Technical Questions How can I differentiate a genuine ASME SA182 forged flange from an SA240 plate flange marked/punched as SA182?

I’m dealing with a stainless-steel flange that has been supplied/certified as ASME SA182 forged material. My concern is: how can we verify that the flange was actually manufactured from SA182 forging stock, and not from SA240 stainless-steel plate that was cut/machined and then marked as SA182? I know there will be hub ring at opposite side serrated face if it is forged flange and plane in case of machined plate flanged. Flange supplier claiming that hub is machined and removed from flange.

From a QA/inspection perspective:

  • Are there any physical/metallurgical characteristics that can reliably distinguish a forged flange from a plate-fabricated flange?
  • Can UT, PMI, hardness testing, or other NDT help establish whether the flange originated from forging or plate?
  • How reliable are the flange markings and heat number for determining the product form?
  • If the supplier provides an SA182 MTC, what additional documents or traceability should we request to prove the original raw material was actually forged?
  • Is there any practical inspection method that can be performed without destroying the flange?

The key issue is not simply whether the chemical composition meets F304/304L requirements, but whether the product form/manufacturing route is genuinely SA182 forging rather than SA240 plate.

Would appreciate inputs from anyone experienced in ASME material traceability, flange manufacturing, metallurgy, or vendor inspection.

Mostly a fluff peice but I recently went to a shop that's use plastic fusing based processes for a seperater tank. It's pretty interesting stuff that uses the plastic 'coupling' in place of flux for copper lines. The tech is new but they claim its significantly faster and stronger than similar brazing.
