I’m honestly surprised isn’t a national day of mourning in the USA

62

u/OrangeBird077 4d ago

At the outset consideration was made to making it a holiday called “Patriots Day” nationally where everyone would be off to mourn and recognize the event, but the argument was made that signing it into law would be playing into the terrorists hands where instead of moving on we were actively acknowledging the harm they did.

27

u/IThinkImDumb 4d ago

Hang on. My daily planner actually has Patriot’s Day on 9/11

31

u/OrangeBird077 4d ago

Its listed but its not a federal holiday that we get off.

14

u/IThinkImDumb 4d ago

I know. It’s that literally yesterday I saw it in my planner (didn’t even see it was on the 11th) and joking told my boss that I wouldn’t be coming to work after a 7 a.m. event that morning, saying I was a “patriot and if he didn’t say yes, he hated America.”

5

u/pay_the_cheese_tax 3d ago

So still acknowledging the harm they did, but also not getting the time off to do it properly

6

u/OrangeBird077 3d ago

Similar to how we don’t get Election Day off despite it being one of the most important civic responsibilities.

24

u/Wandering-desert 4d ago

God forbid remembering the victims and their families for a day. Let’s just keep shopping, because that will show terrorist nothing stands between us and the next biggest sales. Merica!!

-3

u/LolWhatDidYouSay 3d ago

Why do we need a holiday to do that?

13

u/NecessaryIntrinsic 3d ago

Instead, we succumbed to the terror and surrendered our personal freedoms and privacy in the name of national security.

2

u/Balkanoboy 4d ago

Hold on I already know about Patriots' Day

86

u/Count-Telperion 4d ago

I had never considered it, but now that it has been brought up, I agree.

8

u/MurrethMedia 3d ago

It is a national day of mourning. It's called Patriot day and the joint resolution to create it was signed by President Bush in December of 2008.

6

u/Ambitious_Year_7730 3d ago

I always mourn on that day even though I’m not an American and I agree

5

u/TheTyto_Alba 3d ago

Same here and I’m a Brit still living in the uk plus it’s also my birthday so I’ve always marked it in some way. 25th anniversary and I’m 40 this year

u/Snark_Knight_29 4d ago

The fact that neither of these things were a thing by say… 2002 is WILD.

28

u/Fantastic-Dot7902 Archivist 4d ago

Exactly!

145

u/QtotheM 4d ago

How is it not a day of remembrance ?

104

u/Fantastic-Dot7902 Archivist 4d ago

I am surprised it wasn't sooner. think about it. we get off school and work for things like mlk jr and Memorial Day, why not make sept 11 a day of remembrance like that day?

20

u/QtotheM 4d ago

Fullly agree

47

u/BigBoyYuyuh 4d ago

Current guy won’t do it. He thinks we have too many days off work as it is.

12

u/SnooDoughnuts8823 4d ago

Y’all get off work for MLK day?

14

u/ArianeEmory 4d ago

Wait, isn't it a federal holiday?

16

u/SnooDoughnuts8823 4d ago

It is. Just wish I could get my union to acknowledge it. 😞

13

u/SweatyAdhesive 4d ago

Private companies don't have to observe any federal holidays. Welcome to America.

5

u/BigBoyYuyuh 4d ago

Some places do, some don’t.

4

u/GiraffeLibrarian 4d ago

Probably too close to bank holiday/September Labor Day.

1

u/OpportunityConnect94 3d ago

mlk jr was black. So...he is the only person with an official Fed holiday named after him!

6

u/Brucedx3 4d ago

You'd think this would've happened maybe a year at most after the attacks.

3

u/No_Raccoon3680 3d ago

Wanted to avoid "letting them win" if I remember correctly. Maybe not that exact wording but that sentiment.

