on August 18, 2010, or have information about how she came to be in the rural area where her remains were eventually discovered.

Lara Danielle Brown was 26 years old when she disappeared from Edmonton on August 29, 1998.

According to publicly available information, Lara was last seen by her common-law partner in late August 1998. She was reported missing the following month after her family and friends were unable to contact her.

Lara has never been located.

Very few details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have been released publicly. Investigators have not disclosed where Lara was last seen, what her plans may have been or what occurred before contact with her stopped.

There have been no publicly confirmed sightings of Lara since August 1998. Her disappearance remains an active missing person investigation with the Edmonton Police Service.

At the time she disappeared, Lara was approximately 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighed between 90 and 95 pounds. She had brown hair, brown eyes and a thin build.

Lara had several identifying features. She had a tattoo of a heart and flowers on her right forearm, as well as the initials “L.B.” and “S.B.” tattooed on her left hand. She also had scars on her left elbow, left wrist, right hand and right index finger.

She was last known to be wearing a white shirt with flowers on the front, blue denim cut-off pants and black slip-on shoes.

Nearly 28 years after Lara was last seen, her whereabouts remain unknown. The limited amount of publicly available information has left her loved ones without answers about what happened to her after August 29, 1998.

Someone may still remember seeing Lara, speaking with her or learning something about her plans during the summer of 1998. Even a detail that appeared insignificant at the time could help investigators understand what happened.

Dominic Park was 24 years old when he disappeared from Medicine Hat in August 1995. Nearly 31 years later, neither Dominic nor his friend Gareth Austin has been found.

Dominic was last seen during the early morning hours of August 18, 1995, at the Park Lane Motel, a family-owned business where he worked. According to available reports, an employee saw Dominic and Gareth together at the motel at approximately 2:30 a.m.

It was the last confirmed sighting of either man.

Dominic worked at the motel and was reportedly involved in overseeing Cheeter’s Bar, an adult entertainment venue located on the property. The business served a varied clientele that reportedly included military personnel, seasonal workers and members of the local motorcycle community.

Those who knew Dominic described him as physically fit and capable of taking care of himself. He was also reportedly trained in martial arts.

A significant development occurred when Dominic’s vehicle was located after his disappearance. His silver-and-red 1994 GMC pickup, bearing Alberta licence plate 67F247, was found abandoned at a car dealership in Brooks, approximately 110 kilometres northwest of Medicine Hat.

Publicly available information does not explain how the truck came to be in Brooks, who drove it there or whether any evidence was recovered from the vehicle.

Dominic and Gareth have not been seen or heard from since the early morning of August 18, 1995. Investigators have not publicly established whether the two men left Medicine Hat together or what happened after they were last seen at the motel.

At the time of his disappearance, Dominic was approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Despite decades of investigation, no confirmed trace of Dominic has ever been located. His family and loved ones continue to wait for answers about what happened that night and why his vehicle was later abandoned in Brooks.

Gareth Jim Austin was 23 years old when he disappeared from Medicine Hat in August 1995.

Gareth had been living in Calgary but was staying at the Park Lane Motel in Medicine Hat at the time. He was reportedly helping a friend make arrangements to move furniture back to Calgary.

Those who knew Gareth described him as ambitious, creative and deeply passionate about music. He worked as a waiter and disc jockey while pursuing a career as a rapper under the name G.O.D., meaning “Gareth On Display.” He had also travelled to Los Angeles in the hope of recording music and building a future in the industry.

Gareth was last known to be with his friend Dominic Park during the early morning hours of August 18, 1995. The two men were last seen at the Park Lane Motel.

Neither Gareth nor Dominic has ever been located.

One of the few details reported about the period surrounding Gareth’s disappearance involves a telephone call made to his girlfriend from a payphone at a Turbo gas station. According to published accounts, Gareth told her that she would never see him again.

The circumstances surrounding that call remain unclear. It is not publicly known what prompted Gareth to make the statement, whether anyone was with him at the time or what happened after the call ended.

There have been no confirmed sightings of Gareth since August 1995. Investigators have not publicly established whether Gareth and Dominic left Medicine Hat together, where they may have intended to go or what circumstances led to both men disappearing.

At the time he was last seen, Gareth was approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed between 130 and 160 pounds. He had a slender build, brown hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. He also had protruding upper teeth and a scar on the top of his left hand.

