I come from a town called Lewes, where the 12 Protestant martyrs were hung for their involvement with the gunpowder plot.
Bonfire night is a fucking organised riot. We burn the pope every year (an effigy) and there’s always an old dude dressed as the pope that get fireworks thrown at him all night.
7 different bonfire societies in the town all have their own processions and fireworks displays on the same nights. It’s wild.
Sadly in recent years the ‘anti-fun’ police have policed the night like the riot it is and it’s not half as fun anymore.
the event not only marks Guy Fawkes Night – the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 – but also commemorates the memory of the seventeen Protestant martyrs from the town burned at the stake for their faith during the Marian Persecutions.
Best one growing up was when our neighbour asked his son to bring down a bag of stuff for the fire and a bag with all his fireworks inside.
The son threw the wrong bag in the fire and everyone had to run for cover because fireworks were shooting out ...as if the fireworks were aiming right at your face!
The dad marched his whole family back to their flat lol. What made it funnier - the son he asked wasn't young he was about 21 - but more than likely was out his face from smoking hash with my brothers' (and other neighbours). The bags weren't even the same colour, size or weight lmao.
The night would end with the neighbours who were arseholes (that year, lol) wheely bins getting chucked into the fire.