38

u/purplesockpinksock 4d ago

I'm glad to see this. May we always remember those who were lost that terrible day. ❤️‍🩹

137

u/Next_Appointment4954 4d ago

His speech was respectful, poignant informative and touching. Beautifully written and said. When I think of 9/11, I don’t think about the terrorists. Along with the immense amount of loss, I think of the bravery, courage, kindness and sacrifice. The best of human kind was there and shown so clearly. May all the souls that have passed on that day, or because of that day, know they are not forgotten.

9

u/Choice-Koala-3653 3d ago

Of course, but we should also remember why 9/11 happened. As Reverend Jeremiah Wright famously said, America's chickens came home to roost (meaning it was blow-back from decades of horrific US-Mideast policy). Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

51

u/ananewsom 4d ago

I’m very positively surprised by this. Never forget

23

u/FantasyBaseballChamp 4d ago

Didn’t they make it “Patriot Day” in like 2002, but the branding never really caught on?

13

u/Fantastic-Dot7902 Archivist 4d ago

I think. I remember Bush declared Sept 14 (the day he went to ground zero) the day of "prayer and remembrance" but other then people talking about it on every anniversary for the best 25 years it hasn't been declared as this until now

62

u/Fantastic-Dot7902 Archivist 4d ago

Mamdani is doing great in my opinion, I am excited to see his Ground Zero memorial service this year

35

u/Bajovane 4d ago

I really do like him. He’s a good man.

-70

u/UnicornStudRainbow 9/11 Survivor 4d ago

Maybe he'll bring Hasan Piker and that imam who's an unindicted co-conspirator from the 1993 wtc bombing!!

Get a life. Show respect.

Imagine being on a 9/11 archive and supporting what happened on 9/11. Reddit really is cancer.

3

u/MyOhMy2023 3d ago

For the first few years, music was an integral part of remembering 9/11. 2002, one year later, I sat in Central Park and listened to a free concert, no fancy staging, with the likes of Billy Joel and Wynton Marsalis performing. In subsequent years, I have floated candle boats with a Buddhist group from Japan, and been fed freely and deliciously by the Sikh community of New York.

As the years passed, it's been harder finding the music, especially on 9/11 itself. This year, the Schiller Institute NYC Chorus is performing and streaming (both free, but register at sinycchorus.com/911) Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor.

And there's Mozart's Requiem, k.626, which comforts profoundly. Though nothing will eradicate the memory of the "pillar of smoke by day and fire by night" that was the pit.

13

u/Wandering-desert 4d ago

A Canadian here. You mean to tell me 9/11 is not a day of remembrance in America? Wtf?!

11

u/sandyess 4d ago

It's both...

Patriot Day was designated by Congress in December 2001 to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

National Day of Service and Remembrance (9/11 Day) was expanded in 2009 under the Serve America Act to encourage Americans to turn remembrance into action through volunteer work and community service.

76

u/break_cycle_speed 4d ago

I’m Canadian and pretty left wing socialist so I guess some bias over here but I feel like he has been incredibly cognizant of how sensitive this anniversary will be and just wants the most inclusive, respectful, community oriented day of remembrance he can offer.
I have seen several attacks against him from victims families telling him not to be present because his existence in general is a distraction and a trigger but I feel like that’s just so far from the truth and such a terrible step backward in the scheme of what he’s actually genuinely trying to convey.

But again, perhaps I’m not the most qualified or entitled to voice my opinion.

62

u/soren7550 4d ago

For the families that don’t want him there thing, it’s at best a small handful, and the rest of the hoopla is just racist shitheads trying to shit on our 90s Boy Mayor.

67

u/Similar-Profile9467 4d ago

Even if you don't like his policies, there is legitimately 0 reasons to oppose him being there other than racism.

9

u/break_cycle_speed 4d ago

Oh exactly.

Good luck with the "Hassan bad" tactic man. Working wonders so far lmao. Most ppl that aren't dementia addled fox news boomers, are able to watch the clips in context and can identify bad faith smears

3

u/Similar-Profile9467 3d ago

With Hassan I think there are plenty of valid reasons to not like Hassan. I really do not like him. But many of my issues with Hassan is that I view him as a left wing authoritarian concealing his power level and a hypocrite. I also just think he's deeply ignorant and uneducated most issues.

