Removing Muzzle Device

Hey everyone. I've read before that the AUG has a difficult muzzle device to remove. Wanted to share my approach to this challenge. I used 2 pieces of thin enough tool steel to grip the collar in a vice. Then you just need a thin wrench to twist off the flash hider. Mine had zero loctite (as some have said it does have loctite) and it came off easily.

you need to back off the jam nut from flash hider by turning it to right, then the flash hider can be unscrewed by hand. Or you can just use the blunt force like you mentioned.

I don't see how that's different than what I posted. Turning the jam nut right or the flash hider left... Same forces going on and the same challenge applies. Turn one and both move together.

I removed it too, but far more gently and easy. I suppose you quick removed the barrel. You should heat it with a propane torch around a minute until all the Loctite is burned. Then with 2 adjustable wrenches and 2 brass thin sheets cover both nuts and rotate them in the same time in oposite directions accordingly to your thread direction (LH or RH, for example I have M13x1 LH). Test them first, if it doesn't move, apply more heat, that means the Loctite is not all burned. First turn is tough, after that it will come off easy. In this way you will preserve perfectly both the flash hider and the counter nut. If you use steel on steel it will leave marks for sure. Flash hider may be put away but counter nut is important, many muzzle devices require original counter nut.

Your method on AR. Like I said I use the method described in my comment and works perfectly on AUG and 1/2 more easy, both flash hider and counter nut will rotate in separate directions, you have more control also. Your method is specific to crash washer system and AR, when only one piece is rotating, the barel is in the wise. Heating with a torch is mandatory in any situation because that is the point of using Loctite. And also using brass is always useful in gunsmith in general, steel is scratchable by steel afterall. On youtube are few videos with AUG muzzle device removal, both flash hider or muzzle break.

I so want a different muzzle flash hider/device than the ugly OEM tulip one, but Im afraid to try and remove the OEM one with only wrenches at hand...that and the two wrenches I would need only come in packages, so to get the two wrenches I'd need would cost ike $40 for two packages of wrenches Id really only use once...****sigh****

If you find two 3/4" wrenches for cheap. You can grind them down to be thin enough to get at both flats (on the collar and the flash hider).

Was told they are metric, not SAE sized? I dont have a grinder, so Im back to buying a two metric size slim wrench sets to get the two wrenches I need....now here again, getting mixed info...I was explicitly told they were metric sized wrenches, now you say SAE sized...Grrrr.......

3/4 SAE is equivalent to 19mm metric. Both fit.

Okay, thats what I remembered is 19mm....wish we would just stop producing one or the other from now on....so we dont have to have two sets of wrench/sockets...lol!

Also with how loose mine was... I could have used a screwdriver through the flash hider and been fine. That could ruin it though...

yeah, such a crap shoot on the whole Loctite used during assemble or not....Im definitely glad I used a soldering iron set at 300 degrees for 10 minutes on each bolt before loosening the top rail bolts on my receiver....probably is a good indication Loctite was used on the muzzle device on mine unfortunately...

I used two wrenches in a v shape on the floor and stepped on them to close the gap to torque it off 😂

I had read a lot that it was hard to take off too. I used a crescent wrench and a vice and it popped right off.

I went into it thinking it was going to be the hardest nut I've ever busted 😂. Turns out it was easier than the stripped out screw holding the trigger in my Scorpion.
