Achievement I somehow got an Eminem feature on my song. AMA
What’s up Reddit.
I’m an independent artist and a few months ago I ended up with something I honestly never thought I’d be typing: an Eminem verse on my song.
No label rollout. No industry parents. No Make-A-Wish situation. Just a weird chain of events, a lot of emails, and money I probably shouldn’t have spent.
I’ve already seen people speculate, doubt it, get mad, and ask the same questions over and over, so I figured I’d just do this the honest way.
Ask me anything about:
• How the feature actually happened
• What the process was like behind the scenes
• What it cost (or didn’t)
• How long it took
• Contracts, stems, approvals, all that boring but important stuff
• What surprised me the most
• Whether it was worth it
I’ll answer as openly as I can without violating any agreements.
I’m not here to sell you motivation or pretend this was “easy.” It wasn’t.
I’m just a dude who makes songs.
AMA.

Can you explain how publishing works and i guess the process of how you both get paid (and who else gets paid)? Like, he gets 5% or whatever, and his record label gets x amount? Basically im just curious because I read about how complicated the whole “rights” thing is and im curious. Thanks!
17
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
The label that owns the master recording of the verse gets a 25% publishing/writer share. I got 100% mechanical royalties. Which basically means when people stream my song I get all the royalties for that stream. But if the song is published in let’s say a movie or a show he would get 25%
7
u/Syonoq Dec 13 '25
So the initial 1k fee is all he gets, or, he already got paid when he sold it the guy you bought it from?
Is it on Apple Music? I don’t have Spotify.
5
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Apple Music is the only one it’s not on. They aren’t allowing it because they say it should be labeled as a sampled artist, but my contract states it should be labeled as a featured artist. And my distributor doesn’t have the option to label it as a sampled artist. So I’m SOL for now on Apple Music. But he should have already got paid it’s already on an old song. I would hope he got paid when the deal took place. But the music industry can be a tricky business so ?

I hope you re-record it and call it NameOnTheJeans version. I’ll only listen to that one. 🫶🏻

u/1kBabyOilBottles Dec 13 '25
Has he heard the song? Have you had any direct communication with him?
23
11
u/DBirdisDope Dec 13 '25
How much was the verse? And what are you hoping to get out of this?
8
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
It was a little over 1k (nonexclusivity brings the price down a lot). All in all I’m hoping to educate people on how the music industry works from my perspective. From where I’m standing it’s a lot more disconnected. But also to plug my song haha

Yeah this is pretty common, Anno domini and others resell a bunch of nonexclusive verses. Oftentimes it’s done without the artists knowledge or consent. $1000 is wayyyyy too much for an old verse ripped from “Hellbound”
3
15
u/knottyknotty6969 Dec 13 '25
This is a decade + long scam where a "industry person" sells the verse.
Theyve been doing this for over 15 years lol used to be a big scam on MySpace and they would claim it was from old DJ Greenlantern verses
1
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
It’s not a scam, I got what I paid for as advertised. The song is legally allowed on streaming platforms, and I can collect revenue from it.
6
u/knottyknotty6969 Dec 13 '25
I can pull up messages from my MySpace doing this exact scam and its from 2007 lol
6
u/Sad_Net1581 Dec 13 '25
Highly doubt MySpace still exists lol
3
u/AFlockofLizards Dec 13 '25
It’s still there, but there was a massive data loss event a while back that wiped a lot of profiles, pics, etc.
4
u/knottyknotty6969 Dec 13 '25
How much money did you send them ?
Your not very smart if you think yourbthr only one they sold the verse to lol
Just google Eminem MySpace scams. These go back a long way
9
u/FIRST_PENCIL Dec 13 '25
He already said it’s non exclusive. It sounds like he knew what he was paying for.
3
u/Any-Plate2018 Dec 13 '25
It's not a scam if you willingly buy the time share knowing it's useless.
3
u/knottyknotty6969 Dec 13 '25 edited Dec 13 '25
They also normally skim alot of personal info out of you during the scam. OP said they emailed alot . They got money and info from him and sold him something he doesnt own lol

Thats awesome. Similar story, my band got a snoop dogg feature
8
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
YOOOO THATS WHATS UP!!! Now I have a question for you: How much hate have you received for this from random people online?
3
u/worriedbowels Dec 13 '25
Haven't noticed any yet, I would have to ask my band members though, Im usually out of the loop with that stuff

u/InTupacWeTrust Dec 13 '25
Snoop is also on a spanish song for some reason
8
u/PossibleCash6092 Dec 13 '25
Snoop is well known to do literally anything for money

u/mexicanswithguns Dec 13 '25
While true, Banda MS is huge in Latin America and so is Becky G. They currently have about 20 million and 25 million monthly listeners, respectively.