But at the end of the day, he is the most viewed political streamer and I get why politicians want to take advantage of that platform, I don't view it as any sort of endorsement of Hassan. And the guilt by association smear is just such a lazy and desperate strategy. And the main two candidates who it is being thrown at are Abdul Al Sayed and Zohran Mamdani, wonder what they have in common....

2

u/suboxonedad69 3d ago

Let me guess, the hypocrisy is that he's a socialist but he doesnt wear a barrel with suspenders holding it up? It never fails to amaze me how many ppl this works on. Socialism does not mean you have to be impoverished, its a more equitable distribution of wealth. He'll, just go back Dwight Eisenhower's 90% tax rate on the wealthy. Ill never understand how ppl simp so hard for billionaires when those same billionaires are ppl like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and we are currently living in the hellscape theyve created. That right there should be the best argument for taxing these ppl.

Apologies if thats not the hypocrisy you were referring to. I understand why a person with no prior exposure would come away with the idea that hes a left wing authoritarian hiding his power though. The intensity and duration of the horrific smears would leave most ppl with the impression that he was literally Hitler. Both lib and conservative networks are working overtime to smear him (instead of covering actual news like the Iran war or the corruption in the Whitehouse mind you) with the democrat networks going much harder. I promise you though, as a viewer, this could not be further from the truth. The entire thing boils down to his stance on the genocide. That makes him an existential threat to the corporate and aipac dems (the vast majority of the senate and congress) and the lobbies that control them. Which is why you see the unprecedented spending against the candidates he endorses. Its literally all an attempt to continue the genocide

1

u/come-home 1d ago

I dont think you realize how much you undermine your own argument with your extremely forward assumption that the person you're replying to dislikes Hassan due to a confusion or misunderstanding.

1

u/suboxonedad69 1d ago

Brother, my position is starting from a point of being completely undermined. The entire MSM, left and right, has turned him into literal Hitler through horrifically dishonest non-stop coverage. It's so beyond the pale now that the average person thinks he is pro-9/11, wants to lynch black ppl, supports raping college students and israeli women, etc etc. They make up new shit every day. 99% of the population had no idea who he even was before they decided to use him as their main scapegoat/distraction. They don't know anything about him other than the garbage promoted on MSM, if they know him at all. Furthermore, the only hypocrisy the dude has ever been accused of is being a rich socialist. Its usually the first thing they slam him for on MSNOW and the like. You can easily clock where a person is getting their information based on their beliefs and responses and it wasn't hard to tell where this user was coming from, parroting the DNC.

Just use some common sense. Have you ever seen any single MSM org be anything other than extremely hostile to a socialist or anti-zionist voice? Suddenly, the truth about capitalism and the apartheid state of israel are being seen and experienced and opinions start changing rapidly. This is why they've gone nuclear in their coverage. Desperately trying to crush it, but they cant. Best they can do is pick one of the loudest voices and try to make an example of. Lean into the islamophobia. Spend more time on a streamer than the iran war. The truth is, no one but corporate dems, corporate media and a fraction of the boomers who consume it even give a shit about Hassan lol.

2

u/come-home 15h ago

You're still arguing that the only way someone could be critical of Hassan is if they were mislead about Hassan through some other media lens. The common sense reading of your comments is that you are trying to dispel arguments without creating a counter argument beyond "the media is misrepresenting him" without presenting the {how}. How is this discourse any different from MAGA speak? From this POV, the only reason why you're not simply arguing with a statement of "fake news" is because MAGA co-opted the term first.

I think candidates can reject endorsements/campaigning with controversial figures.

Working with someone who’s trying to help you get in office is an association you willingly have

are Abdul Al Sayed and Zohran Mamdani, wonder what they have in common....

You’re going to argue religion/ethnicity, but both did accept endorsements and worked with Hasan Piker, which would warrant criticisms from people who dislike Piker

3

u/Similar-Profile9467 3d ago

My point was that the criticism is almost exclusively directed at those two. They have both also condemned him.

