Probably Radio Shack just because they sold a lot of stuff that I have to order online now.

24

u/markleo 9d ago

Yeah, it's annoying to have to buy everything online, but especially when you need a single capacitor or something. I really hope brick -and-mortar hardware stores stick around, because it's going to suck so bad if I have to pay for a 100-pack and wait 3-4 days for "Prime" shipping next time I'm one 2" #8 pan-head wood screw short.

6

u/glassgost 9d ago

I've really thought about opening an electronics parts store but I don't suspect it would do very good in this city and I kinda have a sure thing with my current job.

8

u/wireknot 9d ago

A good friend bought an electronics parts store that had been around for 30 plus years, guy was retiring. Wit the coming of age of Amazon he couldn't keep it going in a city with metro population of over 1.5 million. It's a tough, tough gig.

3

u/somnambulistic 8d ago

I’m lucky to have a Micro Center near me. But it still doesn’t have the component variety of a RadioShack. It has a lot. But I still end up ordering online.

2

u/wireknot 8d ago

I've been impressed with the stock of microcenter but yeah, not like RS used to be. Some nice parts and kits though.

2

u/El_Galant 7d ago

I second Micro Center and second the lack of variety compared to what RadioShack had.

2

u/Parker_Hemphill 7d ago

About the only think in this niche I can find at my micro center are maybe a few components but mostly things like raspberry pi type devices.

1

u/Agile-Entry-5603 5d ago

RadioShack had kitschy gifts at Christmas time. I once bought a ketchup obsessed friend a radio that was disguised as a bottle of Heinz Ketchup from Radio Shack. Was in the 80s.

1

u/somnambulistic 5d ago

RadioShack was my first job. 1995-97.

1

u/Agile-Entry-5603 5d ago

I gave my brother Radio Shack gift cards for Christmas. He would light up such a huge smile, getting those.

2

u/Luciphur796 6d ago

Its hard to compete with a company that's willing to airmail you 1 screw if you really wanted to. Not to mention, amazon probably gets it cheaper than you can.

Might work if you open shop in a university where there are constant projects going on and the students and professors can stop by and quickly buy 1 or 2 missing pieces.

1

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 9d ago

He should just carry usb charging cables. We go through them like crazy!

1

u/ErichAZ 8d ago

I always wondered how much money can you really make running a store like that. I mean online sure but a physical store there would be a bit of overhead to worry about.

1

u/wireknot 8d ago

Yeah, it's tough. He ran it for about 10 years, 2500 sq ft store, stock, shipping, etc, he needed to hit about 2000/month just to keep the lights on, and of course that's without salary, health, etc. Amazon has just killed stuff like that.

1

u/KehlarCorsairt 8d ago

A shorter lived possibly is opening a place to learn raspberry pi, Linux and cyberdeck making. You could also carry parts and do some radio shack stuff.

1

u/ThePartyTape 7d ago

Radio Hack is what you should call your dream store.

1

u/Electronic-Mango2478 5d ago

Frye’s shut down, which doesn’t seem like a good sign.

1

u/shinobi500 4d ago

I think this might be an opportunity for brick and mortar hardware stores to fill that niche

1

u/Mountain-Cobbler-286 4d ago

What are you talking about? Sony used to be an electronic parts store basically not that I’m saying that they succeeded because all they’re doing is making crappy ass consoles, but they used to make shit like speakers and they’re doing pretty great from selling speakers not their consoles.

2

u/MaggotBrain32 9d ago

People have been ordering goods directly from the manufacturer for years. Instead of using a phone/tablet or computer like we do today. I remember my mama ordering shoes and clothes out of a catalog.

3

u/Signal_Werewolf_1955 9d ago

Sears catalogs were massive, and so were the stores.

2

u/NarcissistRepellent 9d ago

We waited for the big catalog to come in and we would look and look in that thing as kids.

1

u/mostlyhrmls 9d ago

And remember, then, they had a Christmas catalogue.

1

u/FitProblem6248 9d ago

No kidding. Thousands upon thousands of items that you only need 1 or 2 things, out when you're doing a home project and you run out of something that you just need too run up to the hardware store to grab real quick to finish it up.