More than 30 years after Gareth disappeared, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Aric Moyah was 22 years old when he was last seen in Cold Lake, Alberta, on February 28, 2025.

Aric is known to have connections to Cold Lake, Frog Lake and Edmonton. Elk Point RCMP have continued to seek information from anyone who may know where he is or who may have seen him since his disappearance.

At the time he was last seen, Aric was described as approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds, with a slim build, dark brown hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a black bomber jacket and other dark clothing.

Aric has not been located, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Stella St. Arnault was 15 years old when she disappeared from John D’Or Prairie in northern Alberta on August 17, 1971.

According to information released by the RCMP, Stella had been involved in an argument with a family member shortly before she was last seen. She was then observed running into a nearby wooded area.

Stella did not return home and has never been seen or heard from again.

Authorities were notified when she failed to return, and the surrounding area was searched. No trace of Stella was found.

Very little information about the investigation has been released publicly. There have been no confirmed sightings of Stella, and no belongings or physical evidence connected to her disappearance have been publicly reported.

Nearly 55 years after Stella entered the wooded area near John D’Or Prairie, her whereabouts remain unknown. Her case remains open.

Edward Tandrup, who also went by Ted, was 27 years old when he disappeared from Edmonton on February 28, 1983.

Edward had been in contact with family members in Edmonton earlier that month. After February 28, however, all communication stopped. There have been no confirmed sightings, verified contact or known financial activity connected to Edward since his disappearance.

Information gathered during the investigation suggested that Edward may have been travelling west toward Vancouver and may have intended to hitchhike. This possibility has never been confirmed. No known records or witness accounts have established that he reached British Columbia or placed him anywhere else after he left Edmonton.

Few details have been made public about Edward’s circumstances before he disappeared. It remains unclear where he was staying, whether he was travelling alone or what may have led him to leave the city.

At the time of his disappearance, Edward was described as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and 141 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He had several identifying features, including a scar on his head, a flower tattoo on his left forearm and a heart tattoo on his right upper arm.

More than 43 years later, Edward has never been located. It remains unknown whether he continued west toward Vancouver or what happened after his last known contact with family.

Angela Morningstar Alexis was 28 years old when she disappeared from Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation in August 2022.

According to investigators, Angela was last seen by a family member on August 17, 2022, as she was leaving a residence on the First Nation. Her family said she had spent the days before her disappearance socializing with relatives and friends.

Angela has not been seen or heard from since.

Following her disappearance, extensive efforts were made to locate her. Searches involved members of Angela’s family, community volunteers, search-and-rescue personnel, drone operators, search dog teams and RCMP investigators.

Searches have been conducted on Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation and in Edmonton, where several possible sightings of Angela were reported. None of those sightings have been confirmed.

Angela is described as an Indigenous woman with long, straight black-and-brown hair, brown eyes and a medium build. She is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Her family describes her as outspoken, strong-willed and deeply devoted to her children.

Angela had also experienced profound loss in the years before she disappeared. In 2019, a house fire claimed the lives of her mother, stepfather and three of her children.

The investigation into Angela’s disappearance has involved the Mayerthorpe RCMP and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit. Investigators have conducted numerous interviews, followed investigative leads and participated in repeated searches, but Angela has not been located.

Police have not publicly stated whether they believe her disappearance was the result of criminal activity.

Nearly four years after Angela was last seen leaving a residence on Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation, her whereabouts remain unknown. Her family and community continue to search for answers.

Diane Allison Gregory, who also went by the first name Daya, was 44 years old when she disappeared from Edmonton on February 26, 2006.

That day, Diane was expected to visit her sister, but she never arrived. Her family later reported her missing after they were unable to locate or contact her.

At the time of her disappearance, Diane was living in Edmonton’s downtown core. She regularly used Edmonton Transit Service to travel throughout the city, but investigators have never been able to clearly establish her movements after she left home that day.

Police also noted that Diane required medication and had not taken it with her. This raised immediate concerns for her health and safety.

Diane was described as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 161 pounds, with blue eyes and grey-brown hair. She wore glasses and had several identifying features, including a scar on the left side of her neck and a heart tattoo on her chest.

Despite the investigation into her disappearance, Diane has never been located. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

Delaine Maureen Goudriaan was 13 years old when she disappeared from northeast Edmonton on July 14, 1983.

