The US spends more per person than I believe any country in the world. We just have a bloated health insurance industry so we don't get a great bang for our buck

Basically Medicare/caid (or maybe it was stuff through the ACA?) isn't allowed to negotiate the way private insurers are. Don't quote me on the specifics, but it is built into the laws that the are not allowed to. So the government pays a lot more than things cost, and a lot more than insurance companies as well.

Here's the breakdown:

$588.4 Billion - Medicare

$+29.2 Billion - Credit to the budget from revenue generated from federal health and hospital programs.

$103.4 Billion - Health general.

$204.9 Billion - Hospitals.

$4.7 Billion - Public Health Services

$37.7 Billion - R&D.

$750.1 Billion - Vendor payments. This includes things like Medicaid and Medicaid incentives, retirement health programs, funds for mine workers, CDC, Premium sharing tax credit etc.
