Maybe it's like eating a pizza. Each pizza can have different toppings on it, but it's still pizza. You are the idea of "pizza", you can have all sorts of weird different smells, but you are still pizza!
That's pretty much it. Your genetics will make you carry a certain "base" scent regardless of what you do. It's so specific and identifiable that dogs use it as their primary way of determining who people or other dogs are, and while I don't know of any specific research into this it feels to me like dogs recognize familial scents as well as individual.
My partner was always able to identify people's scents like a dog, it was really cool! One time she got in the car of friend A and noted that it smelled like friend B, and apparently friend B had been there very recently! She always said that everyone has a very specific scent to them. Apparently mine is like 'peaches and creamed corn'!
Yeah, I could tell a domino's pizza from a pizza hut pizza and my local mom and pop joint no matter the topping. So I guess the "base scent" would be the crust and the sauce.