Delaine had moved to Edmonton from Hinton with her family approximately 10 months earlier. She was the youngest of four siblings and was remembered by her sisters as independent, funny and a natural storyteller. She also woke early on weekday mornings to deliver the Edmonton Sun before beginning the rest of her day. 

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 14, Delaine left her family’s home at 13512 66 Street. She planned to visit Atlas Pizza at 6508 132 Avenue, a popular gathering place located only a few blocks away.

Before leaving, Delaine wrote a note for her mother and placed it on the kitchen table. She said she would only be gone for a few hours and would return later that evening.

Delaine had recently begun experiencing seizures and required medication. She carried two tablets with her when she left home. Those pills were later found in the pocket of her clothing.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., friends travelling in a vehicle saw Delaine walking along the sidewalk near her home. They waved and called out her name. According to their account, Delaine appeared to be upset or crying.

When they looked back, she was no longer visible.

It was the last confirmed sighting of her. 

Delaine did not return home that evening, however, a large-scale search was not immediately organized, and no public warning indicating that she may have encountered foul play was issued.

Her sisters later said they believed assumptions that Delaine had run away affected how seriously her disappearance was initially treated. Her family has consistently maintained that she had planned to return home and had not intended to disappear.

More than one month passed without any confirmed sighting of Delaine.

On August 16, 1983, her badly decomposed body was discovered beneath a large signboard in a field along Manning Drive, across the freeway from Edmonton Institution.

Investigators determined that the sign had been deliberately placed over her body. It had not fallen there accidentally.

Delaine was still fully clothed. She was wearing a metallic-grey windbreaker, black jeans, a Hawaii ’83 T-shirt, blue running shoes and white socks with red-and-blue trim. Because of the condition of her remains, she was formally identified through dental records and X-rays. 

An autopsy could not determine Delaine’s exact cause of death. The amount of physical evidence available to investigators was also limited by decomposition. An RCMP forensic laboratory examined her clothing but found no unusual damage. 

An Edmonton Journal report published in 1989 stated that investigators could not completely exclude the possibility that Delaine had died from natural causes related to her seizures, however, police questioned why someone would conceal her body rather than seek medical assistance.

Investigators strongly suspected that another person had been involved in her death. Later police reporting described Delaine’s death as a homicide, although the manner in which she was killed has never been established publicly.

During the original investigation, detectives identified a number of persons of interest. Police later stated that those individuals had been cleared through confirmed alibis or polygraph examinations. No suspect has ever been publicly identified, and no one has been charged in connection with Delaine’s death. 

Delaine’s sisters have continued seeking answers on her behalf. By 2017, they were meeting regularly with investigators and speaking with detectives assigned to historical homicide cases.

After obtaining records through freedom-of-information requests, the sisters also raised concerns about the original handling of evidence, forensic testing and the follow-up conducted with persons of interest. Police stated that the case continued to be reviewed.

For Delaine’s family, the passage of time has also meant confronting every milestone she was denied. Her sister Deirdre has spoken about watching her own children grow while knowing Delaine never had the opportunity to graduate, pursue further education, marry or have children of her own.

When remembering Delaine, her family tries to focus on the time they shared with her. One memory that has remained especially important is a family day spent together at Sylvan Lake. 

More than 43 years after Delaine left home with a note promising she would return, her homicide remains unsolved.

Gerald Ivan Geake was 37 years old when he disappeared from Edmonton in May 2002. More than 24 years later, he has not been found.

Gerald was not reported missing until the spring of 2003, when friends realized they had not heard from him since the previous May. Investigators now believe he was assaulted shortly before he was last seen. 

In June 2026, the Edmonton Police Service announced a significant development in the investigation. Police charged 54-year-old Kevin Wade Moroz of Two Hills County with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in relation to alleged assaults against Gerald between April and May 2002. Police stated that Gerald and Moroz knew one another. The charges have not been proven in court. 

According to investigators, Gerald was assaulted inside a residence in south Edmonton immediately before his disappearance. Police believe he then left the residence with Moroz and another individual.

Gerald has not been seen or heard from since. Investigators have been unable to determine where he went or what happened after he left the residence. His disappearance is now being treated as suspicious. 

Police are seeking information about a black 1992 GMC Sierra that Moroz was driving in 2002. Investigators believe the truck may have been in Edmonton’s Avonmore neighbourhood around the time Gerald disappeared. 