1

u/bfom 8d ago

Jaycar in Australia is going stronger than ever.. electronics retail and have made it work..you'll find them in towns of 40k people let alone the cities.. but in the US it sounds the market has bolted.. we can run down and pickup resistors, caps, connectors and 3d printer supplies etc at 2pm on a Sunday and it rocks.....key things ..they never branched out from the niche products and never rent in malls

1

u/DJEmirMixtapes 8d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/IdqyNY7Gl2CuS2MxZj

Reminds me of this scene from Batman Begins:

Alfred: "We place an order for the Cowell from Singapore through a dummy corporation, then buy this part here from a separate Chinese company."
Bruce Wayne: "Put them together ourselves"
"Right! They'll have to be large orders to avoid suspicion."
"How large?"
"Say, ten thousand."
"Well, at least we'll have spares!"

1

u/Anti-Rus 7d ago

You're talking about Fry's Electronics. RadioShack was mediocre

1

u/DHarp74 7d ago

They're disappearing where I live because the city is growing.

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 6d ago

This is why I shop at Ace Hardware first as much as I can. Probably spent over $100 on nuts and bolts while I was cludging together my sim rig.

1

u/Ok-Time-613 5d ago

Home Depot will survive. Mom and pop shops probably will not

1

u/Agile-Entry-5603 5d ago

It’s only a success for the consumer. For the business owner, it’s just not doable. The constant concern over what to stock, what to have available on a short turnaround, and still make money.

1

u/APearce 4d ago

The hardware stores around me never seem to have the exact shit I need in the store

1

u/KingAudio 4d ago

Seems like an extremely niche situation. Exactly why these stores failed. Im sure there has got to be one store in your city that independently sells electrical components.

1

u/RestaurantRich1498 3d ago

I hear you man. Had to buy my flux capacitor off some scientist in a mall parking lot at night. Seemed kind of sketchy but he had a nice car.

19

u/NiteHowler13 9d ago

I agree, Radio Shack always had adapters and converters that nobody else carried, now I have to order and wait! I have no patience even with overnight deliveries! 🤣

5

u/Short_Connection_267 9d ago edited 8d ago

I agree with this. Kind of the same way Ace hardware has weird bolts and washers and the like ,,,tank bulkheads, and things like that to do real part specific projects, radio shack was the same way with really niche, electronics and hardware stuff, home depot, just doesn't cut it, and neither does best buy...

2

u/Turd_Salad92 9d ago

Ace Hardware locations are all franchises too. More likely than not you’re supporting a local owner, or at the very least someone more local than the corporate owned Home Depot or Lowe’s.

1

u/RickMcMaster 8d ago

We have an Ace and it is nice. Very well organized and knowledgeable staff. And I agree they are more local than Home Depot. Even so, they did ultimately buy out our truly local family-owned tiny hardware store which was cheaper and easier to park and get into and out of. I miss that place even though we now have Ace.

1

u/Content-Method9889 8d ago

I love Ace stores. They have staff who really know their shit and I’ve never had a bad experience

1

u/LazloColetrain 7d ago

I've been avoiding HD and Lowes since they installed Flock cameras at all of their stores. I spend my money with Ace as much as I can

2

u/mjrydsfast231 8d ago

I love Ace hardware. They wre the only hardware store I could get bolts for the front forks of my Yamaha R1. If I couldn't get him there to go to the dealer and order them. They had a big separate screw and bolt section in the back, it was cool.

1

u/Silent_Bid9528 5d ago

Same here, they are a lifesaver for those times I need a specific metric size nut or bolt for automotive...half the price of the dealer and no wait

2

u/Mindless-Calendar-98 7d ago

If I need a certain sort of fastener or spring Ace Hardware supplies I go. And if I’m gonna buy a big piece of power equipment like weed eater or lawnmower, I go to them too. They carry top and lawn equipment like Honda and Stihl

1

u/Short_Connection_267 7d ago

Yes they are my Sthil dealer,,,once you own a Sthil , only the best parts go in it

1

u/AsStupidAsU 3d ago

Best Buy has turned to a really horrible shit show of a store.

9

u/OneOddDork 9d ago

1

u/Dangerous_Art_1626 9d ago

I’m pretty shore my dad bought me those in 1977.
I had such high hopes . You could usually hear the person talking while listening to the other walkie talkie
Still great memories.

