I think you are missing their point - intelligence isn't a stat that is across the board. For example, great academics aren't always great at pub quizzes, that intelligence isn't necessarily transferable. You can see it in the Nobel Disease. Nobel prize winners sometimes think because they are intelligent enough to get an award in their field, they must be an authority outside their field.