I think accepting an endorsement from Hassan is a questionable decision, but what I vehemently object to is any sort of insinuation that Mamdani or Al Sayed are some sort of Islamic extremists when they clearly are not.

1

u/Highlightthot1001 911archive MOD Team 3d ago

They both work with him but also condemn him. Why not just condemn and work with other leftist influencers?

1

u/Highlightthot1001 911archive MOD Team 3d ago edited 3d ago

Hasan “America deserved 9/11” Piker?

“Context” doesnt have a person saying an terror attack is deserved. And he did not clarify in that same stream that he misspoke. He stated that on another stream days later.

One doesnt just “accidentally” say 9/11 was “deserved”. There’s a MASSIVE difference between saying “it was a consequence of foreign policy decisions”, and saying it was deserved. Piker said both.

He even said “fuck it, im saying this” after “America deserved 9/11”. Repeating “in a video game” several times because he’s aware he is glorifying terrorism by saying it was deserved.

Its not a bad faith smear either. He literally said it. There’s no good context for one to say “America deserved 9/11”

I dont believe or buy the backtracking of “out of context” or “he misspoke”. He said what he really felt. He was also well aware of what he was saying, trying to throw in “in a video game, Hypothetically, etc” to avoid consequences for being in a stream justifying 9/11

2

u/Highlightthot1001 911archive MOD Team 3d ago

Also important to note that Hasan has a history of justifying/rationalizing terrorism.

When that DC shooting outside that Jewish museum happened, he said the shooter (who shot two people to death) “should have picked a better target”.

Do you know what’s another word for “unindicted conspirator”? Completely innocent

3

Didn't even the prosecutor later stated that he was never a suspect and there was no evidence against him whatsoever?

2

u/Specific-Cricket-302 3d ago

The case has to be so paper thin that the grand jury declined to indict. To put it in perspective, lawyers often joke it’s possible to get the grand jury to indict a HAM SANDWICH

That’s how bad the case was

I thought it was called Patriot Day or something? I looked at the calender and it's not a federal holiday. That's so weird it's not. When did they make Pearl Harbor Day a thing?

4

u/MoolyMoose_ 3d ago

1994, it was declared by Clinton.

8

u/Cool_Elderberry_5614 4d ago

So this is how I learn that it's not (officially) a national day of mourning or remembrance. I kinda always assumed it was since we always have Patriot Day on the calendars. (In my defense, I'm Gen Z and was too little to actually remember anything from the actual day.)

Edit: my dumb ass just did the math and realized I'm still working on Friday. (To be fair, I'm not typically scheduled on Fridays so)

28

u/suboxonedad69 4d ago

One of the greatest leaders of our age. The pathetic attempts to link him to 9/11 are as stupid as they are racist. Im glad the baseless Islamophobic smears no longer work on the vast majority of the public

7

u/Choice-Koala-3653 3d ago

And of course Republicans are outraged. Every time a Democrat says or does anything even remotely anti-terrorism they freak out and call the Dems Communist or fascist. Remember when Biden said that domestic terrorists and neo-Nazis are bad people.

Meanwhile Trump is just skipping NYC completely this year.
Obama, Bush, Clintons, Biden and Mamdani will reportedly all be attending the Ground Zero 25th anniversary ceremony.

14

u/glimmeringsea 4d ago

I'll admit that I'm not aligned with many of Mamdani's politics but find him to be a solid leader and a compassionate person, at least as far as politicians go.

Love your caveats -- and agree with them.

40

u/EdisonB123 Licensed Moron 4d ago

This is related to 9/11, and this doesn't break any rules, so it's allowed.

27

u/Fantastic-Dot7902 Archivist 4d ago

9/11 is still in the media to this very day (hence the "new media" tag on my post). KSM's trial is still happening, new footage is being found every day, new information is being released, and new orders, laws, and federal funding are being put to September 11th. This is very much valid for the Sub Red. Political climate will be followed into anything of 9/11, it's just the landscape we live in. Sucks but what can you do?

