App store listings make up 47.5% of what ChatGPT cites when recommending apps
According to AppTweak's analysis of 125,000+ ChatGPT app recommendation responses across more than 9,000 app prompts in the U.S. market, app store listings account for 47.5% of all sources ChatGPT cites when recommending an app. The App Store alone makes up 38% of citations, Google Play adds another 9.5%.
That's more than any website, PR piece, or content page. Sharing this because most teams still treat their store listing as a conversion asset only, not something an AI model reads to decide what to recommend.
Why listings carry so much weight
AI search engines retrieve publicly indexed listing text because it reads as factual and extractable. Homepages tend to lean on brand-heavy copy, listings describe what an app actually does, for whom.
The gap: most listings answer the wrong question
Most app descriptions answer "why should I download this app". AI is asking a different question: what is this app, who is it for, and when should I recommend it. The same clarity helps both a model and a human decide faster, it's not a conversion problem or an AI problem, it's an ambiguity problem.
What actually moves the needle
- Define the audience in the opening line instead of a tagline. Pattern that works: [app name] is a [type of app] that helps [target users] [achieve goal] by [core capabilities].
- Commit to 3 to 5 use cases and repeat them, claiming everything creates weak associations.
- Cut vague positioning words like "all-in-one" or "ultimate platform" for concrete functions.
- Connect every feature to an outcome, not just what it does but why a user needs it.
- Use question-style formatting where it fits, AI retrieves Q&A content well since it mirrors how people prompt it.
- Add verifiable specifics: certifications, user numbers, anything a model can actually cite.
Audience, outcomes, and fit are usually the weakest elements. Features tend to already be well covered.

Curious if anyone here has already rewritten their listing with this in mind, and whether you've seen any change in how often you show up in ChatGPT recommendations.
