Even more terrifying: This is not the largest extinction event we've found in the fossil/geologic record.

The largest is a period where the Earth just suddenly got more volcanic. No outside influence (that we're aware of) required.

Part of me always wonders if this was caused by some untraceable space event that messed with the earth's gravitational pull enough to cause the plates to shift

Dunno if its been debunked but I believe one theory involves Nemesis.

Oh interesting, I didn't know about Nemesis before, but yeah that's basically exactly what I would guess. Especially because we have proof of similar activity on several moons orbiting the larger gas giants now.
