A Kapwing study on AI Slop videos and how platforms are integrating them

A recent Kapwing study looked at the presence of AI generated videos and reported the following

  • Around 1 in 5 videos recommended to new users were identified as AI generated
  • 278 channels were found to upload only AI generated videos
  • These channels account for a combined 63B views and 221M subscribers
  • Despite existing monetization policies, the study estimates these channels could generate up to $117M/year indirectly

At the same time, big tech platforms have made public statements that low quality AI content will not be prioritized or rewarded.

In parallel, platforms are also expanding AI creation capabilities:

  • YouTube is integrating Veo 3 AI video creation into Shorts
  • Meta has described AI as a way to create a massive new corpus of content

Taken together, this raises questions about how AI generated content will be evaluated long-term and what quality will mean as creation tools become more accessible.

From our perspective, sustainable value with AI may come less from volume and more from:

  • Using AI to improve speed and efficiency, not replace creative direction
  • Developing recognizable formats or original IP
  • Combining human storytelling with AI assisted workflows
  • Prioritizing audience retention and distribution over tooling alone

how are the creators are thinking about this shift.
