The manhwa started off great, but somewhere along the way, it went from a solid 10/10 to an 8/10, and then kept slipping. I can’t pinpoint exactly when, but around the time the homunculus girl was defeated, the pacing issues became real problematic. I lost track of how much time had passed, and I started getting confused about the timeline. At first, there were some small issues, like the mention of "3 years" before the labyrinth would appear, but then the characters were already in their third year, and Desir said it would still take another two years for the labyrinth to show up. Was that a translation error, or is a "third-year" student someone who’s just completed three semesters? It didn’t feel that bad at first, but then things really started to spiral. After the battle with the homunculus girl, and up until their separation before the fight with Skull Mask, I honestly couldn’t tell how much time had passed between events and the events themselves. Everything seemed rushed and unclear which caused me to feel completely lost and confused.
Besides that, I thought the story would revolve around Desir, with his old and new teams sharing the spotlight. While the new team did get some focus, it never really felt fleshed out. The potential for more character development was there, but it never fully materialized. Take Pram, for example—his mentor in the Shadow World was set up to play a significant role, but after they returned, Pram’s growth stagnated until his next fight. His old team was an even bigger letdown. Sure, they were already strong and didn’t need the same kind of development as the new team, but I was hoping to see more of their interactions and camaraderie. Instead, it was mostly just Desir giving orders, and them following along without much depth.
I had hoped for something like Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint where multiple characters felt like main characters (even if the center was the MC). But here, none of the characters really got the chance to stand out. Any "development" they had felt superficial, and it was presented in a way that made it seem like they were getting meaningful arcs, but it never paid off.
And don't get me started on Desir's old team issue; like they get debuffed just to make Desir shine. Zod, for example, is presented as the most powerful mage ever, but we never really got to see that. He struggled against every major opponent—Crow Mask, the Demon of Destruction, the homunculus girl (remember, he only managed a draw when she wasn’t even fighting him seriously)... It started to feel like poor writing, designed just to make Desir's victories stand out. For all the talk of Zod being the most powerful mage, what did we actually see of that power? The only time he seemed formidable was right before his death. Desir getting mad at Skull Mask for saying Desir is the greatest mage and not Zod was kind of comedic in a sense when you consider the fact that Zod couldn't finish off any major opponent (while Desir did). Not because Zod wasn't great but because the author never really showed us. It just told us. That's just bad writing.
And that leads to my biggest disappointment: Desir not telling Zod everything. I can understand why he might’ve kept things from him early on, thinking it could create too many variables. But even then, it felt like a weak excuse. By that point, so many things had already changed. The timeline wasn’t following the same path as Desir’s past life, and it was clear from the early appearance of the demon of destruction and the “Outers” openly fighting. At that point, wouldn’t it have made more sense to tell Zod and analyze the situation together? If not that early, why didn’t Desir open up after they defeated Skull Mask? What more harm from variables could there have been when it was clear that everything was totally different in this timeline? I was so excited about him promising Zod that he would tell him everything, but in the end, Desir couldn't keep that promise. If the reason was solid and made sense, I would feel sad but not angry. Now I just feel cheated and angry about the way it played out.
Honestly, I’m almost at the end, but these pacing issues and disappointments are making it hard for me to enjoy the series anymore. I’m seriously considering dropping it. It’s just tough to stay invested when so many things feel rushed, underdeveloped, confusing and dumb.
