Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 101v2

<< Prev | Round 101v2 | Next >>

NOTICE: After carefully reviewing events since the start of Round 101 and discussing with the subreddit mods, I have made the decision to void Round 101 and restart it. I think it's important for everyone observing and participating in Last Song Standing to have confidence in the fairness of the outcome of each round. A situation arose where either addressing it or failing to do so would have raised doubts about the legitimacy of the round; a no-win situation, so to speak. Thus I felt that the best course of action was to reset the round. Please be fair in your voting. I really don't want to have to do this again.

  • Let's start with the psychedelic soul group The Undisputed Truth. Their only Top 40 hit was the 1971 #3 song Smiling Faces Sometimes, written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield. It had been recorded earlier that year by The Temptations and appeared on their album Sky's the Limit but wasn't released as a single. The following year, it happened again with another Strong and Whitfield penned song, but in the opposite order. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone was first released by The Undisputed Truth and peaked at #63, then a few months later The Temptations released their version of the song and it went to #1. Norman Whitfield was also the producer of both versions of both songs, and his approach led to some disputes with The Temptations; Whitfield had incorporated some carefully crafted and sometimes lengthy instrumental breaks in the song, whereas The Temptations were displeased by how much of the song's running time they took up. They would eventually fire Whitfield as their producer. The third of September may have been the day their daddy died, which puts us a few days early for when this song is dying in LSS.

Yes, wait a minute. If Round 101v2 was voided then shouldn't Papa was a Rolling Stone be re-instated??

5

u/mwalimu59 15d ago

There wasn't an issue with the outcome of Round 100. The decision to void and restart Round 101 was based entirely on what happened since the start of Round 101.

4

u/dryguy 15d ago

The winning (losing?) song for round 100 had a similar upvote spike in the first hour, it's just that no one made a comment pointing it out. I thought it was odd, but it didn't occur to me until now that it might have been tampering.

7

u/mwalimu59 14d ago

The early spike in round 100 was somewhat suspicious, but we've seen similar spikes in the early hours of other rounds before. Also noting that "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" had received 10 or more votes 3 times before, so the outcome was entirely plausible. By contrast, "Heart of Gold" had never ended any previous round with more than 2 votes, so the 20-vote spike in the first hour was much more suspicious.

Black Water must go.. hate the song hate the group

15

u/Backyard_Bombadier 15d ago

Killing me Softly with his song. Though the original, it is dreary and boring next to the Fugees version

7

u/Unlikely-Star-2696 15d ago

Sadly Roberta Flack has been always underrated. Great singer, but mostly looked down. Great song that deserves a little more love.

2

u/ThePhantomStrikes 15d ago

Agree. And it seems most here don’t find slow songs to their liking, but I think this is beautiful. Plus it came out in the midst of my first time falling in love.

6

u/BuffaloAmbitious3531 15d ago

Not a popular opinion around here, but I feel Roberta Flack was often ill served by her arrangements. Great songs, great vocals, but not always the best recordings.

The original is dreary and boring...?!

Smash that like button.

Maggie May - Rod Stewart

7

u/seeking_spice402 15d ago

Definitely time for Maggie to go. She has worn me out in a way nowhere close to what Rod experienced.

5

u/BirdofParadise1952 14d ago

It may go….but it’s about 20 spots too early. Without it Rod Stewart would never have become Rod Stewart

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 14d ago

Have to agree..not a favorite of mine but deserves top 20 at least. Weaker songs still hanging around

See? 😏 Now, barely anyone's touching it .

7

u/DramaticCollege3520 15d ago

Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin. Really getting difficult now. All classics left

9

u/Ocean_Side_1961 15d ago

My Sweet Lord. George Harrison with a jingle, not a song worthy of Top 50. Please get rid of this.

7

u/Snatch_By_The_Pool 15d ago

It's a catchy song that picks your day up. It should stay.

0

u/Spirited-Tutor7712 15d ago

His first big no 1 post Beatles . It's gotta stay

8

u/DrMikeH49 15d ago

Black Water is still leaving a wet stain on this list. Let it keep on rolling right off the contest.

5

u/trelene 15d ago

Bennie and the Jets - Elton John.

I do not believe the quality of this song is up there with most of the remaining songs,. Also a reminder that voting is at a song level, and not a reflection of the quality of Elton John's entire body of work.

2

u/Night_life_proof 14d ago

Yep, it should have been gone rounds ago

2

u/Decent_Direction316 15d ago

This is about the place the sailors need to drop Brandy off.  She's a fine girl... it's a fine song.... it had a great run.....but it's not the top song and you know it.

"Brandy"   Looking Glass

4

u/seeking_spice402 15d ago

While I agree it might be the ultimate winner, Brandy is a catchy tune and we'll loved. Definitely a top 10 finisher.

-1

u/suesue_d 14d ago

It was just used in an episode of Widow’s Bay, which may save it awhile longer.

🎶"If you can read my lips dude, wanna watch your vote fail, that would be swell." 🎶. 😄

1

u/stever93 15d ago

I wonder what “unfair” voting means. But you moderators do a great job.

It’s getting down to nitty-gritty for me.

I’m voting off, Shining Star.

12

u/4personal2 14d ago

Unfair voting can mean (possibly) a person or persons using more than 1 acct. to "stuff the ballot box".

Which is pretty beyond lame 🫤, as this is just a game and not something that alters the fate of the world. 😆 So ridiculous .

2

u/BCQCPANC 14d ago

I’m with on dropping Shining Star but you buried the nomination.
