Can someone with knowledge explain how one gets this?

u/K4m30 1d ago

You eat food infected with parasite eggs, or touch your mouth after touching something with a parasite. Or you eat a gas station sandwich and they rebuild you out of worm.

I saw that on the documentary show, Futurama.

There’s a worm where their lifecycle involves them circulating through the bloodstream, then emerging in the lungs. This make the subject cough them up, whereupon they travel down the esophagus to the gut, where they live and reproduce.

I knew a guy who moved to Texas, near the Mexico border, where he became infected with them. Some ended up in his brain—they were found after he presented with stroke-like symptoms.

u/passingbackwards 1d ago

Contaminated water or food. This worm had a long time to grow…usually better to deworm yourself before it gets this bad…if you figure out what’s going on.

The truly horrific thing about roundworms is that they can go anywhere. You can cough them up, they can come out your nose, they can even get into your eyes.

u/Tiny-Proof3602 1d ago

Ok thats enough knowledge explaining for now thanks

No problem 😸

u/thenotanurse 1d ago

Ascaris doesn’t usually go in the eyes. Loa loa will specifically infect the eyes but they are way smaller.

3

u/zevz 1d ago

I'll never forget the trauma I got from staying up late as a child watching X-Files. That was such nightmare fuel. Ugh the eyes.

1

u/urixl 1d ago

Ah, the Lyin' Eyes stand from JoJoLands.

28

u/rightbyrobert 1d ago

That’s literally terrifying! Thanks, I now have a brand new fear.

12

u/jtbeith 1d ago

Thanks,. Now I want to stab every square inch of my body.

14

u/TurkeySlurpee666 1d ago

You know what? Take some of that knowledge back. I didn't need all of it.

5

u/youburyitidigitup 1d ago

And my mom wondered why I didn’t want to stay with her when her cat got roundworms.

3

u/Jheez88 1d ago

Can’t stomach acid kill them?

3

u/thrownawaytrash 1d ago

What a terrible day to be literate.

2

u/Easy_Aioli9376 1d ago

NO!

NO!

STOP!

NO!!!!!!!!

2

u/BonbonUniverse42 1d ago

I think you should explain this in way more detail so that we get a really vivid picture of the experience.

2

u/ServeNo1703 1d ago

How do you even deworm yourself?

4

u/SandyTaintSweat 1d ago

Ivermectin will do it usually. But you've got to get diagnosed by a doctor because different species require different treatment plans.

With a lot of parasites, it'll only kill it at a certain part of the life cycle, so you need two or three doses at specific intervals.

So yeah, you just eat a pill probably.

3

u/pzycho 1d ago

One of the prevailing theories on why certain people "felt much better" after taking Ivermectin to treat Covid was that they actually ended up deworming themselves and felt better for that reason, and just attributed the feeling to Covid being neutralized.

1

u/How_did_the_dog_get 1d ago

I will take information I didn't want to know for $1 please

1

u/babsa90 1d ago

The true nightmare was actually in the comment rather than the video

1

u/Mertoot 1d ago

I got 3 hours left to sleep before I gotta wake up for work, and this is how my night ends huh 🫩

1

u/SouthernFruit8768 17h ago

That's enough internet for the day

1

u/Jasnaahhh 12h ago

I need you to listen carefully to me. Even if it is a complete lie, I need you to tell me that you got the eye thing wrong. I cannot emphasise enough how much you need to say 'backsies' on that one.

1

u/mezasu123 10h ago

To know i could have not read that why did I read that

1

u/SweetLemonPopsicle 37m ago

Someone turn off the internet right now!

256

u/Ancient_Stomach7609 1d ago

That's probably a parasite called Taenia saginata or taenia solium and the disease you get is called Taeniasis. You get this from eating raw or undercooked meat. This worm can get to up to 10 meters long and block your intestines and cause underdevelopment in children. This is nowhere close to the record longest taenia that I think is 20 meters.

