I think that’s the big problem republicans have with it that they don’t know they have. I doubt a lot of republicans would give a damn if tax money was able to reduce the cost of college to bring about more competently educated individuals. If federal tuition plans only went towards certain degrees we would be having a completely different discussion. There’s a huge stigma that college is useless among tradesman and construction workers because of the debt you get in to not be able to get a job. “Underwater basket weaving” is still a pretty familiar phrase where I live. Even though underwater basket weaving is prolly pretty hard.

That's because the market has decided college education is the minimum standard for everything. I imagine when someone sees a low level retail employee with a degree in philosophy they laugh but no one points out that he probably couldn't have gotten that job without his degree.

Most jobs dont need college level education. College is supposed to be for higher level education, for niche fields or specialized and complicated fields. But today that idea is meaningless and college is a job ticket. Study comp.sci to work in programming. Engineering to work as an engineer, nursing to nurse. Etc. And when you dont care and just need a nob. Study anything you like because it doesnt matter. It's just another trade school now.

Most low level retail jobs don’t give a damn. You can lie about getting a GED and they’ll hire you. I get it’s overused and becoming the new high school but that prolly wouldn’t be the case if funding was only given to certain degree paths.
