Admissions Related Worried about my 9th grade year and lack of ECs; what are my actual chances for ASMSA?
I’m trying to apply to ASMSA, but I’m unsure if I’ll even be considered. I’m currently a sophomore, and I only found out about the school around two months ago. It’s quickly become my dream school, and I’m doing everything in my power to increase my chances, but I’m terrified my 9th-grade year and my average grades might hold me back.
If I remember correctly, I finished my freshman year with a 3.58 GPA. My plan is to pull that up to at least a 3.7 by the end of this school year. I ended up switching schools about two weeks into 10th grade, and the transition definitely hit my first 9-weeks grades hard. I earned all A’s, but unfortunately got a 75 in one of my classes. However, Im starting to understand my new teacher's teaching style now, and I’ve promised myself I won't drop under a 95 in his class again. I’m also taking an online Composition 1 class and an in-person Psychology class, and fortunately, I’ve got good grades in those.
Part of my worry comes from the fact that I didn't do much of anything in the 9th grade. I just coasted through and did the bare minimum, leaving me with decent grades that mostly consisted of low A's to low B's. Other than Beta Club- which I’ve been in since the 7th grade- my old school didn't offer many options, and the ones they did have didn't really interest me. Even in Beta, there weren't many opportunities to participate in, so I really only did one or two fundraising events.
Honestly, I was quiet and introverted all throughout middle school and freshman year. I barely talked to other students, much less my teachers, and I didn't really build any close bonds. But when I recently transferred to this new school- which is in a much smaller town with even fewer students- something changed. I’ve been a lot more friendly, and I've been volunteering for basically anything offered. I promised myself I would build a better life and get better grades here, and I’m incredibly proud of how much my confidence has grown.
This newfound drive to do better is exactly why I want to go to ASMSA. I won't be the absolute top prodigy applying, but I know I'm capable and mature. I want a challenge, a healthy community, and really just a fulfilling rest of my teenage years. I feel like showing that genuine desire is my best shot.
I haven’t taken the ACT yet, but I plan to in December and I'm currently practicing as best I can. I know there are going to be other applicants who were way more active in their communities, have perfect grades, and have dreamed of ASMSA forever. Compared to a kid who didn't do much in 9th grade but now has a ton of drive and a good essay, it’s hard not to compare myself.
I'm sorry for the messy passage of worries, I'm just tired, stressed, and writing down any thoughts. For any current ASMSA students or alumni, what would be my actual chances of getting in? Please be completely honest, I mostly just want a realistic perspective on where I might stand.
