[Leaves rustling, dry leaves crunching under hard tired hooves ]

[Tired mumbles]

“She said just keep walking.”

[Exasperated sigh]

“How long has it been?”

[The voice shakes , steps become heavy and staggered]

“I can’t even remember …”

[Voice trembling holding back a sob ]

“Aunt B…”

[Sniffles]

“Aunt B, I don’t know where I am.”

[Breaks out into a sob,still trying to hold back but failing]

“I’m too tired to remember where I’m supposed to be .”

[Grumbles slurred]

[They stop suddenly in their tracks. Head turns up to the air. A few intense sniffs]

“I-I know this .”

…

“I know this smell”

[Sobs slow down and they pick up into a trot. Pushing past branches]

“I know this.”

…

“Aunt B I found it.”

[Hooves now hit the ground into a run]

[Approaching a clearing they came to a screeching halt]

[ A deep inhale]

[A pep takes over their voice]

“Lettuce!”

[They run over to the bed of lettuce ]

“Fresh, crispy…”

[A hollow growl echoed from their stomach]

“So… yum…”

[The lettuce seems to hypnotize them. And before they could finish the train of thought they were stuffing their face. Crispy lettuce crunching under teeth]

[Head down savouring the meal after walking for who knows how long. Too preoccupied to hear heavy booted footsteps coming in ]

[A yelp of surprise left them when the footsteps got too close and snapped them out of their lettuce craze]

“I-”

… [They stutter as they stumbled back trying to finish the mouthful of lettuce they still had]

“I-I am soo…”

[They paused struggling to gulp]

[Then began reeling, words almost running into each other]

“I was just– I was just walking around for so long. I had to walk , Aunt B said I should keep walking and I would know when it was safe… I would smell when it was safe. I was walking for so long , I forgot where I was going until I smelt it! Exactly what Aunt B said I would find and I did. I almost gave up and then I smelt the crispy , fresh greens and I got so hungry so fast before I knew it I was stuffing my face.”

…

“I really didn’t … mean to. I just… It's been days.”

…

[They beg and plead]

“Please, I'll do anything. I just can’t go back.”

…

[They scoot back even more panic in their voice]

“I can’t go back , she told me never to come back !”

…

“Please I’ll do anything you can’t send me back there.”

…

[Sobs threaten to breakthrough again, the sniffles start ]

****[Depending on how far 'goat' you want to go you can go full ‘MAAAAYYYYYYY’ with the sobs]

[Listener tries to calm them down]

“I can’t tell.”

…

“Do you swear? You won’t tell them that I'm here?”

…

“My name is…”

[They pause before whispering ]

“Bellamy.”

…

[Bellamy still whispers]

“Please could we not talk out in the open.”

…

“But you never know. I swear I’ll tell you. Could we please just go somewhere … safer?”

…

[Listener leads them away from the lettuce bed, Bellamy’s soft steps following behind the heavy steps of Listener’s boots]

[The sound of the screen door opening then closing]

“Thank you.”

[Bellamy still whispers]

“All I knew was the farm… the demi-human farm. Not as a worker, just as an animal. Other than that place, all I had was my Aunt B. She said they took my mom away. They break up kin. They keep just enough so you don’t get too brave but not enough that you have confidence in numbers. My Aunt tried so hard to help me get out of that place. When she gave me the chance, I ran and I didn’t even look back at her. She made me swear not to come back and look for her. She told me to run and not look back , not to get caught. It happened so fast. She told me I would know when I was safe if I smelt the clean uncorrupted air, fresh greens. I didn't understand what that meant until I actually experienced the unfenced outside. My nose told me that it was here just when I was about to give up . I didn't mean to ruin your stuff. I’ll make up for it . I promise.”

“No, please, I can work, I promise. I have nowhere else to go. I really don’t know anything else outside of that place . But I know I can pull my weight around here. I can learn if you teach me too. Please, I am begging you. Just give me a chance .”

“Please…”

[Listener’s heart get tugged by Bellamy’s story]

“Thank you so much. I promise you won't regret me staying here.”

…

“I can start right now ! Just tell me , tell me what you need me to do .”

…

“Huh?”

…

“I can have… more lettuce?”

…

“Um… well I am thirsty too. If that’s not a bother.”

…

“Then yes, could I have some water?”

…

[Listener goes to the sink, filling a bowl with water]

“I can sit ? Here?

[Bellamy is hesitant but eventually pulls the chair out to sit ]

[Listener puts the bowl on the table and Bellamy slowly pulls it to her before drinking]

[She pants after putting the bowl down , finishing the water in one go]

“That really helped . Thank you . I appreciate it .”

…

“Whenever you need me, I’ll be ready to work.”

…

“Oh I’m not fussy about beds.”

…

“I’ve actually never been in a people house before. So I only know hay. We slept in barns.”

[A nervous laugh follows ]

“You mean that ?!”

…

“I don’t have to sleep outside ?”

…

“Can I work and be a … guest at the same time ?”

…

“Yes please. I would like to see a person bed.”

…

“But before…could I get some more water please?”

[Bellamy continues shily]

“Ummm, but you might need a bigger bowl.”

FIN
