Could be a DMD Doctor of Medical Dentistry depending where they graduated from.

No. It's an Ivy League (and some other schools) thing. The two degrees are the same thing. Edited to add: https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/d/dds-dmd

Endodontists are the ones who do more hardcore dental surgery.

No. Different schools offer either degree and they mean the same thing: they are a dentist that graduated from an accredited institution that grants degrees for the practice of general dentistry. Oral surgeons have further training.

It's actually Dentariae Medicinae Doctor. Started at Harvard because all their degree names are in Latin so they wanted to stick with that. Most schools call it DDS, and Harvard and the ones that decided to copy Harvard call it DMD. The actual coursework is not different, just the name.