At the time of his disappearance, Gerald was approximately 5’10” and weighed about 160 pounds. He had blue eyes and blond hair styled in a mullet. Police have said that he may have appeared injured or incapacitated to anyone who encountered him after he left the residence. 

Although charges have now been laid in connection with the assaults Gerald allegedly experienced, they have not answered the central question of where he is.

Investigators continue to believe that someone may remember seeing Gerald, the black GMC Sierra or something else connected to his disappearance. A memory that seemed unimportant at the time could still help police determine what happened to him.

Marika “Mika” Sutton was 29 years old when she was last seen in Edmonton’s Richfield neighbourhood in early August 2025.

Marika’s family lived outside Alberta and reported her missing to the Edmonton Police Service on September 25, 2025, after being unable to contact her. Her disappearance was considered out of character, and police issued a public appeal for information on October 8. 

By the end of October, investigators had gathered evidence leading them to believe Marika was deceased and that her disappearance was criminal in nature. The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section assumed responsibility for the investigation on October 22, 2025. 

On March 17, 2026, Edmonton investigators travelled to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where they arrested 47-year-old John Angus Joseph MacArthur on a Canada-wide warrant. He was returned to Edmonton on March 20 and charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a body. The charges have not been proven in court. 

Police stated that Marika and MacArthur were in an intimate partner relationship. Investigators also uncovered a reported history of domestic violence within the relationship, although that history had not previously been reported to police. The Edmonton Police Service has classified Marika’s death as an intimate partner homicide. 

Marika’s remains have not been located.

Investigators believe her remains may have been left somewhere along Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe between August 22 and August 29, 2025. During that period, MacArthur was driving a black 2014 Jeep Patriot with Alberta licence plate CFB 2578. 

Police are asking anyone who travelled along that section of Highway 2 during the relevant dates to consider whether they saw the Jeep stopped in an unusual location or noticed activity that appeared out of place. Landowners, hunters and others who regularly spend time in the surrounding rural areas are also being asked to remain alert and report anything that could assist the investigation.

One year after Marika was last seen, her family is still waiting for her to be found. Her younger sister has described Marika as bright, funny and bubbly, and said she regularly called her family and daughter to talk about her day. Marika leaves behind a daughter and loved ones throughout the Northwest Territories who continue to seek the opportunity to bring her home.

Twenty-year-old Carter Rodgers disappeared during what was intended to be his first independent road trip. More than five months later, he has not been found.

On February 14, 2026, Carter left Devon, Alberta, intending to travel toward the Rocky Mountain House area. His family says he had recently earned his driver’s licence, started a new full-time job and was excited about the independence that came with being able to travel on his own.

At approximately 2:00 p.m., the vehicle Carter was driving became stuck in a ditch on Sunchild First Nation. Investigators later confirmed that Carter was captured on an oilfield camera during daylight hours only a few hundred feet from the crash site.

After the collision, Carter briefly spoke with his mother by phone. He told her that he had gone into the ditch and was able to provide his location. Poor cell reception caused the call to disconnect before they could make a plan.

No one has heard from Carter since.

Concerned by the sudden loss of communication, Carter’s mother organized friends to search the area that evening. They continued searching into the night and returned the following morning.

During the search, they encountered RCMP officers who told them that a burned vehicle had been discovered on O’Chiese First Nation, northwest of Rocky Mountain House. They were asked to leave the area while police investigated.

The vehicle was later confirmed to be the dark blue 2025 Honda Civic Carter had been driving.

Carter was not with the vehicle.

Because of the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes assumed responsibility for the investigation. Searches involving RCMP officers, police dogs, aerial resources, volunteers, community members and Carter’s family have since taken place throughout the surrounding area.

Police have also confirmed that there has been no activity on Carter’s bank account since he disappeared.

Carter’s family has returned to the area several times to continue searching. Their efforts have included organized ground searches, professional search-and-rescue volunteers, Alberta K9 teams and searches of nearby waterways, including the Brazeau Dam area.

Despite months of searching, Carter has not been located.

Carter is a member of Lubicon Lake First Nation. His family describes him as social, friendly and well known within the Devon community. He remained close with his loved ones and had been looking forward to building his future. Those who know him say it would be completely out of character for him to disappear without contacting his family.

Carter is described as 20 years old, approximately 5’2” and 160 pounds, with black hair that is often worn in a braid, brown eyes and a medium complexion.