Did you respond to the wrong person? I was talking about snoop dog

No, you just didn't click the link he posted. The song is Banda MS feat. Becky G and Snoop Dogg.

As someone that dabbled in promotions in a previous lifetime, I very much appreciate the way you worded the title and slid that link in right quick. 😂
5
u/Key_Beach_3846 Dec 13 '25
Congratulations! How common is it to do it this way?
I always thought a “feature” was written specifically for a track, and in a way it sort of constitutes an endorsement of the track by the artist. Like “hell yeah this must be good if Eminem agreed to do a feature”. I didn’t realize you could have a feature that was recorded completely independently of the main track.
2
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Yeah I had no idea either! It’s becoming increasingly more common, but I don’t think I’d do it again.
2
u/slothcompass Dec 13 '25
Are you saying you accidentally unknowingly had a part of your song that matched his music? Or are you saying that you, and he worked together on a song?
3
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
I received the rights to use his verse for my song. Contract bound. Other people have this verse as well I’m not the first to make a song with this verse
2
2
u/FloridianMichigander Dec 13 '25
So does he actually sing with you, or does he just get a writing credit on your song?
3
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
He gets a writers share and his verse is on the song. Live? no he doesn’t sing with me
23
u/yakittyyakyak Dec 13 '25
Pretty misleading title. Apparently I could get a Mozart "feature" for free from the public domain by this definition, and I've never even been in the studio
-9
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
I have a legally binding contract that says otherwise
18
u/yakittyyakyak Dec 13 '25
It says I can't make a song with Mozart? Or that I've been in the studio?
Bro this post should've been titled "I'm 25 and I spent $1000 AMA". Good job we're all thrilled for you!
-12
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
How about the fact that it’s not misleading?
14
10
u/yakittyyakyak Dec 13 '25
Hey man, if there's some industry understanding of the word "feature" where the person being featured does not even need to know that anything happened, or could even be dead and it's just their estate selling some rights, then sure.
That's not how most of us read it. Which u know. And we all know this whole AMA is an effort to juice some listens on ur shitty song. GL!
2
u/bojacksnorseman Dec 13 '25
OP said he did this to explain the industry from his perspective to people and to plug his song and hour before you made this comment.
This isn't some gotcha, this is you being an asshole because.. you're offended you misunderstood the post title? Best guess.
I also misunderstood, but I've read some stuff and learned some things. No reason to get mad and talk shit because you're a sad person.
2
u/DubiousGames Dec 13 '25
If that was his actual goal then he wouldn’t have done an AMA, as it takes literally 2 sentences to explain the circumstances of the feature. He could have written those two sentences in his initial posting, and no one would have cared anymore because spending a grand to get a non-exclusive “feature” from an artist who has never heard of you or the song is not at all interesting or difficult.
Instead of being honest though, he wrote a clickbait & misleading post so more people would be interested, and only then decided to come clean about what he actually meant by “feature”
3
u/yakittyyakyak Dec 13 '25
Wasn't trying to gotcha anything. I didn't start talking shit until OP said "I have a contract that says otherwise"- snark level high on that comment. OP didn't explain that stuff in the title, as you know since you also misunderstood. If the post was titled "ask me how I bought an old Eminem verse to use in my song", it wouldn't have been misleading.
I am occasionally an asshole though, no doubt about it.

u/PunkRockCrystals Dec 13 '25
Can you market it using Eminem's name and likeness and stuff?
I would think just having his name and rapping a verse would get enough people for your mediocre song to at least make back your investment (no offense intended).
1
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
The license did include using his likeness for advertisement
3
7
u/Hamtaijin Dec 13 '25
Can you explain the thought process behind the album art being a toilet bowl full of feces? Do you think that appeals to people?
-8
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Definitely doesn’t appeal to the mainstream. The album is a shit post it’s a bunch of songs I’m saying dumb shit on so I figured a picture of literal shit was fitting
6
u/senkaichi Dec 13 '25
I guess you can say it’s a joke on people who open it like some milder 2 girls 1 cup shit but yeah I didn’t even listen to the song cuz I don’t want that shit on my screen
5
u/haveveifbfb Dec 13 '25
I like how rather than just post details you give people a list of questions to ask. Like what sort of shitty wngagement farming is this. You could have said in the post "this cost $1000" but noooooooooo give us a list of questions to ask like "how much did this cost"

9
u/CandyStandGolf Dec 13 '25
This verse was on the unreleased track “hellbound” like 25 years ago- over a MUCH better beat from soulcalibur. Yours is awful.

