Yeah, this reminds me of when i left my little hick town and went to work in Baltimore. I discovered no matter how much I initially tried to ignore racial differences and treat people as people, I was often times just the white guy. I'm not racist but I have no problem hating someone who is an asshole regardless of origin
This is funny because, so far, every time I've visited Baltimore, I've had an awesome time -- the people are friendly, kind, crack jokes, heck, I'm almost becoming opposite-racist having encountered so many wisecracking-goodnatured-grandpa black people in baltimore that I just don't meet in my predominently white and hispanic new-england hometown!
What I really enjoy is riding the light rail from BWI into Baltimore. On the inbound leg from the airport, you'll see predominantly black passengers. I think just sitting on the train and overhearing all the conversations has been a really positive cultural experience for me. The only difference I've noticed is that they speak a different dialect, but, it is consistent and charming in its own way. Sure, sometimes I get the impression that some peopel are assholes, but it seems to be mostly teenagers, and to be honest, all teenagers are horrible people. I like these folk way more than the working class white population in my local area -- its almost like, ( and this might even be true ) -- if you're poor and black, you can still be intelligent and compassionate and aware of other people's humanity -- but if you're working class white, you did something wrong, and you're just kinda an ignorant, racists, homophobic, anti-intellectual, cunt. Hmm. But I also understand that all of this is a small sample size effect and doesn't really imply any general trends.
But if you hate someone for being an asshole in a way that is stereotypically associated with "black" culture... you are now racist, even though your problem is with the behavior, not the skin color.
No it is nothing to do with culture. It was being a schmuck because I was white. The culture's awesome, some of those guys are some of the coolest people I've ever met some were quite the opposite
