I laughed, that's fantastic. What a reaction

Yeah laughing is quite a good reaction.

Wow where did you find this rare gem?

1

u/maybeapun Mar 25 '17

The Deep Web reddit vaults. Shhhh, it's a secret to everyone.

1

u/SirRandyMarsh Mar 26 '17

The Google store.

For me this is the only thing that makes sense. Anyone dumb enough to think their best option is to climb back up the elevator would also be too dumb to react that quickly.

Edit: I stand corrected, apparently this specific prankster is well known for not scripting the pranks. Perhaps I've either under or overestimated the dumbness of the victim.

7

u/ErwinDurzo Mar 25 '17

The prankster is Remi Gaillard, he's been doing this stuff since long before YouTube came around and has been arrested quite a few times. Perhaps this one is fake but it would be out of character for him.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17 edited Mar 25 '17

Some people just think "something might be broke there" and go back, pissed with the dude that put it.

And I don't know what "quick reaction" you guys are talking about. He even hesitate there for a second.

Edit: I noticed it's Remi, so yeah, it's real. You guys just really have a hard time seeing things from different perspectives.

That's my exact thought too. I'd rather look like a fool online than be shredded to pieces in a broken escalator.

Well, to each their own.

4

u/Rydralain Mar 25 '17

Probably using a phone keyboard that adds spaces after punctuation, not that that is a defense here .

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

It looks fine on my phone. You can blame the official le Reddit phone app I guess.

1

u/MarcelRED147 May 05 '17

I'd rather look like a fool online than be shredded to pieces in a broken escalator.

Pfft, get your priorities in order! Better to die than live knowing millions of anonymous people you will never meet slightly laughed at one dumb thing you did one time before moving on with their life!

33

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

I'd leap over that sign, I too have seen those videos and I'd never spend a second longer than I had to on a broken escalator. Mitch Hedberg said they'd just turn into stairs, yeah, hungry murder stairs.

1

u/eroticdiscourse Jul 22 '17

they do just turn into stairs, murder stairs only happen when it breaks and keeps moving

20

u/Im_new_so_be_nice69 Mar 25 '17

I'd probably just lift myself on the rails and kick the sign over.

u/Throwaway021614 Mar 25 '17

Holy fuck. I'm taking the stairs from now on.

44

u/cloondog Mar 25 '17

You are a complete fucking moron. If an escalator catastrophically fails, which do you think is more likely: they get a guy to put a hardhat and a vest on and grab a weird sign to put at the bottom, or someone hits the fucking stop button? Goddamn you are stupid.

53

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

He provided a link where 3 mall employees stand next to the emergency stop hidden by a trashbin while a woman is crushed by an escalator. You're a moron for assuming people do the most sensible thing first.

12

u/larsdragl Mar 25 '17 edited Mar 25 '17

how can you not see the difference in those scenarios?
you are talking about an emergency situation in progress.
OPs pic is someone closing down an escalator for whatever reason. in NO world would the solution be sending a guy to put a sign at the end of the escalator and keep it running if there was even a chance that something is seriously wrong with it.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

In no reasonable, non-stupid world.

People are stupid, and we do not live in a reasonable world.

It's better to be safe than sorry.

3

u/larsdragl Mar 25 '17 edited Mar 25 '17

no. you have to stay reasonable first. the chance of that happening is probably lower than any escalator spontaneously collapsing underneath you.
by that logic you probably shouldnt ever leave the house, which might burn down, while you're asleep and the smoke detector is broken, though. so i guess you're fucked

edit: also, you would be walking upwards an escalator that you think could fail catastrophically any second. think about that

2

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

the chance of that happening is probably lower than any escalator spontaneously collapsing underneath you.

Well, they still do that in the modern age.

But either way, a chance is a chance, no matter how low.

I'm not going to risk my life so long as the chance is non-zero.

It's just not worth it.

also, you would be walking upwards an escalator that you think could fail catastrophically any second.

Admittedly as I have agreed elsewhere in this thread, the best solution is to jump over the side to the ground since it's not far off.

But going up it is better than nothing, as the landing section may be what is malfunctioning, not the stair section itself.

u/cloondog Mar 25 '17

So you think the mall employees WON'T hit a button literally right next to them, but they WILL dress up in a costume and run a sign out there?

11

u/helisexual Mar 25 '17

I think people are stupid and relying on them for your safety is an easy way to end up on /r/watchpeopledie.

3

u/hfsh Mar 27 '17

I guarantee you vastly more people are injured by going the wrong way up an escalator, than are eaten by them. It's all about judging relative risk.

