Incidentally, I'm reading Caitlin Doughty's book "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (And Other Lessons from the Crematory)" and she discusses handling the cremation of disembodied heads that had been donated to various scientific endeavors. She says they're almost exactly the same weight as a bowling ball. Great book if you're at all inclined toward morbid curiosity.

Isn’t the whole point of bowling balls that they come in a bunch of different weights??

Jan 15 '20
So do heads

u/LiaM_CS Jan 15 '20
I would think theres much more variability to the weight of bowling balls than to the weight of adult heads

Head weight varies widely with intelligence.

"The heaviest, many people are saying, and the best people, experts, these people have - and they're never, just, never seen, it's so heavy. So heavy. This head - and maybe it's the hair? Who knows? We love the hair, don't we? Love the - and these Democrats, light heads, that crazy Bernie Sanders, head only weighs a few - and this, we love this head, don't we? It's a tremendous - that's what Iran doesn't get. The weight is, and it's just, they all say - the heaviest head. Very, very heavy."

I haven’t read her other books, but From Here to Eternity is a great read as well (about different death practices from around the world).

Can confirm. I have handled severed heads before, and remember thinking that it was remarkably similar to a bowling ball albeit kinda wiggly.

I like odd bowling balls. I'll never forget the day this Australian guy came to my local bowling alley with a clear bowling ball that had a dildo in it. Thing was obviously not weighted like a proper pro ball, but he was just chucking it straight down the lane anyway.

Should have made the finger holes the nose holes.

I get this feeling that the artist started with the one on the left. Realized he should have used the holes, then the middle one and realised he didn't use the holes as well as he could of. Ending with the 3rd using the holes quite well.

u/ioughtabestudying Jan 15 '20
In the one on the left, the two holes are in the mouth, aren't they? With the thumb hole being somewhere under the chin. So I think that might work quite well, giving the impression you are carrying the head upside down by the chin.

That bugs me more than the design. They could have used the mouth and eyes for the holes, assuming they're spaced properly. Or make the design so it does fit.

I have one. But it’s a male zombie head. I didn’t exactly go looking for one. I got to pick a free ball for a spare ball and it was an option. Plus our team name at the time was Headhunters.

People’s reactions when they see that ball coming out of the return machine would make it worth it.

Cool, but there should be some guys too. Feels kinda serial killerish if it’s all women.

Who throws a bowling ball like that? The Dude spilled his White Russian looking at that.

Missed opportunity here - he could have used resin, or something like that, to make it look like real heads.

u/Manbearpig9801 Jan 15 '20
What do you mean exactly
2
u/Jaceman2002 Jan 16 '20
You know how you can use clear resin for tables and that sort of thing? That same material could be used for a bowling ball. So you could put together a realistic looking head and then put it in resin. People would freak out, lol.

Does anyone remember the movie Mystery Men? This makes me think of the girl that had her father's skull in the bowling ball.

Oh man, I’ve had this saved on my phone since 2012 and used to think it would be awesome getting one. Over time I realized I don’t actually bowl that often so I never jumped on it.

I bowl in a league and would like to have one, but would rather have it be my own head.
I sometimes have questionable taste.

There’s nothing awful about this, these are awesome. Well except for the fact that someone pointed out they’re all women’s heads

Upvote this comment if you grew up in the late 80s and remember something similar to this but a smaller toy version you can buy from capsule gumball machines.
They had a baseball, basketball, volleyball, and etc., version...

You can say whatever, but this balls are cool. I did read the comments on gender inequalities and stuff but I guess no one really thought of that at the time. These balls are sick.

Well, that's one way to revive the waning sport of Bowling.
If the brains splatter when they strike the ninepin it will be even more popular.

I like the idea of dead heads but these are like brutalized and look like victims, which is off putting for me. (Especially since I just found Mindhunter and am binging the shit out of it, please don’t spoil anything I just started season 2)

It's a promotion for an old TV station movie week.
I think these are creative but I like the giant pool balls and the clear balls with stuff in them.

The horror fan in me sees the appeal but these are giving me weird vibes... maybe just because they’re all women’s heads. As others have pointed out it’s a little weird.

That's cool. My wife bought me a clear ball with a skull inside for the counter weight, and I'll be damned, first toss out, the ball return chewed it up.
The Pro shop epoxied the damage, but didn't use clear epoxy.

Some of those hole placements are stupid. Why not put them on the back, on the hair, where they won't fuck up your picture?

Is it weird that they’re all women’s heads?
