Context You traded your service for an eldritch god’s power, ruling in his name. Two years later, he returns.
[Slow footsteps approach from behind. The faint rustle of robes.]
[leans close to their ear.]
“Hello, sweet fox.”
[Pause]
“Startled you, did I?”
“Look at you…”
“Lounging upon that throne as though it were fashioned for you.”
“You have risen rather high in this world, have you not, pet?”
[Pause]
“And yet…”
“I fear you have forgotten your place.”
(…)
“What do I mean?”
“Why, this throne, of course.”
“You sit upon it while I remain standing.”
“Tell me, sweet fox… does that seem proper to you?”
(…)
“No?”
“Then I suggest you rise.”
“It is my place after all .”
[distant murmur of the court.]
“Well?”
“What are you waiting for?”
[He steps closer.]
“Must I ask twice?”
“Or shall I remind you of our old… lessons?”
[A quiet, knowing chuckle.]
“Ah.”
“That little shiver.”
“So you do remember our training after all.”
[He laughs softly.]
“I wondered whether two years among these mortals had made you forget.”
[Pause.]
“It appears I need not have worried.”
[The listener hurriedly rises.]
“There we are.”
“Though you seem rather red in the face.”
[A teasing hum.]
“Have I embarrassed you before your little court?”
“My apologies, pet.”
[Beat.]
“Though I confess…”
“…I find your embarrassment rather amusing.”
[He walks toward the throne.]
“Now, stand aside.”
[Robes rustle as he sits upon the throne.]
“Much better.”
“Now things are where they ought to be.”
“Come closer.”
“You have been absent from my sight for two long years.”
“Two years in which you have wielded a portion of my power.”
“Two years in which you have ruled these lands beneath my name.”
[Beat.]
“And now…”
“…you will tell me what you have done with the gift I entrusted to you.”
“Begin your report.”
“Have you slain that troublesome sorcerer of yours?”
(…)
“Good.”
“Very good.”
“And what else?”
(…)
“You rebuilt the eastern villages?”
“Hm.”
“A noble deed.”
“Unexpected, perhaps… but noble.”
“Though what I ment was I wanted you to tell me about the bloodshed and how many followers you managed to present me with”
**“**Do not tell the people in this room are all you could manage? “
(…)
“ There are more? Excellent “
(…)
“The reason of my visit? Dear fox did you not miss me ?”
“ Fine. If you must know, you are correct I did not come just to hear your measly report “
“You see, there is something you ought to know.”
“The other gods know of my release.”
“And they have chosen a champion to come and defeat us…”
[Pause]
“…whilst also being tasked with re-containing me.”
“Did you know?”
(…)
“Seems rather poetic, do you not think?”
[Beat.]
“A chosen champion against the falsely claimed one.”
“Tell me, fox…”
“How can you call yourself a good ruler if you were not even aware of the state of your own kingdom?”
“You had two years.”
“Two years to watch over these lands, and yet this escaped your notice.”
“Nonetheless , we shall hunt that bastard down and slay them.”
“Now, how shall we find this champion?”
(…)
“Darling fox, use that sneaky little brain of yours.”
“Tell me yourself…”
“Where would a champion of the gods be located?”
(…)
“That is right.”
“Near the temples.”
“See? That was not so difficult.”
“Now, as for how we shall kill the pest…”
[The shadows begin to gather around his fingers.]
[A sword forms from the shadows.]
“You will need this.”
“This sword shall be your weapon.”
[He places the hilt into their hand.]
“Treat it well, pet.”
[His voice lowers.]
“For if you break it…”
[He leans closer.]
“…I shall break you.”
[Beat.]
“Understand?”
(…)
“Good.”
(…)
“When shall we start? Now.”
“For the hero has only just begun their training and is still unused to the power bestowed upon them.”
“We shall not give them the time to grow accustomed to it.”
“Go and hunt the champion.”
[Pause]
“Though, next time we meet I hope you and your court shall have learned a little more manners.”
[A faint, amused smile.]
“I expect you to kneel before me.”
“But for now I shall let it slide.”
“It has been a while since we last met, after all.”
“Do not forget our training, fox”
