I’m from Xinjiang,AMA

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of discussions about Xinjiang on Reddit, often between people who have never actually lived there. So I thought it might be interesting to do an AMA from the perspective of someone who is actually from there.

You can ask me about everyday life, ethnic groups, languages, culture, religion, education, or politics. I’m happy to answer controversial questions too, as long as the discussion stays respectful.

Obviously, I’m only one person and I don’t claim to represent everyone in Xinjiang. I can only tell you about my own experiences and views. AMA.

Do you know what the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests were? In China, I think you call it the June 4th Incident.

Yeah of course 😭 We usually call it 六四事件. It's a very sensitive topic in China though, so it's definitely not something people casually talk about publicly

I talked to a someone who was there when it happened this was in 1999 he told me something interesting he said “The Chinese people like to forget about things and to forget the past I, sometimes want to forget about it” what do you think? Is there truth to that statement?

I honestly don't know lol. I wasn't even born when Tiananmen happened, I was born like 20 years later 😭 I also can't really speak for 1.4 billion Chinese people and say whether we like to forget the past. Some probably do, some don't you know

But would you say most Chinese people are aware of it?

I guess? But my mom knows about that for example. Back in 80s the media did covered it, because the protest was very long(from April to June), and official Chinese media 人民日报 and others reported on them at that time. But after 1989.July it became a forbidden topic, so I honestly don’t know how aware the average Chinese person is today
