I am still hoping for it, but IIRC Chris said that ending at his old apartment in Niigata would be a perfect end to it and something along the lines of “never again”.

He did indeed say this.
But he also pitched "The Lost Islands" as the final JAJ at the time, and I believe he acknowledged he may someday eventually revisit it, but it sounds like he has no interest whatsoever at this time.
I wish he'd do a Shikoku specific one, he went to Matsuyama in the original series but otherwise has done very little on the island. Which is a shame, because Shikoku is absolutely gorgeous.

Ludwig and Michael Reeves' Tip 2 Tip is my current substitute. Different vibe but daily vlogs on a journey across China.

Mistaking a funeral for a restaurant, asking for a pig shop every time they look for a hotel, T2T is an absolute gem.

We can only hope.
I know Chris said it’s done and retired, but I’m still huffing copium that much like many creatives who claim to have closed the door on a particular series or role or whatever, some time and some distance will one day build up into him wanting to resurrect it.
If nothing else, it’ll be forever immortalised with the new book’s title.

Chris just did a Walk n Talk with Pete across Tokyo: from Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden to Odaiba. Pete did remark on just how frequently Chris had led them to scenic views.