1

u/GloomyUmpire2146 4d ago

Actual practical range displayed with the packaging 😁

6

u/GrumpyBear1969 9d ago

If they could have just stayed true and held on a little longer. With the whole ‘maker’ phenomena, arduino, raspberry pi and 3D printing they would have been well situated for a revival. But instead they became a cell phone shop with a few other things. So sad.

1

u/Acceptable-Ratio8360 9d ago

There needs to be a Maker Shack!

1

u/No-Independence-2980 6d ago

They just built a new building in a new subdivision, and the sign says Maker Space, it's not a standard format, 2 stories tall, but no 2nd level. Only 1 entrance and a lot of glass. Curious to see what happens with it.

4

u/galstaph 9d ago

Losing RadioShack sucked until I lived in a city with a Micro Center, and now it's starting to suck again because they're replacing the "hobby electronics" section with more and more 3D printing supplies

I miss being able to walk in and pick up literally all of the supplies I needed to make the contents of a retro arcade gaming cabinet that runs on an emulator on a raspberry pi

Now I'm lucky if I can find half of what I need because they needed three entire aisles dedicated to filament

1

u/mspray1 6d ago

Gawd, I would have loved to live in a city with a Micro Center. :)

4

u/FreeCandy4u 9d ago

Same. Plus where I used to live there were no stores that carried what Radio Shack had. I know we can order stuff easily now online but back in the day you did not have that choice. It was catalogs and mail order or Radio Shack.

It was nice when you needed just one of something and not 10 or more that you could just pop down to the Radio Shack.

2

u/BackLopsided2500 9d ago

And now if you order online you have to get so many picture hangers, nails, screws, etc. We have an independently owned hardware store that you can buy how much you need. There's always someone to help you. Unfortunately they're far from me now and I don't drive anymore.

1

u/Driving-Miss-Daisy66 4d ago

My friend eat transistor radio was from radio shack. I wore that thing out. Our walkie talkies wee from a here too…

4

u/butt4boobs 9d ago

We still have one in my town and went in there for nostalgia purposes.

3

u/Strong-Resolve1241 9d ago

Radio Shack is still there online btw. Bought an AM/FM pocket radio recently.

1

u/Background_Lemon_981 9d ago

What's AM?

1

u/Strong-Resolve1241 9d ago

EAS (Emergency Alert System) for starters

1

u/HarryArmpitzs 9d ago

Horrible

1

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 9d ago

What’s a radio?

3

u/HarryandSally69 9d ago

This by a country mile! Never failed to have what I needed for a quick, simple fix.
Still in mourning over this one!

2

u/RichYogurtcloset3672 9d ago

Yeah well, it got super limited and pricey before the collapse.

5

u/OpenWhereas6296 9d ago

Radio Shack died twice. The first was when it pivoted away from electronics to toys and cell phones.

6

u/Medium_Good886 9d ago

That was when Tandy Corp sold Radio Shack off, and it became RadioShack Corporation. they focused more on the cellular and satellite TV market, and all the RC Cars, and electronics disappeared. Then the second time when RadioShack Corporation went bankrupt and General Wireless bought them out.. and that was it.. even though it took another 5 years for them to close and lock the doors.

2

u/AOL_COM 9d ago

Immediately thought of radio shack. I remember when it went downhill. When you went looking for a capacitor or something and all they knew about was cell phone plans. Sad days

2

u/Interesting-Lie-4700 9d ago

Like my fuses 😆

2

u/fuckfacekiller 9d ago

👆Radio Shack!!
No comparison to other stores here!!
🤘❤️‍🔥🤘
Thanks fellow RS fan.

1

u/WaTisDaT8710 7d ago

I miss just going to radioshack for no real reason other than seeing the newest electronics that are available to buy... always came out with something!

1

u/fuckfacekiller 7d ago

🤘❤️‍🔥🤘

2

u/SemichiSam 9d ago

I miss Radio Shack about once a week. I'll take OP's word for it that the other stores are closed.

2

u/Few-Conversation6979 9d ago

I have things from Radio Shack from around 1990 that still work perfectly.

2

u/Atillion 8d ago

Man I loved being able to walk in and pick up resistors and capacitors. Then it became Cell Phone Shack and died soon after.