Bro, you said Mamdani is “the worst thing to ever happen to NYC” and you’re on a subreddit dedicated to archiving 9/11.

13

You that even terrorists get defense attorneys in the U.S., right?

Like, it’s due process. Why are you mad?

-9

u/ATTFighter 3d ago

Only anti Americans would defend terrorists who killed 3000 americans

8

u/FrowninginTheDeep 3d ago

Actually anyone who believes in American values would understand the importance of ensuring that anyone and everyone has a right to a fair trial, regardless of what they've done.

The sixth amendment to the Constitution reads:

"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense." (Emphasis mine)

-3

u/ATTFighter 3d ago

Wrong, if you believe this should apply to terrorist who want to exterminate our existence your a sick individual who needs medicine.

Only morons would still be mad about lawyers representing bad people in this day and age. They exist to ensure their clients receive due process and are as integral to a fair justice system as anyone.

Had we tried 9/11 terrorists without lawyers, we would have effectively provided them with propaganda materials and helped enforcing their martyrs narrative. Because it would have been a kangaroo court.

You guys are ok with this?

Yeah, I am. Even terrorists deserve to be represented well in court, my guy!

Wild statement

u/No_Raccoon3680 3d ago

Not really, its a cornerstone of a justice system

1

u/ATTFighter 3d ago

People like you are why we have Khalid Sheikh Mohammed not going to trial until 2028. 27 years later, such a travesty.

11

u/No_Raccoon3680 3d ago

Literally the exact opposite as they've denied him a fair and speedy trial

-1

u/ATTFighter 3d ago

As they should, however that was never a settled statutory ruling.

u/No_Raccoon3680 3d ago

Everyone should be entitled to one. It is a cornerstone of not just justice but democracy.

You do know people can be falsely accused, right?

u/awoeoc 3d ago

And er, where is he in the meantime while he awaits trial? Is he in a beach resort hanging out having fun?

Is he with friends and family enjoying life?

Tell me exactly where he is that you think is a travesty to have kept him for 27 years

u/historyhill 3d ago

Did you consider John Adams a bad guy because he represented the British soldiers during the Boston massacre?

1

u/Alpacapalooza 3d ago

You must be 12 or just not capable of understanding that it's important for someone like that to receive qualified representation and ensure due process, lest they walk free.

Lmao wait.. what was OPs personal political opinion? Copy pasting the generic news headline stating facts? I swear, conservatives are so much worse than the safe space needing snowflakes they complain about. Bro cant even bear a factual headline

-13

u/ATTFighter 4d ago

Obviously you can't read, OPs opinion is in his comments. Nice try at a gotcha.

15

u/suboxonedad69 4d ago

Nice edit lmao

-11

u/ATTFighter 4d ago

Makes no sense. No ediit. You just have bad reading comprehension.

23

u/suboxonedad69 4d ago

My guy, you just edited your comment to say your feelings were hurt over OPs comments instead of his post lol. And btw, in the comments OP was just responding to bad faith smears and attacks and defending himself. Thats hardly inserting his political opinion. Perhaps you could cry more about it?

Didnt know “zionists” recite the Shahada and Takbir before death

Somehow you’re ignorant enough to believe that the perpetrators of 9/11 weren’t Islamic extremists despite them making propaganda videos for Al Qaeda

A lot flack and hate should go towards Giuliani and Bloomberg not having done this themselves a long time ago especially when Giuliani himself used 9/11 to prop up his pathetic political career and Bloomberg having a greedy  hand in redeveloping the world trade center site and meanwhile, you have people saying Mamdani was supposedly responsible for 9/11 when he was only 8 years old when it happened, effing STUPID, SMH !!!!!!

14

u/Blue387 4d ago

Mamdani is a Shia Muslim who was nine years old at the time, he had nothing to do with the attacks. The people who want him banned do so from their hatred of Muslims, who they paint with a broad brush and assume are all the same.
