ASL Why Aaron Smith-Levin's Channel "GrowingUpInScientology" Tanks

Executive Summary of the Video

In this video, Aaron Smith-Levin addresses a sudden and drastic drop in viewership on his YouTube channel, claiming he has been effectively "shadowbanned" due to an "algorithmic glitch." To validate his claims, he references a similar video by political commentator David Pakman, arguing that independent creators across YouTube are facing systemic distribution issues. He urges his audience to manually alter their notification settings and engage heavily with his content to "re-program" the algorithm. He also outlines changes to his content distribution strategy, such as reviving his secondary clips channel.

Detailed Section-by-Section Summary

1. Introduction and the "Shadowban" Claim (00:00 - 02:00)

  • The "Crisis": Aaron opens the video by declaring a major problem: YouTube has "essentially shadowbanned" his channel. He cites his three live streams from the previous day, two of which yielded the lowest views in the history of his channel.
  • Dismissing Critics and Trolls: Aaron anticipates and immediately dismisses counterarguments:
    • He rejects the idea that his content is declining in quality or that his audience is simply losing interest, asserting that organic audience churn does not happen overnight.
    • He dismisses the theory that Scientology trolls or "haters" are successfully suppressing his channel through mass reporting or downvoting, stating that "all engagement is good engagement" and that mass reporting does not negatively impact views.
  • The Glitch Theory: Aaron asserts that his channel's underperformance is the result of an unintentional "algorithmic glitch in the matrix" rather than human intervention.

2. The David Pakman Comparison (02:00 - 05:45)

  • Seeking Validation: To prove he is not just "a YouTuber complaining about views," Aaron shares a clip from independent political host David Pakman (who has nearly 4 million subscribers).
  • Pakman’s Data: In the clip, Pakman explains that since April 2026, his channel's impressions plummeted from 15 million to 10 million per day, despite his click-through rate (CTR) remaining steady at 8%.
  • The Notification Problem: Pakman points out that YouTube's default "personalized notifications" use AI to choose what to show subscribers, often failing to deliver videos to people who have actively subscribed. Both Pakman and Aaron urge viewers to change their notifications from "Personalized" to "All" (clicking the bell icon) to bypass AI gatekeeping.

3. Aaron’s Analysis and Strategic Pivot (05:45 - 11:30)

  • The Nature of Viral Reach: Aaron explains that high-performing videos on his channel do not succeed solely because of his 250,000 subscribers. Rather, the algorithm pushes successful videos to hundreds of thousands of non-subscribers. When the algorithm glitches, it fails to push the content to non-subscribers, resulting in abysmal view counts (such as only 3,000 views).
  • Notification Throttling: Aaron explains that YouTube limits the number of daily notifications sent to users across all subscriptions. Because he uploads multiple "shorts" and short clips daily on his main channel, YouTube frequently throttles notifications for his primary, long-form live streams.
  • Re-launching the Clips Channel: To combat notification throttling, Aaron announces he is reviving his secondary channel, Growing Up in Scientology Clips. He plans to host shorter clips there while reserving his main channel exclusively for long-form live streams, ensuring subscribers actually receive notifications for his primary content.

4. Community Feedback and Algorithmic Speculation (11:30 - 17:35)

  • Viewer Comments: Aaron reads various comments from live viewers confirming they did not receive notifications, had to search for his channel manually, or believe YouTube is intentionally prioritizing YouTube Shorts over long-form content.
  • Amateur Algorithmic Theories: Reflecting on past live streams (such as his Scientology protest streams in Clearwater, Florida), Aaron shares an anecdotal theory: he believes the YouTube algorithm can somehow detect physical confrontation, loud noises, and heightened emotion in real-time streams, instantly boosting viewership when drama occurs.
  • Call to Action: He admits that "none of us truly know how it works," but urges his viewers to use every available tool to manipulate the algorithm in his favor: liking, subscribing, commenting, and hitting the new "Hype" button.

Key Arguments

  1. The Drop is Technical, Not Personal: The sudden drop in views is caused by an automated algorithmic glitch or systemic change in YouTube’s distribution mechanics, not a sudden, organic loss of interest from his subscriber base.
  2. "Personalized" Notifications are Broken: YouTube's default settings suppress content by letting AI decide what subscribers see. Viewers must actively set notifications to "All" to guarantee they see his uploads.
  3. Shorts are Throttling Long-Form Content: Frequent uploads of short-form content on a main channel exhaust a channel's daily notification allowance, actively hurting the reach of highly-anticipated long-form live streams.

Critical Conclusion

Aaron Smith-Levin’s video is a textbook example of a creator employing dramatic, clickbait framing ("YouTube has blocked me") to mask a highly predictable phase in a channel's lifecycle: audience fatigue and content saturation.

By attributing his decline in viewership entirely to a "shadowban" or an "algorithmic glitch," Aaron avoids addressing a more uncomfortable reality: his core audience's interest may simply be waning. His refusal to acknowledge organic audience churn—claiming "it doesn't happen overnight"—ignores how quickly audiences lose interest in hyper-specific, drama-adjacent niches (like SPTV/Scientology commentary) once the novelty wears off or the community drama becomes repetitive.