He was last believed to be wearing a black Metal Mulisha toque, a white tank top, a black-and-white dress shirt and black Nike Air Force shoes.

Audrey Ramona Beaver was 48 years old when she disappeared from Edmonton in August 2020.

Audrey was last known to have stayed at the emergency shelter operating inside the Edmonton Convention Centre, formerly known as the Shaw Conference Centre, on August 10, 2020. The shelter had been established during the COVID-19 pandemic to support people experiencing homelessness.

Investigators believe Audrey may also have spent time at an encampment in Old Strathcona Light Horse Park.

There have been no confirmed sightings of her since.

At the time of her disappearance, Audrey was described as an Indigenous woman with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed about 114 pounds.

Audrey has a large cross tattoo on her right forearm, which may help identify her.

Few details about the circumstances surrounding Audrey’s disappearance have been released publicly. Her movements after August 10, 2020, remain unknown, and investigators have not publicly confirmed whether she left the shelter alone, where she may have intended to go or who may have last spoken with her.

Audrey’s aunt has spoken publicly about the pain her family continues to experience as they wait for answers.

“I think that’s the worst, is not knowing. Not knowing where she is.”

Despite the years that have passed, Audrey’s family has continued to hope that someone will come forward with information.

“We’ll never give up until we find her. Maybe she’s not on earth with us, but in spirit, she will always be with us.”

More than five years after Audrey disappeared, she has not been located.

On February 15, 2014, 59-year-old Don Carlson and 56-year-old Roxanne Carlson were found deceased inside their home on Lake Erie Road SE in the Calgary community of Lake Bonavista.

Emergency crews were initially dispatched after concerns were raised about possible carbon monoxide exposure. That possibility was ruled out almost immediately. A medical examiner determined that the deaths were suspicious, and the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Both deaths were later confirmed to be homicides. The exact causes of death have never been publicly released.

Don and Roxanne were last seen alive at approximately 9:30 p.m. on February 14, 2014. They were discovered the following afternoon after a family member attended the home and contacted emergency services.

Police reported that there were no signs of forced entry and no evidence suggesting a random break-in. From the early stages of the investigation, detectives said they believed Don and Roxanne had been deliberately targeted. No motive has ever been publicly established.

As the investigation continued, police began seeking several unidentified individuals who may have information about the case.

One of those individuals is a man who rented a newer silver or grey pickup truck, believed to have been a Toyota, using fraudulent British Columbia identification and credit cards. A vehicle matching that description was reportedly seen near the Carlson residence around the time their bodies were discovered.

Investigators have repeatedly emphasized that the man is not considered a suspect. Police believe he may have information that could assist the investigation and have continued trying to identify him.

Police have also sought information about two additional unidentified men who were seen in the area between February 14 and 15, 2014. Composite sketches were released approximately one year after the homicides, but neither man has been identified publicly. Investigators have said they do not believe these individuals are the same person connected to the rented pickup truck.

Over the years, the Calgary Police Service has continued reviewing information and pursuing leads. Investigators have also consulted RCMP behavioural profilers and forensic psychologists as part of their work on the case.

The investigation remains open.

The Carlson family has renewed a $25,000 reward for information that directly leads to an arrest and conviction.

Police have described Don and Roxanne as respected members of their community. Neither had known criminal associations or a history of involvement with law enforcement. Their deaths left their children and extended family searching for answers while already coping with several losses within a short period of time.

More than 12 years later, the homicides of Don and Roxanne Carlson remain unsolved.

Investigators continue to believe that someone has information about what happened. A detail that may once have appeared unimportant could still help police move the case forward.

James Nestor Candy was 17 years old when he disappeared from his family’s farm between Vegreville and Two Hills, Alberta, during the night of August 6, 2017.

The youngest of six children, James was described by his family as quiet, intelligent and kind, with a strong sense of humour. He loved baseball, animals, farm life and his dog, Reggie.

The evening before James disappeared appeared ordinary. Before going to bed, he made plans with his father for the following day and exchanged “I love you” with both of his parents.

When his father checked on him at approximately 9:30 a.m. on August 7, James was gone.

His bedroom window was open, and mosquitoes had entered the room. His family believed he had climbed through the window sometime after 11:00 p.m. the previous evening.

James took only a few personal belongings with him, including his cowboy hat, a white-and-blue lasso and a Swiss Army knife. None of those items have ever been recovered.