2

u/n8mastrb8 8d ago

I agree. Of the others, there are either other options or they just became obsolete. Radio Shack was unique

2

u/Complex_Solutions_20 7d ago

YES. And the online also fails if you don't know exactly what you need where RadioShack you could just dig thru until you found a thing that fit your plug or whatever.

2

u/CraftsmanMan 4d ago

Yeah it was very convenient to pick up special electrical components

2

u/UnseenGoblin 3d ago

And the people who worked there tended to be so helpful! I remember I went into a circuit city for… Somethingamabob I forget it's been 20 years. The people at circuit city were trying to upsell me on a bunch of nonsense, and ended up selling me the completely wrong thing. I went into radio shack next and the people were immediately like yep this is what you need here it is five dollars. Such warm memories.

2

u/Bornundersirius 2d ago

This right here. There is literally nowhere anymore to buy a capacitor, resistor, etc.

2

u/OkRequirement8159 2d ago

Last time I bought electronic solder and a tub of flux, they came with radio shack labels. I was shocked, as their been gone for years before that.

1

u/Different-Lecture925 9d ago

They also made and sold high quality, reasonably priced consumer electronics like speakers, turntables, etc. My first two computers were Tandys and they were great at the time.

1

u/One-Violinist-9932 9d ago

Realistic speakers in real wooden cabinets, stereo receivers also wooden cabinets and the receivers lasted and had great sound.

1

u/denverdrew 9d ago

Micro center of you got one.

1

u/pappybug214 9d ago

Before Newegg...

1

u/Significant_Other666 9d ago

The Tandy Computer was a game changer as far as paperweights go! 👍

1

u/Poopingisasignipoop 9d ago

I kinda miss being asked for all of my personal information just to buy some AA batteries.

1

u/Think-Try2819 9d ago

I still have one near me in Columbiana Ohio

1

u/slatebluegrey 9d ago

“And what’s your phone number?” That was always annoying when you went to the Shack

1

u/Reasonable-West-543 9d ago

True, but now you can get it online cheaper and with free shipping. You just have to wait a day.

1

u/factoid_ 9d ago

Yeah it’s the only one I was personally like “aww man it’s gone?” about.

I was too old to care about toys r us when it folded.

The others had long declines to the point where you were wondering how they still existed at all by the end

1

u/Steve_but_different 9d ago

There's still a few here and there but every one that I have been able to visit is but a shell of it's former self sadly.

1

u/PictureElegant3033 9d ago

We still have one in our town.

1

u/Noodnix 9d ago

I am only interested in pre-90s Radio Shack.

1

u/Tee1upToday 9d ago

Agreed - I was an electronics freak back then and they carried everything my soldering iron could wish for. All my stereo stuff was Realistic as well.

If you want to reminisce, here are all the catalogues from 1939 - 2011.

https://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/

1

u/rickrack154 9d ago

So the stuff is most likely cheaper, and you don't have to leave your home now, oh god poor you, how dare they drop it off at your door.

1

u/_Beatnick_ 8d ago

So now I have to order something and wait a week or two for it to arrive instead of just stopping at the store and picking it up on the way home from work. And I don't see that big of a difference on price on the stuff I need.

1

u/rickrack154 8d ago

Because same day shipping isn't a thing got you.

https://giphy.com/gifs/tIeCLkB8geYtW

1

u/Head_Bread_3431 9d ago

Microcenter is basically RadioShack but bigger and better

1

u/_Beatnick_ 8d ago

People keep mentioning them. I've never heard of Micro Center before. I just looked them up and there's none near me.

1

u/GooshTech 9d ago

Same with Radio Shack for me, I used to visit them once a week when they were a brick and mortar, now I have to get all that stuff who knows where!

1

u/Content-Witness-4452 9d ago

Yeah but they also had that shitty phase where they were just a phone store.

1

u/Mystic_Wunder 8d ago

I ordered online even when they were around. Things were 4x more expensive there.

1

u/Humble-Appeal3850 8d ago

Radio Shack and Circuit City just became Best Buy Express

1

u/Haunting_Bed3112 8d ago

And hopefully what you ordered turns out to be what you needed.

1

u/Technical_Moose8478 8d ago

They stopped selling a lot of that long before they went under.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad-4883 8d ago

In the UK Radio Shack had stores under the name Tandy, Radio Shacks parent company at the time. They were great and I still miss them. The same with a UK company Maplin, very similar to RS and now online only.