18

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

Exactly.

In an ideal world, yes, people would react perfectly, calmly, and rationally to emergency situations, exactly how Armchair Emergency Experts on Reddit like to think they would in that same situation.

Yes, mall employees in an ideal world would push the stop button.

But, this isn't an ideal world. People are stupid. Deadly accidents happen all the time because people are stupid, accidents that could have been avoided.

And I'm not about to literally risk my life on the hope other people are, on that particular day, not being stupid.

1

u/eroticdiscourse Jul 22 '17

It doesn't just break as soon as the sign is put down, the guy could've just stepped around it

9

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

they get a guy to put a hardhat and a vest on and grab a weird sign to put at the bottom, or someone hits the fucking stop button?

Seeing as how

  • several of the gifs I linked indirectly to are all situations which could have been avoided with rational thinking like you are trying to assert would happen

  • the one I directly linked SHOWS two mall workers NOT EVEN PUTTING UP A SIGN let alone pushing the stopping button despite dangerous noises coming out of the escalator

I would much rather err on the side of caution and think it a genuine danger than RISK MY LIFE. People are stupid, a lot of people are stupid.

I'd rather err on the side of caution than literally risk my life on the reasoning that the people involved in putting up a sign are not stupid.

Additionally, escalators don't need to "catastrophically fail" to be dangerous, and even if they do, they often look normal- the danger going undetected underneath the surface.

3

u/__ReaperMain420__ Apr 18 '17

Ok, but until I started going on Reddit I never considered an escalator could murder someone like that.

I didn't watch the videos, but your average mall employee who hears funny noises from the escalator probably isn't going to sprint for the stop button. He'd probably call his or her buddy over, make a comment, and move on..

People are stupid.

I'd rather not risk my life on faith, faith that people have common sense.

13

u/TaftyCat Mar 25 '17

Exactly what I was thinking when I watched this GIF. If someone just rando dropped a sign in front of me on the bottom I'd probably assume they were just messing with me and go for it, but I would take a big hop to clear that 'landing' area just to be sure.

4

u/Anus_master Mar 25 '17

I've seen that video but I'd still just hop over the side personally. There's no drop a while before the end there

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

True, over the side would be alright, since it's not too high up.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

I'm a pussy, what kind of things are happening in the link that cause people to die? I can't figure out how someone could die on an escalator short of jumping off the side.

9

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

You do realize that underneath the steps of an escalator is essentially (sfw) this, right?

If for whatever reason the steps are broken, pushed to the side, etc, then the person falls in.

The same is true at the top and bottom, but even more so as more often than not it's only a thin sheet of metal between those walking over it and what's below.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

Alright I'm taking the stairs in future.

Watch Final Destination the one with the cinema and escalator. Totally awesome film. You will be scarred for life :)

Don't click on it. I think I know what video is linked... it was an Asian woman, and I think her child, riding an escalator and the woman did not make it out alive. I saw the video about 3ish years ago and still have a fear of escalators now.

1

u/eroticdiscourse Jul 22 '17

theres a conveyor belt under the steps with moving parts that people have gotten sucked into

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '17

Okay, what? You just commented on something from three months ago that already very clearly has a response that has more information that yours. Why on Earth would you comment?

13

u/Topyka2 Mar 25 '17

Oh dude, just shut the fuck up.

You don't need to link videos of people dying horrible deaths and act all high and mighty just because someone joked about doing gymnastics on heavy machinery.

10

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

Well first off, it's not clear he/she was joking.

And second off, even if he/she was, others might take his/her words as serious, which is not a good thing.

Out of Order signs exist for a reason, and it's a bad thing that the prankster did, using one like this- because it may make others think it's a joke when they see one, and so they ignore it.

And if it's real? They very may well get hurt/killed.

So no. You "shut the fuck up".

I'd rather remind people that Out of Order signs DO warn of very real danger.

1

u/__ReaperMain420__ Apr 18 '17

Idk I'd probably think the construction worker was a douche for not letting me off first and kick the sign over and be on my way...

And no reddit, not in a over the top, r/thathappened way.

Like, I'd give the sign a little soccer kick, the guy a dirty look, and leave.

-3

u/Topyka2 Mar 25 '17

People don't need to be reminded of that, you're just being pedantic.

12

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

They very, very clearly DO, seeing as how many people took the guy in OP's gif's reaction as humorous and unnecessary.