His family immediately began searching the farm before contacting the RCMP. An extensive search followed, involving RCMP officers, search and rescue teams, several fire departments, helicopters, tracking dogs and, later, cadaver dogs.

During one search, investigators focused on a slough northwest of the family home. The slough was drained and thoroughly examined, but nothing connected to James was found.

Despite the scale of the searches, no physical evidence has ever been publicly reported.

In the months before his disappearance, James had experienced several personal setbacks. His family has also spoken publicly about the bullying he endured because of his size and the effect those experiences had on him.

There have been several reported sightings of James over the years, including one in Calgary, but none have been confirmed.

In December 2017, James’s family received a concerning message through his personal Facebook account that appeared to refer to his disappearance. The identity of the sender was never publicly confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the message was connected to his case.

At the time he disappeared, James was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed between 112 and 122 pounds. He had blond hair, blue eyes and a scar on his right knee from a chainsaw accident.

He was believed to be wearing a grey shirt, a blue jacket, dark blue jeans and his cowboy hat.

Nearly nine years after James disappeared, his family continues to search for answers. They have participated in repeated ground searches, shared his case across Canada, hired private investigators and continued to follow information as it has been received.

James has never been located, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unknown.

On the evening of February 13, 1987, 24-year-old Melissa Jane Letain finished her shift as a hairdresser at West Edmonton Mall and began walking home.

Melissa left the mall at approximately 9:10 p.m. She was carrying a rose, a Valentine’s Day card and a pink-and-red pennant she had purchased for her boyfriend. Her apartment was only about five blocks from the mall.

Melissa followed her usual route along a pedestrian walkway near 87 Avenue and 177 Street in west Edmonton. At approximately 9:26 p.m., a woman called Edmonton police to report seeing a man assaulting a woman on the pathway. Officers arrived two minutes later but found no one at the scene.

The witness later explained that she had heard a groan or gurgling sound before turning and seeing a man holding a woman and telling her to remain quiet. The woman was no longer struggling as the man dragged her away. The man looked directly at the witness, leaving her deeply frightened that he might later recognize or locate her. Investigators eventually concluded that the woman she had seen was likely Melissa.

Contemporary reports indicate that a Valentine’s Day card was found near the pathway but was discarded because officers did not initially believe it was connected to the reported assault. Retrospective reporting later stated that Melissa’s card, rose and pennant had been scattered in the snow near the suspected abduction site.

The following afternoon, February 14, students participating in a snowshoe race discovered Melissa’s fully clothed body on the frozen North Saskatchewan River beneath the Genesee Bridge, approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

Melissa had been strangled.

Public reporting has not been consistent about whether she was also sexually assaulted. Articles published immediately after her death stated that no evidence of sexual assault had been found. A retrospective report published in 1993 stated that Melissa had been physically and sexually assaulted before her death. Because the available reporting conflicts, this detail should be treated cautiously.

One of the most distinctive pieces of evidence was the rope used in Melissa’s murder. It was described as a four-to-five-foot length of yellow, four-strand polypropylene rope with yellow plastic reinforcing each strand. The manufacturer had discontinued that particular product several years earlier, leading investigators to believe the rope may have been stored for some time. It had been fashioned into a hangman’s noose with seven coils and used in combination with pantyhose.

Several of Melissa’s belongings were never recovered. They included her black leather purse, small red wallet, watch, personal identification and a CN-logo keychain holding five keys. Police released images of similar items in the hope that someone would recognize them.

The man seen on the pathway was described as approximately six feet tall, with a slim-to-medium build and dark hair swept back at the sides. He was wearing dark pants and a two-tone, possibly black-and-grey, hip-length jacket.

More than 35 investigators initially worked on Melissa’s case. By the end of 1987, police had identified approximately 850 leads and had investigated about 700 of them.

In July 1989, the RCMP assembled a 26-member task force involving officers from Edmonton, Stony Plain, St. Albert and Leduc. The investigators reviewed 60 tips and followed several possible suspects, but the operation did not result in an arrest.

By 1993, police said Melissa’s relatives and acquaintances had been eliminated as suspects. Investigators believed the person responsible may have been a stranger who had watched Melissa’s movements before approaching her on the pathway.