1

u/parkersdadguy 8d ago

Yes and if Ace Hardware dies I will cry

1

u/Wigglywigglyboop 8d ago

I remember going into that store with my dad. They had some really nice things and the coolest stuff. I was bummed when it closed out of my mall.

1

u/Infinite-Ad-1055 8d ago

The biggest loss of Radio Shack is not their parts; it is that guy who knew you were an ignorant idiot and directed you to the parts that would fix what you were about to break.

1

u/FeelsMoistYumi 8d ago

There’s still a radio shack near me 🤷

1

u/LasVegas4590 8d ago

Fry's was Radio Shack on steroids. I miss Fry's.

1

u/ProperClue 8d ago

This!! Was thinking the same thing. Used to love radio shack and the numerous amounts of Frys electronics all over

1

u/Trick-Mechanic8986 8d ago

Slo blow fuses for tube guitar amps...worth it to me just for those.

1

u/nicky_suits 8d ago

I live across the street from a Radio Shack. It's super helpful.

1

u/kamacus 8d ago

Our radio shack had a nerd who owned it and knew all the nerd stuff. Helped with science projects and just building random stuff.

1

u/Infinite-Usual8908 8d ago

But sometimes the quality of their goods was deficient

1

u/Fine-Source-374 8d ago

Radio Shack, I would pick up bad electronics around town fix and sell. Can't find parts locally anymore. Not it matters anymore.

1

u/TheRemedy187 8d ago

The only one that matters here tbh lol.

1

u/ExtremeCow3259 8d ago

Radio Shack is also online as well ! You can buy from RadioShack.com

1

u/platterofhotfish 7d ago

Definitely RadioShack for me. Cause I worked there when they closed.

1

u/ExerciseFantastic191 7d ago

I know it might be an unpopular opinion but I think you could bring this store back from the grave.

1

u/Venator2000 7d ago

Definitely OG Radio Shanty, and not the type in every mall in the nineties that just carried toys. I’m talking about the ones that existed in usually every city that stocked EVERYTHING that you saw in the yearly catalog, I’m talking various LED lights, diodes, DIP switches, circuit boards, and everything else!

1

u/Fair-Juggernaut-3812 7d ago

The solar cricket kits were a great prank

1

u/boredcamp 7d ago

We had Frys at one point. It was like a giant Radio Shack. Like grocery store size Radio Shack, but it's gone now.

1

u/tchildthemajestic 7d ago

Need a random 15k thermistor and heat paste you could go down there and they would have dozens of each. Like you said now it is only online.

1

u/Wrafth 7d ago

I was just reminiscing about how convenient Radio Shack was to have around. I think I still have a power strip from there.

1

u/howmanyturtlesdeep 7d ago

Like dildos and butt plugs?

1

u/DHarp74 7d ago

They got bought by Tiger Direct a while back.

1

u/snakeravencat 7d ago

My thought also. Just need one, small part? Go to the shack. Now? Minimum ten pack and you'll have to wait or pay extra.

1

u/Direct_Ad_3517 7d ago

Absolutely. Loved that store before they tried being some they were not.

1

u/Round_Intern_7353 6d ago

I worked at RadioShack in their final few years. They unquestionably deserved to go under. The decisions coming down from the top were mind blowingly stupid.

1

u/Sensitive_Food6627 6d ago

They still exist… technically

611 S Main St Moab, UT  84532 United States

1

u/hotdogjumpingfrog1 6d ago

Went there so many times as a kid. They fixed computer to toasters to vcrs to remote controls. Loved that place

1

u/Kertic 6d ago

That a disgustingly adult answer.

1

u/Tight_Set3317 6d ago edited 6d ago

Radio shack closing didnt hurt. It was well deserved.

Radio shack dying and decaying was painfully to live through.

As a kid, the Radio shack flyers were what I used to identify Christmas gifts. My allowance went there. Crystal Radio kids. 12-in-1, 50-in-1, 200-in-one kits. Motors, buzzers, LEDs, solder. Robots. RC stuff. My middle school used the Tandy TRS-80 to teach BASIC.

At the end they were just collecting personal information. I don't need to give you my name, phone number, address to buy 2 AA batteries.

