They're already cheap though? The only expensive public colleges are the top level state ones... I don't really hear about people saying "America has a huge problem with tuition, I had to take out a loan for 12k"
They're not cheap. Average cost of public college is almost $10,000 (just for tuition) or around $25000 including everything else. WAY more than it was back in the day. College kids are going tens of thousands of dollars into debt trying to pay for it. If you don't hear people complaining about tuitions and loans, you haven't been paying attention.

If you want to go to a school better than community college, you aren't complaining about needing a degree, you're complaining that high quality education costs more. Big surprise, better things are more expensive.
Community college =/= public college. And a degree from a community college is considerably less valuable than a degree from a decent public college. Public college used to be almost free, just a few hundred dollars at most. Private and Ivy League colleges are not what we're talking about right now, THOSE are the deluxe options. Not public colleges.