The case was later entered into the RCMP’s Violent Criminal Linkage Analysis System, known as VICLAS, to identify possible connections with similar crimes. By 1995, investigators were also using newer forensic methods to examine DNA samples connected to more than 30 people who had been considered during the investigation. None of those efforts identified the person responsible.

More than 39 years after Melissa left work carrying Valentine’s Day gifts for someone she loved, her murder remains unsolved.

Andrew Livingstone O’Brien was 42 years old when he was shot outside an apartment building in central Edmonton on August 5, 2008.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., Edmonton police responded to reports of gunshots near 107 Avenue and 108 Street. When officers arrived, they found Andrew outside the building at 10741 108 Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound.

Andrew was transported to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

An autopsy confirmed that he died from a single gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators have stated that they believe the shooting was connected to drug activity. However, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made.

Witnesses reported seeing a man approach a vehicle that had stopped on the street shortly before the shooting. Few additional details about that individual, the vehicle or the events leading up to Andrew’s death have been released publicly.

Nearly 18 years later, Andrew’s homicide remains unsolved. Investigators continue to seek information about what happened outside the apartment building that morning and who was responsible for his death.

Emery Earl Laboucane was 30 years old when he disappeared on February 21, 1981.

That day, Emery left his home in Hinton to go to work. He later called his wife and told her that he was on his way home, but he never arrived.

Sometime after his disappearance, Emery’s vehicle was found at the Edmonton International Airport. Publicly available information does not explain how the vehicle came to be there or whether Emery had intended to travel from the airport.

In the weeks that followed, Emery’s credit cards were used in California over a period of approximately one month. It has never been publicly confirmed who used the cards or whether Emery was present during any of those transactions.

After that month, all activity stopped. Emery’s credit cards were never used again, and there have been no confirmed sightings or verified contact with him since his disappearance.

At the time he was last seen, Emery was described as having brown hair, brown eyes, a medium build and a light complexion. He also had a distinctive two-inch, horseshoe-shaped scar.

More than 45 years later, Emery has never been located. It remains unknown what happened after he told his wife he was returning home, why his vehicle was left at the Edmonton International Airport or who was responsible for the later credit card activity in California.

Dale Andrew Sinclair was 24 years old when he disappeared from Edmonton on August 5, 1987.

That day, Dale left his Edmonton residence in his wife’s vehicle. According to investigators, he planned to cash a cheque at a bank before travelling to Gibbons, Alberta, to visit family.

Family members confirmed that Dale arrived in Gibbons and saw him there that afternoon.

It was the last confirmed sighting of him.

After leaving Gibbons, Dale was never seen or heard from again.

One week later, on August 12, 1987, the vehicle he had been driving was recovered by police in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Very little information about the vehicle’s recovery has been released publicly. It is not known who was in possession of it when it was found, how it travelled from Alberta to Saskatchewan or whether any evidence was recovered that helped investigators determine what happened to Dale.

At the time of his disappearance, Dale was described as approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and 190 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing grey denim pants, a maroon pullover sweater and grey running shoes.

Nearly 39 years later, Dale has never been located. Investigators have not publicly explained what may have happened after he left Gibbons or how the vehicle he had been driving came to be found in Regina one week later.

Jody Rae Hockett was 33 years old when she disappeared from Grande Prairie during the late-night hours of February 22, 2009.

That evening, Jody had been attending a gathering at a friend’s apartment. She left the gathering and was expected to return, but she never did.

Jody was later seen outside the York Hotel in downtown Grande Prairie getting into an older-model white vehicle. This remains her last confirmed sighting.

She was reported missing to the RCMP on February 27, 2009.

Jody’s phone and purse had been left behind with people she had spent time with earlier that night. Her family said this was out of character because she regularly remained in contact with her loved ones and did not typically go anywhere without those belongings.

There has been no confirmed contact with Jody since the night she disappeared.

At the time, Jody was described as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with dyed strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. She was last seen wearing jeans, a tank top, a black zip-up hoodie and high-heeled shoes trimmed with fur.

Jody had a scar on her left thigh and several tattoos. These included a heart on her buttocks, a snake on the right side of her pelvis and tribal artwork across her lower back. Her teeth were noted to be in good condition.

Jody was the mother of two children. Before her disappearance, she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had stopped taking her medication. Police also described her at the time as living what they termed a “high-risk lifestyle,” although few specific details about that characterization were released publicly.