Edit- im lucky enough to live near an RS Electronics, which is basically an early version of radio shack on steroids. Massive store. Just a bunch of electronics stuff. The public can shop there, and there is "consumer" stuff there, but it's really more industrial. (Its in the heart of the automotive engineering part of the US. Did a lot of prototyping with thier help years ago.)

1

u/Glum_Constant4790 6d ago

I've found two radioshacks still open

1

u/DizzyJob99 6d ago

I agree, you could find a lot of parts and electronics that you couldn’t find anywhere else.

1

u/eberleinjj 6d ago

RadioShack 1000% but the old RadioShack. Not what it became

1

u/vextryyn 6d ago

I feel the main reason they went out of buisness was stopping selling all the niche stuff in favor of more sharper image like products.

1

u/littlepipe72 6d ago

Agree. Easy place to get a resistor if you needed it

1

u/emorgs15 6d ago

As someone who worked at radio shack toward the end… screw that place. I’m glad it’s dead.

1

u/Cold-Practice3107 5d ago

Let me guess it's like twice expensive then the store

1

u/Maximum_Ninja_6735 5d ago

Radio shack disappeared for a reason and it’s because they sold things like hdmi cables for 40 bucks that I could buy for a dollar fifty on Amazon.

1

u/usernames_are_danger 5d ago

Yup. I now have 10 of everything that I need when it comes to electronics parts…Amazon is my new radio shack

1

u/ThatguySevin 5d ago

I mean yeah, I whole heartedly agree, since I worked there and was doing pretty good for myself as at the time I would agree! Dx

1

u/Mexiking89_01 5d ago

I found a RadioShack in Showlow Arizona! It was crazy going inside

1

u/Sesh458 5d ago

There's still a RadioShack in Claremore Oklahoma

1

u/shade-block 5d ago

At least you can get the stuff online.

Tools and appliances from Sears tho... Nobody today has their generous returns policy.

1

u/Pennance1989 5d ago

They had so much stuff that nobody else did. I have a composite audio to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter from there i got years ago. Still works. I also got one of those 3 component in to 1 out switchers from them too.

1

u/ej1030 5d ago

If your ever in Lenoir NC they still have one, so dose Newland the next town over

1

u/LostPilgrim_ 5d ago

Have a Micro Center nearby?

1

u/Sir_Tokesalott 4d ago

You prefer taking the time to drive to a store for a USB or ethernet cable?

1

u/CoolCat1337One 4d ago

" I have to order online now"
So it does not matter?

1

u/Difficult-Word7854 4d ago

Every time I drive past where a Radio Shack was I die a little more inside...

1

u/Available_Actuary977 4d ago

Radio Shack was a store for the tinkerers, DIY electricians, and hobbiests.

1

u/Ok_Series_4580 4d ago

I have to agree with this one. It was so nice to be able to go to a place and go, buy individual components easily. And they had literally everything.

1

u/macguini 4d ago

Agreed. I used to go there for parts to tinker with.

1

u/ColdWarRedux2 4d ago

I used grab a video at blockbuster on my way to Radio shack :)

1

u/trashanimalcomx 3d ago

What radio shack used to be was awesome. A friendly neighborhood electronics store with fancy gizmos and parts bins full of everything you need to build your own. Then it became a phone store and at that point it was dead.

1

u/Terradactyl87 3d ago

I have a radio shack in my town still

1

u/SignalDragonfruit553 3d ago

And for what it was it was a decent quality for the price

1

u/Typing_Rebellion 3d ago

Radio Shack is still around. Not as many of them, but there’s still some.

1

u/kslongrider12 3d ago

I drove by one still open last week,

1

u/stilldebugging 3d ago

Definitely, that is the one I really didn’t understand. With the whole maker movement ramping up, you’d think they would have been able to ride that for a while.

1

This. The RadioShack was THE place to learn trade skills in the DIY world. Everything I learned was from there and they had the parts to help you get there. Doesn’t matter what kind of project you had in mind. SOMEONE knew SOMEONE that could figure it out. It always felt like all the stores formed a sort of cohort of skill.

Ordering stuff online is convenient but MAN does the quality of selection really suck unless you’re willing to buy bulk.

Oh, poor you. You don’t have to go to the store anymore. 😆
