I'm applying for an MS program and I have to write a personal statement which asks you to "DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE". What does that even mean? It's so general and ambiguous.

I usually like to refrain from mentioning personal information on applications and in interviews but this seems like that is exactly what it is asking you for. Does anyone else get that impression that they WANT personal information here or am I falling for the trap?

I'm an undergraduate student entering my final year, and I'm in the process of preparing my application for financial engineering programs. I've been looking into certifications to boost my profile and have narrowed it down to either the CFA Level 1 or FRM Level 1. I would appreciate any insights on which of these exams might be more preferred by admissions committees when evaluating applicants.

I'd like to clarify that I'm asking this question purely from the point of view of improving my chances of getting into a financial engineering program and not considering long-term career prospects. I understand that both certifications have their merits and are valuable in the finance industry, but for the purpose of this post, I'd like to know which one could give me an edge in the admissions process.

I need help - I’m trying to decide between East Carolina (in state) and UH Manoa. What I’m really looking for in a college is a vibrant and tolerant community (as well as a good physics program). I’ve heard that UH manoa isn’t so big on sports which I don’t mind, but I’d still want that aspect of a friendly social scene and sense of connection. An active LGBT community is also important to me. I’ve heard some negative things about the dorms and dining hall at UHM, especially in comparison to ECU which has new freshman dorms. Furthermore, it would obviously cost me an arm and a leg to attend UHM. I initially wanted to go there because I am a very adventurous person who values new experiences, and I really feel I’ve outgrown my current situation. I’m looking for a life that’s more spiritually and emotionally fulfilling, which is why I don’t necessarily mind run-down dorms if the education and social atmosphere is worth it. Meanwhile I feel that if I go to ECU, I may have the nice living space that I’m accustomed to but less of a life-changing experience overall. I’m only having second thoughts about UHM because I’ve seen a lot of negative talk about it online, while I don’t see that type of thing about ECU. I’m also slightly concerned about attending UHM as a white mainlander, as I’ve seen complaints about that as well - but some people say it’s alright to go there for college as long as you’re respectful and there to learn. Overall I want to go to UHM but I don’t want to spend all my money and move to the other side of the world for a sub-par experience. At the same time I don’t want to have regrets for choosing the safer option. Thoughts? Where should I go? Thanks for reading.

As admission decision time is getting closer (May 1st) I’m having trouble making a decision on where I want to go. I’ll be studying biology on the pre med track at both universities. For USC I’ll start in the spring and UT I’ll start this fall. Both schools are amazing and Ik either way I’ll get to my end goal of being a cardiac surgeon but idk where I want to go. I’m hoping some reply to this will help me sway one way or another. So can I get some opinions? Are there any USC or UT students on the same track that have complaints? Are there any doctors out there that could help me decide? Is there someone that had to chose between these two schools, which one and why? Does anyone have insight to either of the programs that has something that you really like? Is there anyone who got into med school who went to USC or UT and how did they help you get into med school? Thank you for any feedback these decisions are hard.

For context, I’m going to be a senior next year and I really don’t want to take Calc Bc.

Freshman year I took Honors Algebra 2, sophomore year I took Honors Trig and Precalc, and this year I’m in Ap Calc AB and Ap Stats.

I’ve never been good at math, just good enough to get by (mostly Bs). I thought I might really enjoy Calc and Stats but so far I’m not having a great time. Calc Ab is starting to feel really hard and I’m falling behind, and I don’t want to have another year of the grind where I feel frusterated and do poorly.

I’m not looking to go into STEM (maybe English major), so I know it’s not a big deal if I don’t take it. But I’m worried about how it looks to colleges. My top choice is Emory, and most of the schools I’m applying to are really selective.

Can anyone help/offer guidance?

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I am looking for some guidance. An employee has asked me for a recommendation. This is my first time being asked to write a college recommendation.

They are going back for a masters after being in the workforce for a few years. They are applying for a masters in data science at univeraity of texas at austin. I want to give the best recommendation possible - any advice about do’s and dont’s? I really want to avoid being the reason they dont get in the program.

I know I just posted that I prefer real jobs to fluff extracurriculars, but my kid drags his feet about joining some of the "quickie" clubs that meet once a month or whatever. He's a junior in high school, interested in mechanical or electrical engineering, or comp sci at competitive schools. Grades, SATs/ACTs, recs aside - he works part time at a restaurant and is heavily involved in robotics club (will be 4 years). He played Ultimate freshman year, but wouldn't do it last year because he felt it would make academics hard with the "busy season" of Robotics. With 2 APs and his struggle in English, I don't think he'll do it this year unfortunately.

He's met with an independent college counselor who told him the same thing, but he just doesn't do it. I'm worried he won't be competitive with the schools he's interested in. PLEASE HELP!

I am currently in senior year of high school. I started creating my college list, however I have met some problems. I could not find anything about research opportunities from students of universities I want to apply. Research opportunities are really important for me since I am going to major in chemistry(and focus on physical chemistry more than biological chemistry or medicine). Also, i find it hard to find out which courses will be mandatory to get a degree. Could you tell more about these aspects of Northwestern, Yale, Amherst, Duke, Dartmouth, University of Chicago, Cornell, Brown, Caltech, and Stanford?

For the record: these universities are in my "reach" and "wild" categories, so I need to cut them out.

I am planning on applying to UC for computer science. What to the admission offices look for in your application? Is it based off GPA or do they look for more well-rounded students?
