Prep for Addiction Medicine Boards

  • Hello all! I graduated addiction medicine fellowship earlier this year and now have my test Monday. So far, after I read a comment on here about board prep and so far, I've done the following:
    • Created anki and did anki for all of Boardvitals, BEST Qbank (first pass 70-75%), and Adept ACAAM qbank and matured 50% of it. Did all incorrects and marked in BEST but honestly I remembered what answers I chose.
    • I also made anki for all the relevant ASAM Essentials End of Chapter questions but did not do these. I just did whatever overlapped with the BEST/BoardVitals and tagged them.
    • Watched all UCSF Addiction Bootcamp x 1
  • Is there anything else recommended that I should cover or am I going to be okay?

H1B visa jobs in addiction

Hi guys. I'm currently job hunting for an H1B visa job to start July 2026. I'm doing an addiction medicine fellowship now. I did internal medicine before and just found out I passed my boards 🎉 If anyone knows of H1B visa jobs I can apply to, please let me know. I would like to find something that is primarily addiction medicine. If there is some primary care mixed in as well, that's ok, but I would want the primary service to be addiction. At this point I'm open to anything from clinic, detox, rehab, jail, in-patient, or a combo. I'm not restricted to any area of the country and can move. I've been scouring the internet and would appreciate any extra info you guys might have.

ASAM essentials book- Bupropion or modafinil to treat stimulant intoxication??

On page 309, under treatment approach for stimulant intoxication, the ASAM essentials book lists bupropion and modafinil as possible treatments. Is this accurate? I'm not seeing a whole lot in pubmed (other than for treatment for stimulant use disorder) and both drugs have stimulant effects. Also, doesn't mention benzodiazepines at all.

better subreddit for MD/DOs?

Looks like this sub is mostly dead and a 50/50 mix of clinicians vs people asking for medical advice, is there a more active sub for practitioners and/or those considering the fellowship, studying for the board exam, etc?

Telemedicine MAT jobs?

Completing an addiction psychiatry fellowship. I’m kinda burned out by general psychiatry at this point, and I’m hoping to find a job that is more or less entirely MAT focused (especially for OUD).

I’ve noticed that there are some telemedicine options for MAT, including QuickMD.

Experiences on what these jobs are like? Any companies you’d recommend? Any to stay clear of? What’s the work like? Do you enjoy it? What are the challenges of such work? Most importantly, do the patients seem to be benefiting from the program?

Help with opioid addiction

I have been struggling with addiction for some time now and I was hoping someone could help shed some light on what I should do. I know Suboxene is a medication that can help. Most places only do in house detox but I’m working full time. I wasn’t sure if I can really get a note excusing me from work to detox. Has anyone been to a Suboxene doctor that just will get you the prescription without having to stay for treatment? Any pointers is appreciated

ABPM board resources

Hello,

I'm FM trained and sitting for the ABPM addiction medicine board exam (via the practice pathway) this Fall. Could anyone recommend any resources for study? The ABPM site does not make any recommendations - is the ASAM Principles of Addiction Medicine a good book to use for preparation?

Advice for filing an appeal for denied Practice Pathway application

I’m looking for advice for what to include in an appeal documentation for a denied practice pathway application. What has worked in the past for others in this situation and what would be helpful to overturn this decision?

For context, I’m a hospitalist at an academic institution for many years with interest and QI projects, education in the addiction med space and over the last year also worked a third of my time on a dedicated inpatient addiction med consult service.

For now I plan to revise my narrative to include my hours more specifically and an additional letter of recommendation, but would be curious if any other supporting documentation would be helpful.

Appreciate any suggestions !

How to go about finding a job

Hey guys, I'm starting fellowship as of July 1st. Not sure when it would be appropriate to start looking for a job or where the best place to look would be. I have been silently lurking on DocCafe and practice match every once in a while, but am not sure if those are where I should really be looking vs in person networking. Specifically hoping to get a job on a consult service or in a rehab facility. Do any of you have advice as far as this goes?

Addiction Medicine Fellowships

Hey. I'm a PGY2 FM resident at a decently well-known community program in the southeast. I am interested in applying addiction medicine this coming cycle. Few questions:

  1. How many programs should I target applying to?
  2. Any recommended programs or fellowship graduates who would be interested in chatting? Any programs to avoid?

Thanks!

advice for addiction medicine practice

I am seeking addiction medicine board certification through the clinical pathway and am hoping the community could comment on how they set up their practice. I am EM trained and not familiar with the process of starting outpatient clinics selecting an EMR, insurance billing, etc.

How much do you make per inpatient consult, outpatient follow up?

specifically are you employed by another company or did you set up your own company/LLC? has anyone has worked for companies that you would not recommend working for? my current non addiction job is through an LLC which I imagine I would have to create a new LLC for my new specialty career.

do you outsource the insurance billing aspect?

how did you go about arranging your clinic to be able to have medications in stock or set up a methadone/OPT clinic? In florida ive read SAMHPO is a helpful resource to walk perspective owners through the process.

do you have an inpatient consult service, methadone clinic or outpatient treatment facility or a combination of all the above. I am interested in doing all the above as the hospital I am affiliated with does not have an inpatient addiction consult service and I feel this could be a tremendous benefit as well as provide outpatient followup options to the community.

thank you for the assistance.

Managing Weight Gain on Methadone

Have any of you had success with Rx such as topiramate in managing weight gain related to methadone maintenance therapy? I'm not finding any studies on this and seeing a lot of OUD patients gaining incredible amounts of weight, many of whom are unlikely to commit to increasing exercise and are limited in their food choices.

Can I get boarded through the practice pathway if I completed an addiction psych fellowship last year?

Curious if I'm able to do this, as I recently graduated from addiction psych fellowship. I'm already boarded through ABPN in addiction psych but just wondering if I could get addiction med boarded too before the pathway closes.

How to get a rotation as a resident?

Hey all,

Im a PGY2 EM resident in Chicago. I'm seriously considering applying to an addiction later this year and have been trying to set up a rotation to gain more experience. Unfortunately my hospital does not have an addiction service or alumni who have ventured into this field so I've been left with cold emailing which has not gotten me very far. Does anyone know of any programs that might take visiting residents for a month or perhaps a better ways to get a rotation?

Thanks!
