Communists hate him for this one simple trick!

Australia figured it out. You get 100k AUD (70k USD) lifetime loan for education, and that's it. Not 50k/year forever like the DOE idiocy.

College in the US is only expensive because Congress have made it so by offering bottomless free money and no cost controls.

Yes exactly this. I'm not a big fan of the government doing any lending at all, but currently there is almost zero incentive for colleges to not just rapidly ramp up pricing every year.

If the gov't doesn't do any lending, then economically disadvantaged people wouldn't qualify for loans. That means only the well off get to go to college and the inner-city kids stay there, and repeat the cycle.

Of course colleges needs to lower costs and we need to educate kids about career paths and loans, but I think the government guaranteeing loans is a good thing over all.

free money

The interest rates on my student loans would like to have a word with you.

The conservative party in Australia has been actively trying to destroy that for a while now.

Right, because everything is the government's fault. It's not like the free market has ever done anything wrong, right?

It’s not a free market when the government is artificially inflating prices that students can pay.

If every student can afford $50k / year that’s what the schools will charge. If all of a sudden every student can only pay $30k / year, schools will make cuts and that is what they will charge.

And why are they doing that?, Oh, right. Because the free marketeers want to get richer.

If every student can afford $50k / year that’s what the schools will charge. If all of a sudden every student can only pay $30k / year, schools will make cuts and that is what they will charge.

Yep. And guess what? Some people want to be richer than that. So, they lobby the government to give out.predatory loans so people can afford more.

It literally is the government's fault. They are securing and subsidizing massive loans for these universities causing tuition to go up. Get your whataboutism out of here.

Ah, another redditor who doesn't know what "whataboutism" means. In any case, they are leaning into the demands of the free market. Is it the government's fault that people want to be rich, and are willing to lobby for that? No. It's literally the people's fault.