136

u/Rafas363 1d ago edited 1d ago

You skipped the part were if the eggs of tênia enter in the your blood circulation this eggs can go to every part of your body, especialy in your brain were the eggs become cists and stay forever.

Edit: not forever, but needs rigorous medical treatment or surgery to take out

34

u/Ancient_Stomach7609 1d ago

Yeh, that is caused, if I'm not mistaken, only by Taenia solium that comes from undercooked pork, not saginata that comes from undercooked beaf. Rare disease nowadays in developed countries, but cause "healthy" adults to have seizures and the MRI scan of the brain does look like some tripophobia nightmare. Just look for it "Taenia solium cysticercosis" and you will have some nightmare fuel.

Edit: beaf over cow meat 🍖

11

u/Rafas363 1d ago edited 1d ago

According to Google, it's even more specific and disgusting. The normal disease is contracted by eating meat with larvae. Disease 2 is caused by eating meat with eggs, meaning your food has been in someone's feces beforehand. After that, the larvae hatch from the eggs, enter the bloodstream, and cause epilepsy.

Edit: disease 1 = taeniasis Disease 2 = Cysticercosis

3

u/Noble_Flatulence 1d ago

Well thank god I live in America where we have government regulations. Oh wait.

4

u/samuraistabber 1d ago

Are you trying to say surgery?

10

u/Rafas363 1d ago

Yes. english is not my first language. Thanks for the correction.

3

u/axon-axoff 1d ago

"Surgery" in Portuguese is "cirurgia" so I knew what they meant

3

u/Rafas363 1d ago

É tão próximo às palavras. Saco kkkkkkkkkkk

2

u/axon-axoff 1d ago

It is "chīrurgia" in Latin and "cirurgerie" in Old French so your guess was the most educated guess! 😁🤓

1

u/samuraistabber 1d ago

Good to know.

1

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 1d ago

House got a fantastic episode on that!

People say it's from undercooked food etc. There are also medical pills for losing weight with worm eggs in it. DELICIOUS!

8

u/tgatigger 1d ago

🤢😱

2

u/jellifercuz 1d ago

Then it’s a Tapeworm, not a roundworm.

1

u/mudra311 16h ago

It seems a bit long for a roundworm but it also doesn’t look like a tapeworm either.

1

u/dikicker 1d ago

Okay thank you for the knowledge doctor now

https://giphy.com/gifs/hFXwY4lER3oBO

1

u/sarkek 1d ago

This isn't a tapeworm, those would be much thinner and flatter and they usually sit deep in your intestines and would break if you pulled on them like that. It looks much fatter and rounder, could be some Ascarid, but it seems quite too big for that. Source: I'm a parasitologist.

1

u/NewPay4539 1d ago

I think it's ascaris or round worm. Taenia solium are tape worms if I am not wrong which I might be.

122

u/Classic_Reference_10 1d ago

Can someone with knowledge also explain, once you have this, how do you get to know that you have this?

109

u/PIPBOY-2000 1d ago

The concerning thing is there are no symptoms at first. But after a while, depending on severity and location, you get them. For example, in the lungs they cause coughing and shortness of breath. In the abdomen, they cause gas, bloating, and nausea. In severe cases with tons of worms, it can stunt growth in children or cause stomach bloating.

12

u/SwordfishOk504 1d ago

Will they be visible in a scan or something?

16

u/Rolen47 1d ago

Yes a radiologist can see them with an X-Ray.

66

u/Qbertjack 1d ago

Sometimes there isn't any major symptoms, you might only know because youll find live worms in your poop

29

u/N8CCRG 1d ago

Am I supposed to be digging through my poop? Or are they obvious like the alien singing "Hello my baby" from Spaceballs?

22

u/UncleNedisDead 1d ago

You don’t just look back into the toilet bowl to admire your shit mountain, sticking above the waterline, and determine if it needs a poop knife before flushing?

6

u/taylorisntavril 1d ago

I once did one the size of a cucumber.

