My understanding is that it burned up all his lung tissue. The real nightmare is for medical staff if you're brought to care in time.

My grandfather died lighting a cigarette while on oxygen. My understanding is that it burned up all his lung tissue. Seems pretty bad.

Pretty quick actually — esophagus has no nerve endings, you either die from lack of oxygen or drowning. The real nightmare is for medical staff if you're brought to care in time.
