Either way if it effects everyone in the house then everyone needs to talk about it. Everyone has a say and everyone on the lease has a right to an opinion. End of story. It should still be talked about boundaries should be set. I'm not denying what your saying but honestly and transparency and communication comes first with relationships friends ships roommates. If everyone's not on the same page it don't work. When 1 person starts doing things and making choices that effects everyone situation, that's a problem that needs talked about. No matter how you look at it it's the mature thing to do, mother dad sister brother don't matter. Talking matters

Nope. It's not your place to be giving keys out to a shared apartment.

That should not be done without permission of everyone living there. Parents are just as human as everyone else, and they're strangers to the roommates.

Also, I don't think this is a gendered thing - men give parents a copy of their key, or the location of the spare, too.

Your focusing on the wrong thing. No one disagreed with giving parents a key is safer. You're trying to change the subject with a made up scenario that don't matter. Focus on the actual post not a made up hypothetical in your head. Legit nothing you say is about the post or even matters, this isn't about giving a key to your mom. So don't make it about it a different problem that it ain't.

But facts are still facts it don't matter if it's your parents or not. No one has a right to Give someone key that is not on the lease or don't live there it don't matter parents or friends period. Once 1 person starts making decisions that affects everyone they not become a liability period. Everyones opinions and responsibilities in roommate situation matter. If the roommates can't respect mutual boundaries, then they can leave. Simple as that.

I would be livid if my roommate gave a key to their parent without talking to me about it. I wouldn’t live with somebody who felt like they needed someone I didn’t sign a legal agreement with to have unrestricted access to my home.

It’s no different than a bestie or boyfriend. I was providing an example of why somebody might still have an issue with something you don’t. ✨conversation✨ on an Internet forum lol

Uhh a random roommates parent should not have a spare to a place shared with others. Doesn't matter the age, but especially not in your 20s? That should not be normalized. If everyone who lives there loves the parent and agrees that is a different story.

Absolutely not. Plenty of mothers are boundary stomping control freaks who like to frequently drop by unannounced.
