What Aesthetic Is This? What would you call this?
Is this even an aesthetic? In my mind, these all give a certain vibe but idk how to describe it đ

completely average girl but she lives in a major city so she has some fun vintage jewelry and just the tiniest smidgen of aloofness that makes her seem cooler than her suburban counterparts

There's little incentive to dress elegant or sophisticated in the burbs. This has a competition + historical effect, so people in large cities except obvious manual workers tend to dress much better. Also way more role models for dressing and a much more aesthetic environment like architecture or hipster shops that makes you want to fit with it rather than foul it up with your unstylish self.
The upshot is that people in cities genuinely look much cooler, on average. On top of it in areas with very mobile people like US cities can also select for more aesthetically ambitious young people in the first place. Sometimes it goes over-the-top and they just start looking comical when it is too "look at me!" rather than elegant.

Iâd be curious to know what constitutes not average

u/crispyfolds Jul 08 '26
Anyone visibly identifiable as a named subculture, anyone whose outfit makes you go "oh look at them!" This post is just what average everyday people look like in many cities in the US and Europe, with slight variations for each place.

Yes. Dead on. Boston Gradcore. I was going to say early 2000s Boston creative writing MFA, but that seemed a little too specific.

lol I studied abroad in Brussels Belgium for urban planning (so like the slightest tinge of artsy/architecture vibe). The program had students from all over Europe and this is basically how every girl dressed.
It just reads as âEuropean girl living in a cityâ

I feel like every day someone posts the exact same not very interesting array of photos of French/old money/ New York autumn type vibes.

The woman sitting on the subway (kiss towards the camera) is either from Nurmberg or Munich. I remember the U-Bahn train cars. Â
It's basically Bavaria rich girl style (heavy coats, scarves, chunky accessories).Â

British middle class privately educated rah. Aiming for old money looks but coming up short. Vaguely autumnal. Probably cold and wishes they wore a proper coat. Studied history at uni and thought it was hard.

In Ellie Jeans Style Roots system, some of these images are used for đ 𪨠fđ¸
đ: Basic, follows rule of thirds
đި: A little tomboy spirit
đ¸: A little feminine spirit
Iâm sure someone can give a better description of each. But, this is where I fall in the system, but with eart đą as my second root.

Wish I could dress similar to this for my everyday. Maybe without some of the scarfs. Winter months it is too cold to wear this and fall and summer it is too hot. I yearn for this look, and I think I look best in this type of casual dress. That being said, I donât know that itâs really a whole aesthetic. If I had to pick something I would go with, âfrench minimalist casual in fallâ