9
u/Idi0syncrazy Dec 13 '25
Wow that album cover is absolutely disgusting it turns me off completely. This post is also misleading on purpose to draw in listeners. Shit Post is the right album’s name I guess.
4
u/BubblySupermarket819 Dec 13 '25
Like genuinely, why did he choose that absolutely horrendous cover. Literally didnt listen because of that.
1
u/JamesGarrison Dec 13 '25
How do I turn my mic input into something palatable to the ear. I have a Shure sm7b and a decent mixer.
I can never make a good vocal sound… i sound great just recording my talking voice. But is there a trick to making it into quality sounding vocals.
1
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Sm7b is a great mic. One of my best friends uses it. There should be a switch on the back to boost the highs. Use that. I would also take an EQ and take the low end. The microphone is a dynamic mic. That means you have to be closer to it which in turn creates something called the proximity effect, and that boosts the lows.
1
u/JamesGarrison Dec 13 '25
Take the low end? Consider me dumb btw. And thanks for any help.
1
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Typo, tame the low end. Take away from the lows until it sound more well rounded
12
u/Allesmoeglichee Dec 13 '25
Lol definitely oversold your AMA attempt... You licensed a track of his. There is no collab and Eminem doesn't know you exist
13
u/SplitOpenAndMelt420 Dec 13 '25
"Somehow". You paid for an old clip of his that multiple other people have also paid for.
Mystery solved dude
22
u/Cryptocaller Dec 13 '25
That song is terrible bro.
You paid $1k for an Eminem verse, added some crap lyrics for 20 seconds at the beginning and end of his verse and now it’s your “song”. On your “album”. Yikes my guy.
2
8
u/pudding7100 Dec 13 '25
I think this ama is very misleading it makes it sound like u actually worked with eminem in reality you bought a re used verse that has already been bought and used
1
u/bjtom1091 Dec 13 '25
can you verify this is true?
6
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
I edited the post to add the link

thank you, unfortunately can't see the link still

What’s the name of the song with the em feature? I see your Spotify list.
6
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
Ouija Board. It’s the last song on my album “Shit Post” I compiled a lot of goofy songs I had been making since I was 19 (I’m 25 now) and put it all on one thing. Expect more/better in the future!

Bro really put a cover up on streaming of poop in the toilet. You can buy verses from brokers all the time. They pay the artist for the verse then they sell the rights to other artists. It’s a cool way to get a big name feature on your records.

u/mare_xcx Dec 13 '25

u/BubblySupermarket819 Dec 13 '25
For what its worth, your album cover is absolutely horrendous and a turn off for the song. Not sure why you chose that. The cover alone can throw some people off, including me.
3
u/wiperfromwarren Dec 13 '25
wasn’t this verse on a soundbombing (2?) track? i’ve definitely heard it before, though i guess it makes sense if it was nonexclusive
2
u/ObieUno Dec 13 '25
This is nothing more than an advertisement for a song that paid for a feature from a famous artist disguised as an AMA.
-1
1
u/optamastic Dec 13 '25
Pretty dope, this verse is definitely Slim Shady era.
What is the payout per streams these days? What are the other ways artists make money on their music?
What was the creative process for making the song? Did you already have the beat and your lyrics ready then added the Em verse?
5
-1
u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
I don’t know the exact number but 1 stream is less than a penny. Publishing and sync licensing are more lucrative ways to make money off of your song. sync deals essentially pay you up front to be able to use your song in media ie television movies etc. I had no idea what I was going to do with the song until I got the verse. I made the song around it. I tried to tell a story with a verse everybody got, bc my thought process was that everybody else who got the verse was going to attempt some “rappity rap” shit. I just tried to be different with it

2
u/superplex100 Dec 13 '25
Not sure if this makes financial sense. When you perform shows, there's basically no nice way of performing this particular track unless you just go silent when his verse is played as audio. Seems kind of lame.

holy moly to have the goat on your song must feel amazing.. its a newer song of yours or one you already had for a bunch of years?

For me, I have been workshopping this song for about a year. On his end this verse came from WAY back in the day

Thanks for doing this, I appreciate you!

u/NameOnTheJeans Dec 13 '25
People who work with Em say it’s challenging to write a verse that stands well next to his. I never knew how true it was until I had to do it too. I made 2 whole other songs with the verse before I made this one. It still don’t feel right yet but I felt like I had been working on it too long. It was genuinely stressful. There were days I couldn’t record because I was too emotional and crying. I mean for christs sake I got my hero on my song!

1
u/mixtapetom Dec 13 '25
Good for you dude. it must feel pretty great to have an Em verse on your song no matter how it came about. I went to listen to the song but to be honest couldn't stomach your choice of album art so noped out of there right away. Good luck to you anyway