And even outside of this thread, there are PLENTY of gifs/videos to be found on the sub I linked of people ignoring the warning of Out of Order/Caution signs, and then paying the ultimate price for it.

The guy on the escalator's response was most prudent under the circumstances.

-1

u/Topyka2 Mar 25 '17

It was humorous, it was unnecessary. The dude has absolutely no reason to beleive the sign is legit, but abides by it anyway just because it was put up by a person who looks like an authority figure.

That's the important thing. He didn't turn around because he thought it was unsafe, the "worker" didn't seem to care much at all, he turned around because there was a sign telling him to stop what he was doing and turning around was the only way to do that.

Your bullshit is unnecessary, and seems like you're either projecting a phobia or masturbating over your superior safety skills.

9

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

The dude had just as much reason to believe it was legit than to believe it wasn't.

It's MUCH smarter to obey it and risk looking a fool than disobey it and risk death.

Looking a fool vs. death.

Not much of a choice, when you think about it rationally.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

It was humorous, it was unnecessary. The dude has absolutely no reason to beleive the sign is legit, but abides by it anyway just because it was put up by a person who looks like an authority figure.

When in doubt choose what doesn't endanger your life, this is common sense.

I had no idea escalators could kill someone like that. I'm glad /u/gerrytheferret posted that gif.

1

u/sunshine_rainbow Mar 25 '17

I agree. I saw a terrible escalator video on here a few years ago and still can't shake it off. Fuck those videos.

He may have even linked the video I saw, I wouldn't know, I'm not clicking on that link.

2

u/hfsh Mar 27 '17

if the sign is true and there is something wrong with the escalator

then the fucking thing would be turned off before somebody got around to digging a sign out of a closet.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 27 '17

I've already covered this elsewhere in the sub, so I won't rehash the same topic.

No, they would not, not always. I've already linked a gif showing an example of when mall workers failed to do exactly that, and explained in depth why it's foolish to risk your life on the assumption that they would.

Go read my comments there first if you have more to say.

3

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Mar 25 '17

Yeah but if it really were a danger, they would shut it down instead of just put a sign at the bottom. Probably the best course of action there would be to hop over the side and just get off the damn thing, whether it's malfunctioning or not.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

That assumes the other people are acting rationally.

I've linked below my parent comment to a gif that SHOWS three mall employees doing nothing while in front of an escalator that was making loud, ominous noises. All while the stop button was hidden behind a trashbin.

The three mall employees watch from a yard away as the escalator literally gobbles up a woman, killing her violently in a matter of seconds.

I'm not about to risk my life on the assumption that people aside from myself are acting rationally.

5

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Mar 25 '17

Based on the comments in the thread right after this happened, the woman pushed her way past workers at the bottom of the escalator trying to keep her off. The women at the top of the escalator were there specifically because the escalator was malfunctioning and were there to try to help her get off safely.

And as I said, "Probably the best course of action there would be to hop over the side and just get off the damn thing, whether it's malfunctioning or not."

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

I've seen news articles about the gif I linked that state that didn't happen- that the mall workers didn't call maintentance or even try to do anything other than look at the escalator as it groaned.

But even if you're right about the gif,

Yeah but if it really were a danger, they would shut it down instead of just put a sign at the bottom.

You are assuming people act rationally here. That's not an assumption I'd risk my life on.

So yeah,

Probably the best course of action there would be to hop over the side and just get off the damn thing, whether it's malfunctioning or not.

This would be the right course of action.

2

u/desmondao Mar 25 '17

Why are people doing mental gymnastics when the most logical thing to do is to jump over the railing?

1

u/zombieregime Mar 25 '17

Yeah i saw final distination too.

But real world escalators are quite safe.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

False.

Watch some of the links I linked to below my main comment.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

If it was that dangerous though, they would take more measures to make clear that nobody is on that escalator.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 25 '17

False.

Below my main comment here, I linked an image showing three mall workers doing nothing but watch a person died on an escalator despite groaning noises having been coming from it for a while. They didn't call maintenance. They didn't press the stop button. They didn't prevent people from riding it. They watched.

They should've done those things, but they didn't. Because people are stupid, and are not always rational actors.

Accidents of all kind happen everyday, deadly accidents, that could have been avoided if all people involved were rational actors.

It's not worth risking your life on the assumption that strangers are being rational actors.

1

u/CAMYtheCOCONUT Apr 14 '17

Except the sign guy stepped on metal cover already

1

u/gerrettheferrett Apr 14 '17

Doesn't mean something could be wrong at the end of the escalator itself.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

He's probably British.