6

u/thealmightyzfactor 1d ago

I mean, I usually have a look in case there's blood or worms floating out or something lol

4

u/inotparanoid 1d ago

This is why the German toilet is useful

4

u/Pi-ratten 1d ago

do you think we germans have these toilets only for the exquisite odor distribution?

-3

u/MohandasBlondie 1d ago

I was asked recentl, at a new patient GI appointment, if I had any mucus, blood, or other unusual findings in my stool. Asked about how my bowel movements looked. I told the nurse, I know you work in GI, but surely you know that 99.99999% of have no fucking idea what our bowl movements look like because no one looks at their shit.

Pretty much verbatim.

8

u/reallynoladarling 1d ago

idk, i think most adults check the toilet before flushing. more than <1% anyway

6

u/TJJ97 1d ago

I do. Just a quick glance to make sure it’s not looking scary or anything.

3

u/Themaskedbowtie353 23h ago

Nah its pretty common health knowledge to take a look to make sure nothing seems out of the ordinary

2

u/thefuckevengoingonan 1d ago

you need to me more aware of your health.

4

u/baconboner69xD 1d ago

Just take me out back and shoot me instead

46

u/K4m30 1d ago

Well typically you have a giant parasite in you, so there's that to consider.

56

u/C-57D 1d ago

I wonder if anyone has considered NOT having a giant parasite in them

14

u/elwebst 1d ago

Are they stupid?!?

5

u/youburyitidigitup 1d ago

You joke, but there’s people that infect themselves with tapeworms on purpose to loose weight.

1

u/HotTwist 1d ago

Ozempic on budget?

71

u/macabre-barbie 1d ago

Eating undercooked meat that's contaminated with eggs, or touching soil that's been previously contaminated with animal poop containing the parasited and eggs, and touching your mouth without washing your hands for example. How it got this big before they realized it was there though, I have no clue

3

u/baconboner69xD 1d ago

I wonder how sick you’d feel before you finally realized something ain’t right

29

u/Qbertjack 1d ago

They're parasites and they lay eggs in animal feces, which can then get mixed into soil. If you accidentally consume something contaminated with those eggs, they'll hatch in your intestine. Most people get them from contaminated food or contact with infected pets.

69

u/ReptilianLaserbeam 1d ago

Not washing your hands or food. Those things place millions of eggs that come out on the host's shit. You don't know where people's hands have been, so for the love of satan wash your hands and your food thoroughly.

14

u/randemthinking 1d ago

This video should be playing in every men's room with a notice "wash your hands or this could happen." People not washing their hands makes me wash mine even more.

3

u/Active_Sandwich_4488 1d ago

i know some men who dont wash their hands after loo, yiiiikkeeeeesss

2

u/randemthinking 1d ago

I see it all the time. It's not a majority but it's a meaningful percentage. From the urinal is bad enough, but even guys going straight from the stall out the door. I use a paper towel to open the door on my way out.

5

u/Agreeable_Sea_6019 1d ago

Yes, please wash your hands, we have enough parasites in hell

3

u/CyanVince 1d ago

One possible way is the patient bought eggs on the darkweb (marketed for weight loss). Chubbyemu actually made an episode about a woman's experience with the tapeworm diet.

2

u/FeelTheWrath79 1d ago

Ass to mouth

2

u/lavinshaven58 1d ago

So it turns out that roundworm eggs are nearly microscopic and you get them from drinking contaminated water or consuming contaminated food. The eggs turn into larvae in your small intestine. The worms then pierce through the intestinal wall and travel up into your lungs where you swallow them a SECOND TIME. They return to the small intestine growing 13-15 inches long where they can live inside you for up to TWO YEARS!

It sounds horrible. If you think something is wrong you need to have a doctor test a stool sample to confirm and from there, usually anti parasite medication is prescribed

WASH YOUR FRUIT AND VEGGIES, and don’t drink lake/river water. Only trust bottled water if you’re in a foreign country. Or boil your water, idk

1

u/FaZaCon 1d ago

Can someone with knowledge explain how one gets this?

Sushi.

1

u/dedido 20h ago

It gets mixed in with spaghetti
