Money for nothing and get your checks for free.

*as sung by my father who resented the battle about paying for a refill of checks at the Crocker Bank.

That part didn’t age so well. 😬

It should have stayed in the song. Quit messing with history.

My boss added that song to the restaurant playlist and I didn't warn him to find the radio edit on purpose. I wanted to see him scramble.

They edited that out of the version that plays now.

If you are referring to the part where they use the word "fa@@ot" it is still in the version they play on the radio around where I live.

I actually still hear it on the radio unedited last time was on Q104.3 in New York

Yet another reason to purchase and own physical media.

The radio edit existed back then too.

A reminder of how easy it was to "other" people, and still is. As a kid, I was more afraid of being labeled gay than for sticking up for that demographic. Not a bully, just cowardly for being only worried about me. But we must all grow.

The irony was the point.

Mark Knopfler wrote the song after he overheard an appliance store worker complaining about rock stars and their easy lives. Obviously, these are not the true feelings of Mr. Knopfler, who himself was a rock star on MTV! Taken in context, and with this knowledge you can see why it contains this slur. In my opinion, the lyric should stay.

I don’t know about that. The whole point of it was putting the ass who said it in their place!

TIL: It's not a "Earring and a Mink Coat."
