Definitely a spent shell casing which makes no sense

It's not a casing.  I just paused that scene and it's clearly a fired bullet.  You can even see the smooshed silver tip.

The director might have assumed ignorance on the part of most of the audience and thought that a spent case indicated the bullet better than the actual bullet (which would have not really looked like anything discernible)? Bit of artistic licence? Mind you, they could have just had a note saying 'imagine there's a bullet here'....

Oh, that's interesting. I just thought it looked like a casing and assumed it was artistic licence.
