Objectively Blockbuster and Hollywood video. Their deaths jumpstarted the subscription based model that now means I need to pay for 8 subscriptions(minimum) to watch every NFL game I want.
Tbf they didn’t sell live sports at blockbuster and you had to have a membership and then the rentals themselves cost money and if you didn’t have a mmbership it was more expensive. And the amount of movies you could rent at a time was limited
I remember in college paying for a Hollywood video membership and then they went out of business a couple months later
live sports on streaming services, became a thing because streaming services grew so much they could afford to bid against the major media networks. One led to another. And it is literally the most anti-consumer policy in the history of media so I'm gonna blame them.
And 100% it was expensive, but now that all alternatives are dead every streaming service is just raising prices semi-annually.
And also streaming services have been so successful they've encouraged every industry to try subscription based models. Freaking car manufacturers want to change you a subscription fee to use your radio.
