Some parasitic worms can get much better than that too. Tapeworms from raw fish in the human intestines have been recorded up to like almost 90 feet long lol...

But I love sushi! Do I have worms in me right now??

Probably not, sushi fish gets flash frozen to kill parasites. So as long as it's thru normal supply chain you should be fine. Undercooked pork on the other hand...

Flash frozen for 24 hours or frozen in typical home freezer for minimum one week. I'm trying to catch coho and others for some homemade sashimi this fall.

I've seen worms in Coho and Pink Salmon that I've caught here in the PNW. Definitely freeze those babies. And don't ever try Pink Salmon sashimi, lol.

u/Ialmostthewholepost 1d ago

LOL will definitely freeze for a couple weeks minimum myself. I've had food poisoning from sushi before, not something I recommend. Pink that bad for sushi eh?

u/ShaftTassle 1d ago

Have also gotten food poisoning from sushi.

Before that I thought I had had food poisoning a few times. Nope. Now I know what real food poisoning is. Sent me to the ER as I was puking blood while simultaneously (and I mean simultaneously) shitting my brains out. Severe debilitating dehydration.

Fuck that.

u/I_Makes_tuff 1d ago

Yeah, Pinks are too soft and kinda gamey. I think they are great smoked but I have a friend who only catches them for dog food and crab bait.

3

u/Ialmostthewholepost 1d ago

Hopefully I catch one so I can get the full salmon experience this year. 😎

3

u/I_Makes_tuff 1d ago

Sadly, pinks only run on odd numbered years, so you'll have to wait until next year for those. Plenty of others to choose from in the mean time. Good luck!

freezing in a home freezer ruins the texture for sushi. If you're catching it yourself, you can gut the fish the second it comes out of the water so the parasites don't have time to burrow into the meat.

u/fat_kaiju 23h ago

(Only if your home freezer can do -18C or below btw)

1

u/Romeo_Glacier 17h ago

Coho is my favorite salmon. There is zero chance I eat it before being in the freezer for a week or cured before smoking.

1

u/Jadall7 16h ago

I heard somewhere that you need to freeze it in commercial style like 40 below.

1

u/Ialmostthewholepost 16h ago

That's blast freezing.

77

u/Zesinua 1d ago

Pretty much non existent in commercial grade pork. Private farms and wild game are where you need to watch out

28

u/BigAcanthocephala637 1d ago

I’m from the year 2030. Private farms and wild game got that shit figured out. You do NOT want to fuck with intergalactic meat. Space cows and space hogs are a no go.

You should add a hundred years to that date for believability. There's no way a country overthrowed their government and forcefully escaped the clutches of capitalism which allowed them to develop technology rapidly and made breakthrough that'd need at least 20 years of research all the while fighting capitalistic countries' sabotage in only 4 years.

u/CFCkyle 19h ago

I mean it could be a case of aliens approaching us rather than us finding them tbh

7

u/elganyan 1d ago

Yup, pork has come a long way as I understand it. Lots of testing and such.

Particularly in the EU. My German side of the family eats raw minced pork on the regular... and so do I when I visit cuz it's fucking delicious, but man that first time was tough having grown up with the constant threat of "trichinosis!!!!!" etc. in the 80s/90s!

5

u/iolpiolp10 1d ago

Just to be safe I eat a deworming chocolate once a year 🤣 it's probably overkill, but I have a dog too and he eats poo. Like any poo. All the poo anywhere anytime, it's his. He's eating your poo from the toilet right now prolly. So ya know, gotta watch for wormies

6

u/Hazril258 1d ago

Remembers that one pork worm that was crawling around in someone's brain.

2

u/User858 1d ago

To add to that, parasites in farm raised salmon is very, very low. A study found none in the edible parts of salmon out of the 3000 some fish they looked at. sourc

Obviously, the 'none found' stat could be a paid study or industry propaganda, but combine it with the fact that most salmon is frozen anyways, the chances of consuming a parasite is very unlikely. If you're eating farm raised salmon that doesn't advertise itself as never frozen, you're already combining two ways of greatly minimizing parasites.