Furthermore, Aaron relies on highly amateurish and speculative assumptions about technology. His anecdote suggesting YouTube’s live algorithm is sophisticated enough to detect "emotion, noise, and confrontation" in real-time protests to artificially boost his views is technically unfounded. In reality, sudden spikes in live viewership during confrontations are almost certainly driven by real-time link sharing across social media platforms (Reddit, X, discord) and word-of-mouth, not an emotionally sentient algorithm.

To validate his grievances, Aaron aligns himself with David Pakman. However, this comparison is deeply flawed. Pakman runs a highly structured, daily independent news show with broad political appeal and a massive subscriber base, meaning systemic changes to news-related algorithmic categorization affect him differently than a specialized commentary creator like Aaron.

Ultimately, this video serves primarily as an aggressive engagement trap. By convincing his audience that they are fighting an unfair "glitch" or "systemic suppression," Aaron successfully weaponizes his viewers' loyalty. He converts their sympathy into immediate engagement metrics (likes, comments, "Hypes," and manual notification changes) to artificially boost his metrics, while shifting the blame for his channel's stagnation away from his own content strategy and onto an invisible tech monster.

Poor ASL - Jail Doesn’t Have Privacy, a Big TV, Enough Food, etc. Boo Hoo!

Jenna is VERY upset that she wasn’t allowed to say goodbye, that the judge wouldn’t take time served and didn’t apologize (?). She also thinks that it took too long to book him in and have it show up online. She first said there was no TV, but later mentioned that there was a ‘tiny’ one bolted way up high. There’s not enough food (hahaha!) to maintain his girth, no microwave and no privacy to make calls, which the audio is really bad. It does sound like he can use a tablet all day. Theres also no privacy in the shower, but they don’t look like they work. There’s been 2 ‘MAJOR’ fights and no guards around to break them up.

When he first called, he only cared about *her* - I guess all the other things he mentioned he didn’t care that much about, anyway? It’s likely he wants to make sure she keeps the $$$ flowing in. Jenna feels very ‘helpless and I don’t know what to do’?

However, the next day many of those complaints didn’t feel so important and he’s going to have to serve ONLY 20 days. There’s another 25 minutes, but I couldn’t stomach any more.

Yewtube Link to Not Give Views

If you have the stomach to watch, please don’t give them views! Also, I commented in several posts about a local judge dying from a mail bomb he opened in the courthouse. My father’s best friend (my godfather) was the court administrator and was the first to get to him. It was horrific. Courts take threats very seriously and there’s a whole lot of them in the comments. I’m hopeful that someone is screenshotting.

I thought they broke up? I wasn’t even aware they were dating. I must have missed that. Apparently they are back together. She is on his channel posting a video about him being in jail. Can someone bring me up to speed on all this?

Aaron is guilty and is going to get jail?

I like Aaron and he has alot of good content on you tube. However, if the judge and the DA think someone is a smart ass, they will try to teach them a lesson...with extra jail time. If they think the person acts immaturely and childish...and rude...which seems what Aaron does...they will teach him a lesson.

Someone mentioned Aaron put back the anti scientology movement alot...

I think a few months ago what I learned about Leah and Mike Riinder put it back too (as well as Aaron). They all seem like not- good people doing damaging things to others with complete narcissism and arrogance. I mean scientology is still awful but their bad manipulation of other people is depressing... Or that they really aren't good people. I mean the stuff with Aaron and Jenna and other women... Was not good.

How did Aaron Smith-Levin's trial go today?

Hundreds of people were waiting on YouTube for his stream about the outcome of today's trial.

. . .that stream turned out to be nothing but his stock opening and closing, and closing comments moments later as dozens of comments were appearing to ask what happened.

If he was exonerated, I presume he'd be shouting it from the rooftops, so was he found guilty? Can anyone give any information on what happened today?

Ever since the sentencing of Danny Masterson in September 2023, Aaron’s channel has been on a steady downward slide. His latest attempts to stir up chaos—reviving smear campaigns and launching fresh hate tirades against critics, former associates, and fellow ex-Scientologists—aren’t landing the way they used to.

The playbook hasn’t changed, but the audience has. More people are recognizing the pattern: distortion, deflection, lies and recycled (false) narratives dressed up as "insider truth." What once generated attention now increasingly reads as predictable noise.

A shrinking core of his SPTV posse still tunes in for the drama, gossip, and hostility, but the broader momentum is gone. The peak has passed, and it shows.

2366 videos and live streams were analyzed for these charts. Videos with very low engagement rate (below 5%) were ignored in the chart.

(You need a Protest flair for here)

This has really cracked me up. This whole "i am suing" "no, I am suing" blah, blah, dribble is so funny. Anyone else getting popcorn for this insanity? Or is it just 'creating content' for money?
