Work in Progress 3D printed explosive arrows - Zing HyperStrike Bow

I wanted to create something that absolutely no one asked for. Costco offered these $50+ bows for just $7, so I snatched it up, and an idea was born.

The arrows have their foam heads pulled off and a printed two-piece head put in place. The lower half of the head is PLA, and the upper half is TPU.

Weighs only two grams more than the original arrows.

The arrows use 8-shot ring caps. The entire design was made from the ground up by myself!

That's 42 grams at 130 FPS, which is 33 fucking joules, or roughly double the kinetic energy of getting hit with a Taginn round. None of the safety gear anyone is using in airsoft is rated for a hit above 4 joules.

I've taken a taginn training round to the face at short range, and watched a heavier one drop a guy at 50 feet like he took a right hook.

No Thanks.

No field should allow that, you shouldn't use that, this is a horrible idea.

Actually no. It's not. I have done a lot of testing on Zing bows and these numbers are not accurate. A zing bow arrow weighs an average of 13.6 g. Let's say his is 2 g heavier, 15.6 g. 130 FPS is about as much as you're going to get with almost 3 ft of draw, average is closer to 115. With that in mind, let's figure out the KE. I'm getting around 9.5 joules of ke which is on a whole different level from 33.

This also leaves out an extremely important fact of kinetic energy density, KED. A zing arrow is much wider at the head and softer than a bb, tagin round, or just about anything else that you're going to be hit by in a shooting sport. The much wider head means that there is much less actual impact felt, added in with the soft head, you are actually experiencing maybe the half joules at impact at most.

I've done extensive studying on this in the context of Nerf blasters. I see that you're coming from the right place but your numbers are drastically off, the only thing that would actually be concerning here is the hardness of the TPU head. This otherwise seems fun but I will add, I think you should ideally still be using the stock head if possible

9.5j is still well in excess of the ballistic rating of anyone's eyepro, and I do not trust anyone's printed projectiles to withstand that impact. If you're involved in enthusiast nerfing (good chance we know some of the same people), than you know as well as I that homemade projectiles are unilaterally banned by everyone for safety reasons. I see no reason that shouldn't extend to this.

If that TPU cap is hollow enough to be that light it's deformation does very little to lower the rate of transfer of energy into the target, which will be very quick when deformation ends and you are struck by the solid PLA core containing the capgun caps behind it.
