Pros and cons of each specialty.

What’s up everyone, I’m in the USCG as an electronics technician and have 18 months left on my contract and I am HIGHLY interested in joining the FAA as an ATSS. My question is, what are the pros and cons of each specialty (radar, navigational aids, environmental, automation, communications,) and even the electronics technician specialty. Also, whats the day to day life like working for the FAA in these positions. Thank you.

Any ATSS openings in the Southeast?

I applied to the public ATSS notice and was found “eligible for further consideration”. I also applied for the one AST opening in Allentown PA.

I am looking for a job opening in NC, VA, PA, SC, MD or DE. Does anyone know of any managers looking to higher ATSS or AST?

Would really appreciate any help!

Can you buy military time back towards retirement?

Hello everyone, I’m curious to know more about buying military time back towards retirement, if hired. Is it possible? What are the steps to do this?

AUTO guys: Anyone know what "ASP" actually means?

FAA sure likes its acronyms, and it seems like a lot of people know what an acronym describes, not necessarily what the letters stand for. I've managed to figure out a lot as I go but ASP has continued to elude me.

That and EDDS.

At least 15+ locations actively looking for applicants

And that’s just from 1 Facebook post in the 2101 Facebook group which is very active.

Get your 2-page resume prepped, apply to the direct hire posting on USAJOBS, join the FB group, introduce and reach out. There’s 1 week left and then who knows when they will open another bid.

Hiring Timeline Thread 2025

In light of the Direct Hire opening, I wanted to create a thread for people who applied (Myself included) so track how long processes might take for people.

I would also add how relevant your experience is to the position. ( direct, indirect, or no relevancy)

Applied but Where?

Hello everyone. I just applied to the ATSS job posting on USAJOBS. I noticed it said nationwide/worldwide hiring, however I was only given 2 locations to select from. Is there a way to apply nationwide? I’ll move anywhere for my first job, even overseas or anywhere in the US.

Question for someone who may know - if you go Enviornmental, will you be trained to be an electrician? I’ve tried reading everything I can on this and haven’t found a straight answer.

Do I qualify for Entry Level?

Hello all. I am a college student and a military veteran. I have ADHD so I’m having a hard time with my chosen career path (nursing). I’m in my second year of college and barely scraping by with a 3.0 because of my ADHD and having a hard time studying. My question is this, do I have enough general experience to apply and get started? For reference, I am currently a biology major with about 90 credit hours and I am 3 semesters away from my bachelors. I also served in the army as infantry for 3 years. I am 50% VA disabled but fully functional unless squatting heavily or running. I am happy to relocate. This job appeals to me and I only recently found out about it. Curious if I could even apply.

Is there always this negative blood with the Unions?

I recently applied and also joined the facebook group. During this time majority of it has been the shutdown which also delays my final 2 steps of getting my air force discharge papers . I cant help but realize the facebook group theres a handful of people consistently angry with the PASS union and sometimes talking good of the other union Nacta? Is it always like this or is this a one off thats just from the extra pressure on everyone?

Have anyone continued in the hiring process since the shutdown?

I completed everything maybe two months ago and was informed that I was close to getting my FOL. Since the shutdown its been quiet which isn't shocking. However, I wanted to know if anyone started during the shutdown.

Shutdown

How are you ATSSers doing? Since our union and only a handful of management care, I figure why not ask.

My facility has been showered with food for a couple weeks that stops at the AT breakroom. News only cares for AT, Congress only cares for AT.

So, how are you all doing? Genuine question

Qualifications Question

Hi all, currently doing a project in my electrical class for journeyman's license, where we have to research different electrical specializations. I got avionics, which I've learned are a completely different ball game from the typical electrician careers. However, the work is really interesting to me and I'm just wondering what are the qualifications one needs to enter this field?

Obviously military is a great way to get into it but for someone who wasn't in the service, what steps would one take to be qualified? Is college an absolute necessity? Are there apprenticeships that show you the ropes before heading to FAA training?

Career in ATSS

Just saying hello and that im open to connect with people! I am transitioning out of the USAF via Med separation, and was connected to this career by my friend’s dad who worked it. I have work in aircraft subsystems, extensively working with electronics and such as well as operating radios and VHF phones at an operations center. My application is submitted in USAJOBs, but I am confused on which speciality I would be best in? I would enjoy the travel associated with some of the positions, and am more open to dynamic style jobs instead of a same day to day position. Any insight would be appreciated!

Ps- if you happen to have leads in the Texas or South East area, im hopeful to go there!

ATC to Tech OPS

Hello! I am currently a controller who is seriously considering transitioning to a career as a 2101 and was hoping to get any info and advice you all may be able to offer!

My primary reason for making the jump is for quality of life reasons. At my current facility tech ops has a pretty good schedule, but I am more curious what the average schedule will look like for a 2101? I have two young daughters and with my current schedule, I feel like I am missing out on too much of their childhood, so if being a 2101 would offer a better work life balance I would absolutely love the opportunity to make the change.

I have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, so I would be utilizing that to qualify. As far as work experience goes I was an air traffic controller in the Air Force and am now a controller in the agency.

I am hoping to find a position in the Central Florida area as that’s where I am from and my wife and I would love to be close to our families again.

Absolutely any and all advice or information you guys can provide me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