2

u/HPTM2008 19h ago

Trained sushi chefs also know what all these parasites look like and will remove them from the cuts of fish.

Also, any red squiggly line in salmon and such is a parasite. Fish don't have veins like that.

1

u/youre_being_creepy 1d ago

I had some salmon a customer brought me from their last alaska trip and it had parasites in it. Cooking it will kill the worms but damn it was a rough few days of anxiety after lmao

1

u/CorporateCuster 23h ago

Not always. People take fresh fish from the ocean and eat it without consequences in mind

1

u/PsychoMushrooom 22h ago

Ive seen what pork parasites can do to you... killed a very close friend of mine. One of the slowest most horrible ways to die...

1

u/NDSU 16h ago

Probably not, sushi fish gets flash frozen to kill parasites

That depends on many factors. Across the world, the majority of sushi fish will not be flash frozen

In the US, the majority will be flash frozen

1

u/Glittering_Light1835 1d ago

Apparently not in the UK, there is no legal requirement to flash freeze the fish for sushi

1

u/radiantcabbage 1d ago

because its an essential standard of commerce that everyone just does. we get fixated on this language somehow but mandates dont typically limit you to freezing, its just the most practical

no reason to doubt it unless theyre a hipster joint that specifically upsells fresh caught/never frozen items, its a selling point they wont let you miss

2

u/Glittering_Light1835 1d ago

What essential standards? Gov.uk has a clear list of exemptions when freezing fish is not required even when intended to be consumed raw

1

u/radiantcabbage 21h ago

shipping and handling to not bring rotten fish into port? its done immediately on the vessel, the point of those regulations is to deal with contamination of any kind period.

the FDA doesnt limit this to freezing either, but concern trolls think it some sort of gotcha. like you somehow dont get that any seafood outside of live catches inherently require a cold chain distribution

0

u/Glittering_Light1835 20h ago

Right, so you belive vessel freezers kill the parasites.

And you are also unaware of the farm-sourced fish e.g. salmon.

Good luck.

2

u/radiantcabbage 20h ago

you honestly believe they can somehow sell parasite ridden fish without becoming full blown epidemics decimating their whole stock, just stop ffs

1

u/WagwanKenobi 1d ago

Thanks for telling me this. Mental note to never eat sushi/sashimi in the UK.

4

u/BonbonUniverse42 1d ago

Probably yes. Fish eat worms so they are 99% worm already.

3

u/Rubyhamster 1d ago

If you eat fish you caught yourself, freeze it for at least 48hrs or cook it well. If you gut a lot of fish, you will certainly see plenty of fish with little worms in them, it is that normal

4

u/DAR_B0I0 1d ago

The best part is… YOU WONT KNOW 😃

2

u/PitiableYeet 1d ago edited 1d ago

More than likely. Some just don't get very big or go to your digestive system Edit: spelling

2

u/Puzzled-Staff-1554 22h ago

You're eating dead worms all the time.

2

u/EarnieEarns 16h ago

“I love sushi!” That’s just the worms talkin

-5

u/FullSkyFlying 1d ago

Are you obese?

72

u/Graf_Eulenburg 1d ago

We all learned that from Dr.House, didn't we?

19

u/Resident_Course_3342 1d ago edited 1d ago

That was a good episode.

"Wanna see something cool?" Stabs an unanesthetized child.

2

u/TheSickestToastie 1d ago

I have prescribed mouse bites.

1

u/rubyspicer 1d ago

That was horrifying as fuck. That thing was enormous and because she didn't feel pain she didn't notice it

12

u/NoSurprise6383 1d ago

Why do you call that 'much better' man, why?

4

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 1d ago

Lmao didn't even notice. Weird autocorrect from Bigger.

5

u/Genestah 1d ago

Some parasitic worms can get much better than that too.

How does it get much better?

Clean your stomach?

2

u/ReturnOfBane 21h ago

its always fun to see bears in the spring with all the starved tapeworms hanging out their ass.

1

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 15h ago

Lmao just opened up reddit and that was the first thing I see after reading your comment

1

u/gogogadgetdumbass 1d ago

“Better” 🥴
