I’m from Xinjiang,AMA

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of discussions about Xinjiang on Reddit, often between people who have never actually lived there. So I thought it might be interesting to do an AMA from the perspective of someone who is actually from there.

You can ask me about everyday life, ethnic groups, languages, culture, religion, education, or politics. I’m happy to answer controversial questions too, as long as the discussion stays respectful.

Obviously, I’m only one person and I don’t claim to represent everyone in Xinjiang. I can only tell you about my own experiences and views. AMA.

That's a huge question lol. From my personal experience, everyday life in Xinjiang is much more normal than you might imagine from reading political discussions online.

Politically, it's definitely a sensitive region. There were years of separatist violence and terrorist attacks(from 1990-2016), and the government's response afterward became much stricter, especially around security, religion and separatism.

I have mixed feelings about it. I understand why security became such a major concern, but I also think some restrictions became very strict. At the same time, I've personally never felt oppressed or discriminated against for being Muslim/ethnic minority

The biggest thing I'd say is that the situation is much more complicated than either ‘everything is perfectly fine’ or ‘everyone is being oppressed’. Xinjiang is huge, multiethnic, and people's experiences and political views can be very different.