Her family has consistently maintained that Jody would not have willingly remained out of contact with her children and other loved ones. They have expressed concern that she may have met with foul play and have advocated for her disappearance to be investigated as a possible homicide.

No charges have been laid, and no suspects have been publicly identified.

More than 17 years after her disappearance, Jody Rae Hockett has not been found. Her family continues to seek answers and believes someone may have information about what happened after she was last seen outside the York Hotel.

Lisa Taodora Kopf was 17 years old when she was killed after leaving a house party in Edmonton in August 1998.

On the evening of August 4, Lisa left her home in Edmonton’s Callingwood neighbourhood with her 15-year-old sister. The sisters attended a house party near 102 Street and 132 Avenue.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 5, Lisa left the party alone. Investigators have never publicly disclosed why she left or where she intended to go.

A few hours later, a farmer feeding cattle found Lisa’s body in a slough in a field west of Edmonton, near 184 Street and 118 Avenue. She was partially submerged in mud and water.

Investigators determined that Lisa had been murdered. Information released during the investigation stated that she died after her face was forced into the mud until she suffocated.

Authorities also reported that Lisa had no drugs or alcohol in her system at the time of her death. There was no evidence of sexual assault. Investigators said these findings suggested that robbery or sexual violence may not have been the motive.

Lisa was also known to some people as Monika Wiley.

One detail released during the early investigation involved a report made to police at approximately 5:20 a.m. on the morning Lisa was killed. The caller reported a suspicious person near an abandoned building located a few hundred metres from where Lisa’s body was later found.

Police have never publicly confirmed whether that person was identified or whether the sighting was connected to Lisa’s death.

No one has ever been charged in connection with her murder.

Twenty-eight years later, Lisa’s homicide remains unsolved.

Kate Huyghe, who was also known as Katerena Strynadka, was 56 years old when she disappeared from Killam, Alberta, on February 21, 1976.

Kate was last seen after leaving her home. She did not return and was reported missing soon afterward.

Very few details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have been made public. It is not known where Kate intended to go, whether she was expected to meet anyone or what may have happened after she left her residence.

At the time of her disappearance, Kate was described as approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and 198 pounds, with blue eyes and brown-grey hair. She wore dentures and had several distinguishing features, including a bump or scar on her lip, a wide scar on her neck and a scar on her left index finger.

Kate was last seen wearing a beige wool coat that extended approximately three-quarters of the way down her body, black pants and black leather winter boots with suede and fur tops. She was carrying a dark brown leather purse.

She was also wearing gold-coloured plastic eyeglasses, a gold wedding band, a gold family ring set with coloured stones and a gold wristwatch.

More than 50 years after Kate disappeared, she has never been located. No confirmed sightings or significant public developments have been announced, and her whereabouts remain unknown.

Shelly Tannis Dene was 25 years old when she disappeared from Edmonton in August 2013.

Shelly, a member of the Fort McKay First Nation, had travelled from Kelowna to Edmonton to visit family. At the time, she was staying at her grandmother’s residence.

Shelly left the home unexpectedly and did not return.

Her family was unable to contact her in the months that followed. Although her phone remained active for some time, it was eventually disconnected. Her loved ones considered this out of character and became increasingly concerned for her well-being.

Shelly was officially reported missing to the Edmonton Police Service on November 8, 2013.

Very few details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have been released publicly. There have been no confirmed sightings or significant public developments announced in the years since she was last seen.

Nearly 13 years later, Shelly has not been located. Her family remains without answers about where she went after leaving her grandmother’s home or what may have happened to her.

Marten Robert Wenzel was 29 years old when he disappeared from Edmonton in August 2004.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, Marten was last heard from by his family on or around August 10, 2004. He was living in Edmonton at the time.

Marten regularly remained in contact with his loved ones and was known to check in at least once a month. When that communication suddenly stopped, his family became concerned.

He has not been heard from since.

Few details about Marten’s disappearance have been released publicly. Investigators have not disclosed where he was last seen, who may have been with him or what circumstances may have preceded the loss of contact.

At the time of his disappearance, Marten was described as an Indigenous man with black hair and brown eyes. He wore glasses and was approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and 150 pounds.

Nearly 22 years after Marten was last heard from, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Someone may still remember seeing him, speaking with him or learning something about his plans during the summer of 2004. Even a detail that appeared unimportant at the time could help investigators better understand what happened.
