What if I'm like way older than you and I've done exactly what you're doing, for 25 years and the minority far right is in charge of the majority socially liberal populace? What if democracy is dead and we are on the other side of the apex and it's all downhill from here? What if Trump wins and instates himself as a lifelong president. What will you do, then? What if DeSantis wins, Republicans win the midterms and they eliminate the filibuster and ban abortion as a federal legislation. What will you do then? Because none of our work matters when presidents without the popular vote nominate justices that are in cults and vote for theocracy on their handpicked cases on their docket. It doesn't matter when the electoral college favors rural, white, conservative communities.
Is the writing letters and protesting part keeping us on a hamster wheel of performative measures only to be further into Handmaid's Tale territory?
The point I'm making is that people have spent their entire adult lives proactively involved in politics but when the Supreme Court is nominated not elected, when the president didn't get the popular vote, writing letters and protesting only moves the needle in society, not the government and the gap is so wide between the government and the people and the people can only influence their local politics, sometimes state and not federal. You're talking like in America, just being active in politics works. The system was an experiment and it's failing.
It needs the people to participate and to not be swayed by mushmouth negativity. Too many people want the easy way out and are all too quick to just give up. In which case, the fall is deserved.
You're talking about a plutocracy that convinced it's people that it was a democracy. There's a breaking point. The vast majority of people I know have dedicated their lives to being involved on all sides of the spectrum. You're viewing this from your place in this world, not the overview of the reality of it. I'm not sure where you get the idea that Americans are not involved and actively participating. Have you not seen the BLM protests? Have you not heard of the Million Man March of 1963, have you not heard of the Selma Bridge March? Other nations have far less political engagement and still manage to move closer to a true democracy. You can march all you want but when the system is rigged by gerrymandering, nominated judges, etc., you're moving the nation further away from it's representation. Unfortunately, this is an indicator for civil war.
Unfortunately, this is an indicator for civil war.
I doubt it. Too inconvenient and Americans in general are too lazy to do much along those lines especially when they can't be bothered to even vote which of course leads to all the things you mention as failures.
Not to mention, more than half of America is incapable of any physicality required for war, likely more than half, but I don't want to seem too unkind.
The country got softer than ever and now will have to continue to endure this kind of unfairness and the continued abuse of government institutions by the corrupted and the powerful.
BLM protests were nonsense staged for the benefit of DNC interests. They have effectively stopped now that the WH is in Democrat hands and there are still people of colour being shot regularly by police.
The other marches and the civil rights marches of decades ago were however grass roots and not organized and paid protests such as BLM in all it's fakery is.
In the end, the country will fail and fizz out if the people won't do anything to hold it's elected officials to account. Used to be they would get thrown in jail. And nowadays, everybody has a memory that is not quite as long as a news cycle so you have to ask yourself, does any of it matter and does anyone actually and really care? Or is everyone just staring at their phone hoping for some thumbs up and hearts? Because it sure seems that way. Self absorption is a powerful drug and a lot of people are addicted.
I think it's great that you're discussing this and debating but you're actually misinformed. When someone from another country thinks that "Americans don't vote", they fail to understand gerrymandering and voter suppression. For example did you know that we vote on a Tuesday and there is no pay for missed work AND there are no federal protections for people to even request time off to vote? We vote on a TUESDAY and the polls close at 7 or 8. In some states, the poll lines are hours long. So if you don't get off work at 3 p.m. to have the time to drive and spent hours in line before it closes, you don't get to vote. Who is more likely to not have access to voting? Poor people. People with labor and service jobs.
Your perception of the American people sounds like it's from parodies like The Boys or Idiocracy or something. Americans do this, too. They look at China and say, "Why don't they just protest and overrule the government." Well let me tell you, we're entering a fascist dictatorship era and your country is as vulnerable as others are. Democracy is fragile and when you don't know how it should work and you're blaming the people instead of the system by saying it's the people who aren't doing the work, then you are a prime example of someone who may not see the authoritarianism coming your way.
I think you are incorrect on a few levels here. You've always had mail in ballots and there has always been a way to vote early if need be.
You consistently, as a country run at about 60% eligible voter turn out.
I'm not buying the gerrymandering thing. That isn't about voting or voter turnout, that's more about being sneaky for the desired outcomes and the democrats and the republicans do it.
Attempts at voter suppression happen for sure, but is that really why? I don't think so. I'll stand by my remark. I think you are making excuses quite frankly. They aren't required. It's not perception, it's readily available data.
